Having read either Ann Landers or Dear Abby for nigh on fifty (gulp) years, people who write to advice columnists don't dwell on deep, existential issues much. It's more like "My mother-in-law does such and such and it's driving me bonkers". Considering that "Ask Wendy" runs in the equivalent of a local shopper, life in Santa Royale must be grim, indeed. Brutal, even.
Hmm, I didn't realize that Wilbur's frolicking place was part of Charterstone. Mary's mood is too grim for any frolicking anyway.
@fauxprof at 7:22 AM is spot on. People write to newspaper advice columnists for things like catching a spouse texting an old flame, not to express angst. Today's strip makes me want to dash my head against those rocks in the background. What if we're embarking on a week of Mary and Toby tossing platitudes rather than Wilbur and Dawn embarking on the Love Boat?
Of the top twenty things that concern people, where does Moy think that being "disillusioned by the negativity in the world" would fall? How ever will Mary respond? What are the odds that Mary's reply will somehow make Dawn realize how her negativity is disillusioning poor Wilbur.
I have been feeling hopelessness, disappointment and disheartened by this 'Dawn is sulking' story. In fact, I have felt this so deeply, that I haven't been checking in with any regularity here.
I am afraid that if I see one more panel with Wilbur trying to cheer sulky Dawn up that I will be compelled to give Dawn a FACEPUNCH! But that will only break my monitor!
Sigh, maybe Mary can get a good letter as Wendy... I can only hope.
Miss you fine folks. I'll check in again to see if this endless story is over and on to the next. It's just too much for me.
When Wilbur and Dawn return Wilbur will need to catch Mary up on the trip to Italy, then Mary will need to catch up Toby, and then catch up Dr. Jeff. This is going to be a long (brutal) summer.
Hey, it could be worse. We could be commenting on "Marmaduke". Over 25,000 panels since 1954, and the joke is always "Gee, what a big dog!". Give me Mary Worth any day.
@ Thorpnotized, no I was lucky enough to see fireworks in my own neighborhood (we're walking distance from a swanky hotel). My friend who went said the bay fireworks were the most awesome she had ever seen - for 20 seconds.
I think Mary is going to talk Toby into taking over Ask Wendy. Then Mary can take an ad hoc vacation to Italy to cheer herself up. And Dr. Jeff, being sad from being repeatedly rebuffed by Mary can also take a long trip to Italy.
Italy is where people are supposed to go to cheer up, apparently.
Don't be shy! I'd love to hear what you have to say about Mary Worth. Just keep it clean, that's all I ask. This is a FAMILY FRIENDLY blog. I don't want to moderate comments, but I will if I have to.

ReplyDeleteWhat did Mary expect to read in letters sent to an advice column? Uplifting, happy stories? Didn't she ever read Dear Abby?
ReplyDeleteMary needs to wake up and smell the Kelkie-flavored coffee!
To-by! To-by! To-by! We haven't seen her since April 22nd -- time to catch up!
ReplyDeleteI love that Mary is now saying, "Sigh." Having her say, "!" was interesting enough, but "Sigh" is even more fun.
ReplyDeleteWow, how bad is it that I'm happy to see Mary after weeks of Wilbur trying to impress his sulky daughter in Italy?
ReplyDeleteToby, do the right thing: two enter the woods, one comes out.

Toby: How do you respond to them?
ReplyDeleteWendy/Mary: Tell them to go fly a kite.

ReplyDeleteWell golly, maybe Dave and Paula are the last two HAPPY people in all the Worthiverse! A little smooch in the produce aisle and there ya' go!
ReplyDeleteIf Toby and Mary are such great bffs, why hasn't she been reading the "Ask Wendy" column daily?
ReplyDeleteFriendship at Charterstone is brutal.
Disheartening or dislocating? Easy on the jaw there, Mary.
ReplyDelete"I tell them that life is brutal."
ReplyDeleteSeriously, Mary is pretty down today. Maybe she should go on a cruise and let Toby write "Ask Wendy" for awhile.

@Sandi Ego - On a totally unrelated topic, I was wondering - did you get to see the Big Bay Boom Bust fireworks display in San Diego?
ReplyDeleteWill this plotline ever end? SIGH.

ReplyDeleteMoy's writing is brutal.
ReplyDeleteWas Mary referring to the Ask Wendy column, or to this blog?

ReplyDeleteMary and Toby are back! Life is looking up! Yippee!

Oh, Mama Mia, Mary! When-ah you meet-ah a depressid personal, you do what I-ah do: Tell them to take-ah a cruise!
