Mary Worth 1,157

"Grandma, how did Granddaddy propose?"

"Well, children, it was very romantic. We were stuck in traffic in lower Manhattan. Your grandfather had the coolest car ever made -- the Duckworth LLX. He was a wealthy athlete in those days. We were stuck in traffic, breathing the fumes of the other cars because we couldn't get the rag top to close. It was October and about 40 degrees. I was freezing. He looked at me from his driver's seat and said, "Gina, will you marry me?" I said, "Yes, of course, but keep your eyes on the road." Then the feds started to interfere saying I couldn't marry a celebrity because of the threats against my life by the mob. But fortunately, three weeks later, your grandfather blew out his ACL in the Big Game, and within one year was a penniless, obscure, former athlete that no one had ever heard of. We were married in June."

  1. Rich athlete? Bobby plays indoor soccer -- not in the NBA/NFL. He likely has to work the graveyard shift at a Jersey rendering plant to make payments on the car he's living in.
Perhaps Gina's been scarce at the Diner in recent weeks because she's so exhausted from selling her own plasma to keep Bobby in cardigans.

  2. Apparently Gina made a vow to never change out of the monochromatic purple outfit that she was wearing when Bobby rediscovered her. I think the car top is down because Gina must be pretty ripe by now.

  3. I thought NASA retired the space shuttle program...

  4. Kudos for pointless yet exciting hand gestures!

That's all that really brings my eyes to this strip anymore, anyhow.

  5. Elderly woman walks into diner. Speaks with waitress and finds out she wants to reconnect with childhood boyfriend. Encourages her to do so. She does, resulting in marriage proposal. That's July 26 to October 28. Has there ever been a storyline in which less happened?

  6. Further to my point: well, there was also "Sandwich-loving man goes on Internet and discovers long-lost son. Turns out he's not." Nothing much happened there either. But at least there was fishing. And frolicking. And men wearing ladies' shoes.

  7. That blonde in Diner is flashing some pretty hot collarbone. I wonder how that got past the censors?

  8. I am enjoying the subtle halos above the heads of both Mary (of course) and Allison (not sure why).

Like all of you, I am looking forward to our next action panel from Joe Giella. Please, let the mob story pan out to another shootout or perhaps at least a high speed car chase.

Mr. Giella needs a challenge. His best work is ACTION illustration, not inking boring conversations between losers.

Joe - If you are out there reading Wanders' blog: We are with you in spirit. Bring on the action!.... PLEASE.

  9. i... they... REALLY? i can't believe this is REALLY how this story ends: in love at 14, then never see each other again for 10 years, know nothing of each other as adults... but immediately getting married upon their reunion?

i guess i shouldn't be stunned; this is Mary Worth, after all. and yet... I'm sorry, this is creepy even for Mary Worth!!!

  10. Those head restraints will be useless when Bobby crashes.

BUT...please see this link to a documentary film that could not be more timely! "Dish: Women, Waitressing and the Art of Service" http://www.wmm.com/filmcatalog/pages/c808.shtml

Hey Alison, check it out! (Not you, Gina, this would be way over your head.)

  11. I give it 10 months.

Meanwhile, as Mary's mind wanders while she holds her jaw (and as the other diners at DINER assume she just bit into a bone in the apple pie), Allison patiently waits for Mary to save her.

WV: myter, as in "it myter been a good storyline, but wasn't."

  13. I wonder if Gina will wear that ponytail on her wedding day.

  14. LisaCarter@9.41a - hopefully we won't find out what Gina looks like at her wedding because we'll not be there. I can only pray that Moy sends these two on a "destination wedding" the Four Seasons Bora Bora and we're - mercifully - left behind.

  15. Seriously, I keep coming back to see if the dialogue has morphed into something less dumb.

Next time, I'm going to turn off the sound and watch the symphony of hand gestures in silence, or that sound that goes on in my head when I'm in Santa Royale.

  16. That panel reminds me of when you see a little old lady driving a big old SUV, and all you can see is a tiny bit of the top of their head peeking above the dashboard. Is Bobby a little person? HOW can he see out the windshield? Maybe he's in the Featherweight Division of Indoor Soccer, and it pays better?

  17. Well, thank god for that. Gina will never have to work again.

    Oh, wait...

WV: "render". Seriously. Very apropos for Jason from Utah's hilarious post.

  18. Earth to Moy: Proposing while driving is more dangerous than texting.

  19. Now, maybe, finally we can have some action. Jill Black, please step up to the plate and PLAN THIS WEDDING! PLEASE!!

  20. Needing some comic relief, I looked back at the scene in Bobby's car. The pink interior trim is the same shade as the drapes in Diner, leading me to believe that Gina helped Bobby select that car.

  21. Eek! What if this is the lead up to a CAR CRASH? And Gina is given another cross to bear?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Mary hails from New York, right? Didn't the strip start out as "Apple Mary" decades ago? Could this be a "Mary Returns to the Big Apple" segue way?

'Cause if Gina and Bobby don't invite Mary to the Society Wedding of the Year, they are truly ungrateful!

  23. Whenever I think the regulars here, while always creative and observant, might be a bit harsh on Ms. Moy, she always snaps me out of defending her simple, trite storylines. This proposal from inside a rocket ship is just too much.

    wv: polde

Bobby and Gina are causing my head to ex-polde.

  24. Wait a sec- let's take a moment to savor the genius of the metaphor presented here. Yesterday Mary wished that Gina would be on "Easy Street" with Bobby, and today here she is cruising down Easy Street with her blue-haired beloved! Genius!!

  25. I love the bicycle streamer ponytail.

  26. I remember last Friday I commented on the fact that this sorry story seemed to go on forevah and several posters said, "well, Moy'll finish up the story on Sunday, and we'll have a new one on Monday!".

That did NOT happen and we're still here, one week later, wondering when we'll be relieved of these wretched characters and storyline.

I'm 60 years old and have been reading Mary Worth for 40 years and it seems to be one long storyline.
