Mary Worth 380

Awesome. Far more quickly than I expected, Frank has come to realize the depth of his error inviting Mary Worth to visit! But it may be too late. You'll have to do better than hints, Frank. Mary knows exactly what you mean by the 'vacation resort' remark, but she won't acknowledge it. You'll need to be more direct: "Mary Worth, here is the restraining order."

Whoa. Talk about irony.

"No one meddles into the affairs of their own family members, Frank. That's my territory."

Why indeed! Is it:

A. When Lynn's ex-boyfriend broke up with her, she placed a voodoo curse on his photo and swore she'd keep it trapped in her jacket pocket forever. Now the curse is broken.

B. Mary Worth's inappropriate involvement in the life of an unrelated minor has finally caused Lynn to snap, longing for the good old days when she only had to put up with her father's inappropriate involvement in her life.

or C. She knows the 2008 Worthy Awards are coming up and she's really going to have to chew some scenery if she's going to beat Donna Amalfi's performance as a human vegetable for "Outstanding Performance by a Guest Artist (Female)."

So let's hear it Dear Reader. I'm sure you have a logical explanation for this reaction.

Yes! Yes! Yes! On this clear, crisp Thanksgiving morning, I am thankful that Lynn is just as fine an actress as Toby for it has made this brilliant story truly compelling. With lightning fast reflexes developed through years of paternal abuse on the rink, Lynn snatches the mysterious photo of her steroid supplier, BALCO chief Victor Conte and skates to the center of the rink where she can weep soulfully out of the reach of Mary Worth's obsessed meddling.

I was sorry I couldn't post on yesterday's strip because this really is one of the funniest panels I've seen in a while as Mary Worth's compulsion to help others drives her after Lynn: "No, really, Lynn: Your future is ahead of you. It's not in your past. That's why it's called your future! You are a talented, gifted, beautiful, intelligent, compassionate, trustworthy, loyal, helpful, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, reverent... Whoops, this ice is slippery... wait a minute! LYNN, over here, this side of the rink! You're wonderful! Now that I've flattered you, now will you please tell me why you hate yourself!??"

One can dream, can't one? Instead, we get this:

But the good news is that Mary is apparently now skating on the ice!

Mary Worth is about to lose it! Go Lynn, go! When the smoke starts to rise from Mary's ears, we'll know she's short circuited for good. Also, what the heck kind of car is that? And where the heck is it parked? Mary and Lynn are clearly standing on the front porch, so whose house is that in the first panel? So many distracting questions, I'm losing focus on the skate.

I'm stunned.

Simply stunned.

What kind of steroid is Lynn taking to give her the strength to fight against Mary's meddling?!

That's it! That's her regret! She's juiced. Of course she's on steroids. There's no other explanation for her ability to withstand Mary Worth!

I'm going with Frank on this one. Typical Mary Worth to place her priorities above the priorities of her host. "We were having a discussion, Frank." So what? It's time to go. Talk in the car. Of course, I do sympathize with Mary a little because she's DYING to know what despicable deed in Lynn's past has left her weighted down with guilt and shame. Me too.

And Mary Worth has made it her mission to help them remember!

I was hoping that Mary was about to launch into another flashback about something she regrets, but clearly Frank has come knocking on Lynn's door. Only Frank would knock so heavy-handedly.

I think it's time for another Not-A-Real-Contest! Whoever correctly guesses what Lynn regrets, will get to choose a song for the Charterstone Jukebox (all songs subject to Condo Board approval). I just worry that with Frank's interruption, we may never hear Lynn's confession. Should that prove to be the case, we'll award the prize to whoever comes up with the most likely regret, as determined by the Condo Board. Post your regrets in the comment section today!

Good point, Mata Hari.

I'm quite impressed with Lynn's ability to resist Mary Worth's power. Sadly, in panel two, Mary Worth transfigures her face to appear as Lynn's mother, thus eliminating any hope Lynn has of avoiding Mary's destructive influence.

Oh my. Lynn has gone all Chester the Dog on a certain designer scarf. Good thing Mary read that book on dog psychology last year. Woof. I'm just glad we got to hear Lynn tell us that she shredded the scarf, rather than actually watch her do it. That would have been too much action.

And don't think I haven't noticed that Lynn's room has remained stable two days in a row. Well done, Mr. Giella!

Lynn has been listening to the music, but what music was she listening to?! Last week I added the theme from Ice Castles to the Charterstone Jukebox in honor of Lynn, but when we find out what she "free skates" to, I'll add that song for sure! Anyone want to make a guess? Judging by the pile of damp tissues on the floor, perhaps it is from "Ice Castles" after all.

I also want to commend Joe Giella. He's worked very hard to make sure the furniture and floor plan remain as stationary as possible in the Worthiverse today, although we all know perfection is impossible. Perhaps it has to do with Mary being in placid Lake Tranquil rather than Santa Royale, California. Although, if you look at the full strip, you'll see that Frank's house no longer has a porch.

Grabbing Mary by the arm, Frank yanks her outside... and out of earshot of Lynn's rival. Now he's safe to discuss his secret strategy with his old friend: Fill Lynn's young soul with enough resentment and rage that her form tightens up and she wins her next ice skating game out of pure spite.

Now, to all of you who have wished me a quick recovery, I've picked a new jukebox song out for you.

Thanks everyone for your good wishes. My old friend Frank Griffin came to see me and I've always respected him. But he was mad! He was yelling, "Wanders! Keep it tight! Point your toes and get your lazy butt off of that recliner!" It was really motivating. So here I am.

I've been sleeping on our family room recliner for over a week. It has been the only way that I can sleep without excruciating pain. Today, however, I felt a lot better. Still very limited mobility, and I still hurt, but at least I can sit down at the computer for a little while and catch up on Mary Worth and read all your encouraging comments. Thanks everyone for sharing this embarrassing Mary Worth obsession with me.

But just a note - I've started a new job that is highly demanding. So I anticipate going back to the "Not Every Day" schedule that I used to have here at Mary Worth and Me. And many of my posts will probably be later in the day. I hope you don't mind.

And let me just say, starting a new job with a herniated disk and constant pain is a little bit of a challenge. But I really believe the worst is over.

Thanks for listening to me whine!

Wanders has been flat on his back for three days with a herniated disk in his upper back. It's really interfering with my ice skating. So continue to enjoy Mary Worth and I'll start blogging again when I get my sense of humor back.

Mary has totally misread this situation! She thinks Frank is just a jerk, but it turns out Lynn is every bit as competitive as her father. She just misses her deceased mother. "Dad, I miss Mom." "Don't! It gives us chance to work on pointing your toes." "But I loved her so much." "Don't worry about that! Watch your form so you can win your next ice skating game!"

Or, Mary, perhaps Lynn just doesn't enjoy meeting you! I think that's a much more logical explanation. After all, Frank has been coaching her to win the ice skating game her entire life. She's a champion driven to succeed. She doesn't have time to let some stranger meddle in her life. She may be my favorite Mary Worth character ever - the first one with any common sense.
