Another fun Costa Concordia fact: "Others, blocked or delayed in getting into lifeboats, threw themselves into the water and swam toward the rocks at Point Gabbianara, 100 yards way" (Vanity Fair, May 2012).
It's like history repeating itself... well, maybe not history... more like current events.
Meanwhile, people continue to jump overboard in full business attire. Not jump, really. They actually prefer to dive because, as many faithful readers have pointed out, they have Olympic fever. Nothing adds to your degree of difficulty like diving head first into a murky ocean full of debris from a shipwreck.
Fun facts: "AIUTO" is Italian and means "HELP" in English! "@#$%^&!" is also Italian and means "&*$%^!" in English!
ReplyDeleteNot only has the crowd gone crazy, but Wilbur and Dawn, according to panel 2, are catching yellow fever. And goatees. Life IS brutal.
ReplyDeleteI know everyone can be a little tense when a ship is sinking, but that's no reason for Dawn to call her father an SOB.
ReplyDeleteO! M! G!!! Is Moy going to kill off Wilbur? What did he ever do to her except provide countless hours of entertainment? If Wilbur joins Aldo in comics heaven, it'll be a sad, sad day!
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm pretty sure Wilbur is going to die. We know this from reading the real account of the disaster. I'll miss him. :(
ReplyDeleteLife is brutal.
This endless pandering to pontificate over a real tragedy, coupled with the screaming inanity of the cartoonish depiction of events...
ReplyDeleteWilbur. Must. Die.
@speedy--hilarious!
ReplyDelete100 yds. doesn't seem that far to me. Or Usain Bolt.
The gondoliers are coming out of every possible Ship Orifice, it would seem. I can only hope that my dream of a Gondolier Kickline is about to be realized, or perhaps something a little more along the lines of an Esther Williams water ballet with Dawn Weston in a purple maillot at the centre.
(If only *I* were drawing this!)
Well of course they have to kill off Wilbur. It means Mary will have to take over his column permanently. And we all know that she needs a larger forum for bringing the kind of enlightenment and comfort only she can provide!
ReplyDeletePlus, then Dawn will be saddled for the rest of her life with the guilt of knowing her endless pity-party was the reason he became shark food.
Karma is brutal!
No pity party for the orphaned Dawn, I'm afraid. This has all the smug, cloying earmarks of Moy's "life is worth living, especially in Santa Royale" platitude just over the horizon.
ReplyDeletewell, call me shocked! Who KNEW Dawn was a "strong swimmer"!?!?!
ReplyDeleteDawn could be described as a strong whiner, a strong googler, a strong couch potato (where "Game of Thrones" is concerned), but I never knew she was a strong swimmer.
ReplyDeleteI've had a premonition that Wilbur was doomed ever since he started planning this trip--but I sure hope I'm wrong!
Where is Georgio? Is he the captain?
ReplyDeleteAs comics often hear when joking about current events, this storyline is Too Soon!
Wilbur deeply regrets his decision to economize by choosing a cruise ship without life jackets.
ReplyDeleteI'm delighted to report that I knew the meaning of "Aiuto!" That's what Scarpia gasps after Tosca stabs him. Cue the Puccini!
Although panel two is downright creepy today, I found it interesting that Hoda Kotb is among the other passengers in panel 3.
ReplyDelete@Shmoopie - Aldo would more likely be in comics... inferno.
As Wanders pointed out, the people abandoning ship are diving instead of jumping. Good way to get severe neck, spine, and head injuries...
I just want the answer to one question- who has the bigger life insurance policy- Wilbur or Dawn?
ReplyDeleteI don't know, Meg, but I suspect Moy is the beneficiary. This should be investigated.
ReplyDeleteGood thing this is happening over the weekend, as Dawn does not check her online accounts during this time..
ReplyDeleteMan, that expression on Wilbur's face is scary! I think there's some sort of plot here-did he take out the "trip life insurance" that they offered at the travel agency! He looks more like he's going to throttle her than throw her over the side!
