Touché! Very nice move, Liza. Drew is completely thwarted. No one ever turns down an invite from Dr. Bailey. Other doctors wait years for dinner with the Baileys, and here Drew is home for three weeks and he already has an invite. Maybe Dr. Bailey wants to see Drew's pictures from Vietnam, and we'll get to watch a slide show!
Today's Full Strip
Next thing you know, LiZa will be scheduling their wedding date. Without the unnecessary assistance of Dr. Drew... Talk about efficient!
ReplyDeleteHmmm, I wonder what "!" sounds like...
ReplyDeleteDr Bailey also has a pool by the house, so they can take a swim before dinner.
ReplyDeleteMy sources tell me that today was going to be an unusual 3-panel event in Mary Worth Land. In the now missing third panel, Drew, driven to the point of raging insanity, wraps his enormous stethoscope around Liza's neck and throttles the life out of her. The rest of the week was supposed to deal with how Drew gets rid of the body in a busy hospital. Unfortunately, because of strict censoring to maintain the blandness of the story, the third panel and with it the rest of the storyline was scratched. Salmon squares, anyone?
ReplyDeleteGood one, Shmoopie. The "blandness" of this strip is monumental. I mean, in "Judge Parker", we have a woman who's teetering on the edge of a roof, threatening to jump and in "Rex Morgan", we have the prospect of a new hire in the office wanting to quit after she's hired.
ReplyDeleteIsn't that Aldo Kelrast in Panel 1?
ReplyDeleteMethinks that a huge scene is going to erupt at Dr. Bailey's party.
ReplyDelete*sits down with an orange-colored drink and salmon squares* This is going to be good.
If Drew goes to this dinner, then he deserves to be stuck forever with LiZa, 'cause she's a lot smarter than he is. He'd probably need her smarts just to navigate through the day.
ReplyDeleteHow hard is it to tell her he's not going? He can even call the good Dr. Bailey and explain that LiZa is delusional and they are not a couple.
...Unless Dr. Bailey is that guy who was so excited he almost jumped into the birthday cake. In that case, he's probably delusional too, Drew is surrounded, and fleeing to Vietnam is the only solution.
I just can't wait for Liza to introduce Drew their firstborn. I'm sure that will warrant two !.
ReplyDeleteDr. Bailey? As in Dr. Miranda Bailey on Grey's Anatomy? Maybe Drew should go to dinner after all and see if he can get a job at Seattle Grace Mercy West. Of course, if he did, LiZa would move to Seattle with him. Sorry, Drew, the only recourse is murder by stethoscope.
ReplyDeleteLiza has already scheduled the bridal shower, the wedding, and the baby shower, and has started to wear pregnancy padding under her scrubs.
ReplyDeleteGood catch, Trixietrudy; nowhere does it say that Dr. Bailey is a man! She's probably a hottie who also makes a mean chicken potpie and speaks fluent Vietnamese.
ReplyDeleteRoutinely hilarious comments & original posts on this blog. You guys rock.
ReplyDeleteThis storyline has shadows (or is it echoes?) of a Murder She Wrote episode in which Jessica Fletcher, in Texas to testify for a sheister lawyer in a 10-gallon hat, gets knocked to the ground by a couple of rambunctious kids at the airport and is immediately whisked away to a ritzy hospital that caters to the hypochondriac rich with good insurance. Having suffered a slight fracture in her leg, she is casted by one young doctor. A scene or two later, another young doctor asks about the tightness of the cast and is immediately dismissive of the quality of work that his colleague has done. It turns out the two are rivals jockeying for favor in teh eyes of the old, experienced windbag who runs the place and is expecting to retire soon and name his successor, one of the two bright, rising star doctors. The murder in that episode happens after a dinner at the old doctor's house that just about everyone is invited to. There's much made beforehand about how special such an invitation is and what it may or may not mean that this guy or that is invited to attend.
ReplyDeleteSo there's a little bit of that going on here. And, yeah, that episode was just as boring as this storyline, so they've got that in common, too.

bilight (so appropriate during Pride Month, I suppose)
Today's strip turns the tide in LiZa's favor, as far as Mary is concerned. "Dr. Bailey? Why, I've tried to get him to have dinner with me and Jeff for ages now at Restaurant, and this girl gets him to agree to dinner so quickly? She's surely someone on the way up at Mountview Hospital. What's wrong with you, Drew? She sounds like someone I should be inviting to the next Charterstone pool party!"
ReplyDeleteI don't know why Drew should even consider attending the party with Liza but he probably will because he is stupid.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Drew should take Liza horseback riding with Dawn and Vera.
What a hoot! Dr. Bailey sells Amway. Liza = sucker
ReplyDeleteBut Drew, you HAVE to go to Dr. Bailey's invite! After all, he came to your surprise birthday party."
ReplyDelete(I think his real name is Dr. Baily Grump. Remember the stern guy with the 'stache?)
Vicki, I'm voting for Dr. Bailey to be C. Everett Koop from this June 2nd strip: http://tinyurl.com/6ef5mma
ReplyDeleteBtw, it's a little-known fact that once you reach the exalted position of Surgeon General, you shake hands up around your armpit.
And Elaine, I think Drew's "!" wasn't meant for LiZa at all - he was exclaiming, "Say, where did all the ceiling tiles just vanish to?"
I just had a thought! (Yes, I sit around all day contemplating plots for Mary Worth...it helps me smile)
ReplyDeleteIf this is a dinner hosted by a doctor at the hospital, then it's possible that there may be a certain special hospital administrator present.
Jill, get your purple boots a-movin' because you have some drinking, finger-pointing and heckling to do. At LiZa!
Thursday: We interrupt this story, in which nothing is happening, to bring you two panels in which even less happens.
ReplyDeleteThat's not the fundraiser ont he phone Dr. Jeff; it's your son: "Dad--I'm not going to be able to see you for awhile. There was an "accident' atthe hospital and the police may be coming to ask some questions..."
ReplyDeleteAs usual Dave, James, Shmoopie, and others, your scenarios for what might happen next are infinitely more inventive and creative than the dull resolution that's in the not-so-immediate future.
ReplyDeleteMary knows full well how "successful" avoiding Aldo Kelrast turned out! Maybe that's why she looks so darn upset in today's panel two! (Either that or she needs to eat more fiber...)
ReplyDeleteNow I DO hope Dr. Baily, aka as "Dr. Koop" remembers to issue an invite to retired Dr. Jeff Corey, M.D.
That way, Mary will be sure to tag along for free refreshments and Amway samples. I absolutely think it's time she meets LiZa in person.
(And yes, if we're LUCKY, a liquored-up Jill Black will be attendance...)
Well, it could be worse. The dinner date could be for Drew to meet Liza's parents. How proud they must be that she has landed a doctor.
ReplyDeleteThis comic strip promises kindly old women and delivers broken glass to the eyes. Minus the actual excitement of broken glass to the eyes.
ReplyDeleteI smell an *intervention* coming along. INTERVENTION! INTERVENTION!
ReplyDeleteAnd if Liza drove off a cliff while consuming whisky straight from the bottle, would that be such a bad thing? I think not...
OK, that portrayal of LiZa's face is just begging for some face touching , if you know what I mean, and I know you do.
ReplyDeleteFriday: Where did Drew come from? Did he just walk through that wall right into Jeff's apartment? Can Mary conjure up people merely by wondering about them?
ReplyDelete@Mary: YES! Yes she can!! Isn't that "Mystic" Magazine she's reading?
ReplyDeletePS: Verif. word: "wingin." There's a joke there somewhere.
We jumped a week? Does that mean we missed Dr. Baileys dinner party/Amway event?
ReplyDeleteToday we see Mary at Dr Jeff's house, leafing through Drew's magazines. She IS the nosy one.
tee hee, Mary is caught RED-HANDED snooping in one of Drew's Men's Fitness mags!! Those "scholarly" books surrounding her just don't have any fun pictures...
ReplyDeleteFriday: I see Drew snuck home first to change into his blue suit (and presumably, his blue car). It SO sets off the blue highlights in his hair.
ReplyDelete@Chester: Jumped a week? In the Worthiverse? No way. I suspect we'll be seeing exciting scenes from Dr. Bailey's party for the next, um, four or five weeks.
I also suspect that the fund raiser on the phone for Jeff is Dr. Bailey, and that she has taken Jeff's idea and run with it herself. She is calling to confirm that she is the originator of the idea and that Jeff and Mary had better be BUSY that day.
I'm with Chester et al--Last week? Last Week?! How long did it take to drive around the drive approaching the hospital?!
ReplyDeleteIn keeping with the dull methodical nature of this strip, I see Dr. Drew talking to HR and having Liza written up for harrassment. Nothing says "avoid contact" like a restraining order.
Mary: Hello Drew, I am enjoying your magazine collection so. I just happened to be looking under your bed for a Tupperware dish...question, what is a posing strap?
