Oh my gawd, why does Moy continue with these emotionally stunted people?
I'm reminded of a photo taken on Valentine's Day when I was 16. I'm holding a little stuffed, red animal that my boyfriend gave me. I am smiling from ear to ear, so happy and in love.
It's a sweet picture, but I was 16 - and easily impressed by stuffed animals (or maybe woven bracelets). I was also very eager to grow up!
(I also suspect that my ex-boyfriend read Men's Fitness, if ya know what I mean.)
In the real world this is creepy. In the Worthiverse, it's perfectly normal. Yesterday's strip earns props to Moy, however - with the use of past tense she for actually managed to raise the slight possibility of deviating from the outcome that's been writ large in neon from the beginning. However it was probably just a typo.
Hats off to Giella for that truly mystifyingly awkward tangle of arms in the first panel. And no romantic reunion worth its salt would be complete without a face touch. But why oh why did James Lipton have to come along to spoil the moment?
I don't know about everyone else, but until now I had forgotten about the approaching and obligatory, "We have YOU to thank for our happiness, Mary!" scene, where Gina and her major player embrace the Meddler par excellence in a Worthiverse love fest.
So happy that nothing whatsoever occurred, transpired, happened or just came along with either of these too. Growing up just complicates things!
And I believe, I'm not sure, but we may just be seeing a first in the Worthiverse... a sight gag/joke line! McSnooty's "Table for one" morphs into "Table for two?" Oooh, I'm touching my face as I ponder this.
"Table for two?" "No, table for three!" shouts Mary Worth, as she leaps out of the planter. "If I hadn't dodged a bullet, this reunion would never have happened. You two owe it all to me!" Let's just hope that this two emotionally stunted twits never reproduce. BTW, either Bobby shrunk or Gina grew overnight, because today they're the same height, with Gina's ponytail giving her the advantage.
This is that magical part of the evening where Bobby still assumes Gina to have accomplished something, an education, career goals, some travel, a few humorously disastrous relationships... He still anticipates a lively conversation, a passionate rediscovery. The spark of old puppy love stoked into a flame...
I'd give a nickel to see the look on his face when every single one of Gina's stories starts with, "I remember the day when we...".
Slowly, steadily, Bobby's jaw will start to drop. I like to imagine it like the best of Giella's melting faces.
heydave@8.18a has the operative point here. Evidently nothing has happened to either one in 10 years to change their minds about each other.
I wonder at what point - say, 30 years down the line - that either one would have given up waiting for the other one to mysteriously reappear in their lives and had actually gone out to find someone else? But this is the Worthiverse, where Mary speaks with pride about not speaking to her old boyfriend for weeks on time...which beggered the question - "did he even notice"?
Isn't "table for two?" the first words out of Gina's mouth when Mary walked into Diner. I'm thinking -- if this is true -- that the storyline is now over!!! Shall I hold the fanfare and wait? Oh heck with it, I'm going to drink or eat some Kelk and salmon squares and celebrate!
Also, looking back at earlier strips, I've noticed how Gina's ponytail turned from being lush and luxurious to being laser-precision.
I actually thought this story would have taken a turn and Gina and Drew might have ended up together, but today's strip seems to be wrapping things up, with a big thanks to Mary Worth!
I'd say by Sunday we'll have Mary discussing something with Jeff and on to the next problem.
Where's that bearded guy? He hasn't been brought out in awhile.
