Mary Worth 1,372

Neither can I! Gee, I guess life isn't so brutal after all, is it Dawn.

Unless you're one of the families still mourning the loss of 32 victims on the Costa Concordia less than seven months ago. For them, life is brutal and this adaptation (blatant rip off?) from the excellent Vanity Fair article has been more than a little insulting.

  1. You know, I was thinking the same thing. Too soon, Karen Moy, too soon.

Meanwhile, back in Santa Royale, Mary and Jeff take in a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" . . .

  2. The rescuers stand by, stoic, yet repulsed by the Westons. I like the Robocoplike uniforms on them; probably left over in Uncle Joe's bag of tricks from his DC comics days.

  3. Wanders, where's the secret message?

  4. 1. I second Wanders' comment.

    2. Are the copter rescuers cyborgs? (They should have to type a code to prove that THEY'RE not robots.)

    3. In the first panel, Dawn seems to be surprised to see Wilbur ("Dad!... Thank God!"). Was she expecting someone else - perhaps Dave?

  5. That is one spacious helicopter. Wow! And I am with KitKat--why is Dawn so surprised to see her father? Did she think he surpassed the Weight Limit for the rescue tethers?

Thanks to all yesterday who set me straight on the Gun Barrel v. Funnel confusion. How sad IS it that, because this strip is so goofy, I expect to see ANYTHING in it?

    Sigh.

(Now I am antsy, waiting for the next rescue sortie; the BurlyKenos must be saved!)

  6. I think that Robocop is looking down at Wilbur's coat with disgust - it looks like it's made of algae.

  7. dawn and wilbur are sooooooo self centered !!!!

  8. There are not enough odd characters above the number keys on my keyboard to say what I'm really thinking about this pile of effort that Moy and Giella have spewed forth.

  9. This whole plot line is a noticeable change from the Mary Worth drivel where a Big Message is learned by the characters. So far, all Dawn and Wilbur (and their fellow passengers) have articulated is how glad they are that THEY survived. They don't seem to care about anyone else, but isn't that the way the world is, really? Mary's continuing blather makes her sound SO concerned about those around her, putting people ahead of herself in a phony humanitarian way. . . Uh oh. I feel a Mary vibe beginning where she drowns the self-concerned Wilbur and Dawn with platitudes once they start telling her what happened. They'll wish they'd perished at sea. . .

  10. Wouldn't it be great if the helicopter crashed, killing Wilbur and Dawn, but all of those other poor, abandoned swimmers survived?

  11. Copter crash would be a bold move, but didn't Moy indicate in an interview (to which Mr. Wanders provided a link, I think)that she wanted to do a lot more character development with Dawn? I took her at her word because there does not seem to be an ironic bone in her body. Dawn will soon be telling Mary how much she's grown thanks to this brush with brutality.

  12. Moy has reached a new high (low) in incompetence. It's kine of like a world record that you believe can't possibly be broken.

  13. Dawn and Wilbur need to go home, sit on Park Bench, and have a nice, healing conversation with Hobo. Would that they had done so two months ago.

Is there a secret message today? I feel bereaved.

  14. Standing in for Wilbur in panel two, our special guest...Phil Silvers!

  15. Historic helo rescue by US Coast Guard.
Dan Molthen pilot of a HH-60 and his crew squeezed a record breaking 26 survivors from a sinking ship into their helicopter!!

  16. I'm kind of creeped out by the fact that the Robocop/cyborg rescuers have not uttered a word. Perhaps they have been sent by our alien ant overlords. (I for one welcome them!)

In today's featured panel Wilbur reminds me of a Saturday morning cartoon character, with his crooked glasses and tie askew. There should be stars and planets circling his head. And birds tweeting.

Don't be shy! I'd love to hear what you have to say about Mary Worth. Just keep it clean, that's all I ask. This is a FAMILY FRIENDLY blog. I don't want to moderate comments, but I will if I have to.
