Mary Worth 1,181

Goleta? That explains why Mary said, "ANOTHER" missing child in yesterday's strip. Here's a story about a child that went tragically missing from Goleta 50 years ago. Recent memory for Mary Worth.

And, yes, duh, I know Goleta didn't exist 50 years ago. Who doesn't know that?

Today's Full Strip

  1. I'm thinking that we're seeing yet another ham-fisted (hi, coach!) handling of "topical" issues on the part of Moy.

A smug-pussed Mary making a damn phone call to a bereaved woman on 9/11 wasn't enough; not we'll get pontificating about missing kids.

This'd better get better, or I'm going to be sorely gruntled.

Oh, and don't tease me with that switch-hand face touching Mary...

  2. As I sit here drinking my morning cup of Goleta, I can only wonder if this will be the event that brings back Adrian and Officer Wahts-his-name back from their honeymoon.

  3. So how does Mary know where Emily is from? The only information on the poster is her name, age and a brief description.

I wonder if Mary realizes she lost the scarf she was wearing yesterday...

  4. I wonder if Mary would have been as distressed if Emily Smith were average looking rather than "beautiful." And, yet another WASPy character. Santa Royale must be the least diverse city in California. Speaking of SR, I had no idea it was such a metropolis - note that skyline!

  5. Huh! The first of many clues - Mary trips up and gives away the fact that she knows young Emily is from Goleta - yet there is no mention of a home town on the poster! Perhaps the wallet snatching is part of a bigger picture of revenge, and Mary is the head of some evil child-snatching ring... A girl can dream, can't she??

  6. @Dave in Oarma 7.54: Hey, the lovebirds came back for Mary's drugged Thanksgiving, remember?

  7. Is the story line about missing children or is it about Mary spiraling down into a deep depression? Turns down marriage proposal, helps Gina but Gina splits without saying thank you or goodbye, Allison whines at Mary but Mary decides NOT to help her, Mary's wallet is stolen, ID theft ensues, the police don't help her, Toby lectures her about vigilance, Mary can only muster up enough energy to make hard tack for Thanksgiving dinner and serve some bright color/flavor of Kool-Aid, and now she's obsessing about missing children she doesn't know. And all this while drinking gallons of coffee.

  8. OMG! I have a good friend who lives in Goleta! I'll have to warn him about the crime wave in the area. First a girl gone missing in 1961 and now another one. I bet he didn't know he was living in such an a bad area.

What IS interesting is that Moy is using actual towns in her strip. I had figured that "Santa Royale" was really Santa Barbara, but this confirms it. And Goleta is actually considered "down market" to those living in SB and Montecito.

  10. Wanders, you could always make jokes about the punctuation (or lack thereof) on the poster. If this storyline moves as fast as MW usually does, we could be staring at it for days.

  11. Oh gack! So I went back to see the whole strip upon hearing news of a skyline view.

Aside form the laughable art deco attempt, I get treated to the very smuggly Mary-face that I had warned myself about in my earlier comment! Curses!

    vw: ovell...
As in, "Oh vell, that's what I get for coming here."

  12. Now we have a better idea of where Santa Royale is! It's close to the fictional town of Santa Teresa in the Kinsey Millhone series by Sue Grafton. Maybe we can get Kinsey to investigate this disappearance! What a great crossover that would be!

Verification word: woods -- is that a clue?

  13. @Anonymous--you're right. I must have blocked that out in my efforts to remove the last story from my memory to preserve space for something useful like following the quick moving Family Circus stories.

  14. We know every so often Mary flirts with the dark side, as seen in the unaturally tidy wrap up of her um..."Aldo Problem". As pointed out, just HOW did Mary know the child was from Goleta, hmmmm? Friends in low places...

  15. Wait a minute- that face looks so familiar, yet... Just how old is Toby? OMG... Toby is the missing child, now grown!

  16. I sure hope Mary finds her before Christmas....2013.

  17. I smell a "Christmas miracle."

  18. meg@1:52 PM, I thought it was a green pepper. At any rate, the way Mary's holding that knife makes me nervous. Also, see the coffee cup precariously occupying the shelf. Did Toby stash it there last week?

  19. KitKat- no, it's broccoli. Mary doesn't like those spicy things like green peppers!

  20. Meg, Dr. Jeff doesn't like spicy things either. That's why he sticks with Mary.

  21. Why doesn't she use a cutting board to slice that thing that looks disturbingly like a long finger? Is there really a knife other than a partially opened pocketknife that you could use at that angle? More mysteries to WONDER about.

Don't be shy! I'd love to hear what you have to say about Mary Worth. Just keep it clean, that's all I ask. This is a FAMILY FRIENDLY blog. I don't want to moderate comments, but I will if I have to.
