Mary Worth 1,386

If not for the excellent May 2012 Vanity Fair article by Bryan Burrough on the tragic and shameful sinking of the Costa Concordia, Karen Moy wouldn't be sitting here telling us this story! Life is brutal, at best.

  1. The clear liquid in the Westons' glasses is tap water.

    Mary has straight vodka.

  2. Every time I read the phrase "IF NOT FOR THE" (used Saturday, twice Sunday, and again today), into my head pops "If not for the courage of the fearless crew, the Minnow would be lost... the Minnow would be lost."

Here's another recent maritime accident account for Moy to rip off:

  3. What a gleeful father and daughter. When Dawn returns to whatever college she's ostensibly been attending for the past six years, she'll be able to write a bang-up "What I Did on My Summer Vacation" essay. BTW, her neckline has gone from scoop to v-neck.

Everyone's ignoring the lumpy food globs.

  4. If not for the Keno twins and the helicopter crew there also might be more ham sandwiches and salmon balls to go around too.

@Kit Kat: as to the lumpy food globs, cue to an hour from now as a pack of hungry dogs chase Wilbur and Dawn across the grounds of Charterstone, pursuing the mutton balls wrapped in napkins they stealthily hid in their pockets....

  5. @Dave in Parma, I'm picturing the Bumpus hounds (from "A Christmas Story") chasing the Westons. What a sight that would be!

  6. Look, you two, is life brutal or is humanity the best? Make up your minds, because I'm getting dizzy from all the hairpin turns in this conversation.

  7. Oh, Dave in Parma! Keep making Seinfeld references, and I'll be in Deep Smit.

This plotline could smash the record for Rehashing. It has also devolved into such Classic Mary Worth, what with its many hand-to-face panels, amorphous food blobs, inane, meandering conversations, and horrific background illustrations.

How can we not love it?

  8. Following this madness is a sure fire portal to brutal therapy.

  9. Couldn't Moy & Giella save time and money by just reprinting the same panels every day for a week? It would enable the storyline to progress much more quickly

  10. I don't know about any of you, but my newspaper has two holes in it where I have stabbed Dawn in the head with a pencil.

  11. @anonymous: love that paper modification!

  12. i wonder when they are going to tell mary about that poor little girl that was clinging to their leg as they were lifted to safety??? too bad they had to shake her off

  13. And...don't forget the dreaded face touching. Oh my.

  14. I certainly hope Moy is on drugs becuase if she is thinking clearly, she more serious problems.

  15. Oh the 'huge manatee', I mean, HUMANITY... I guess I was thinking of Wilbur when writing the first part of that.

  16. Is Dawn wearing the same outfit she wore on the ship? She must stink like fish and seaweed by now.

I hope those guys do a new podcast soon, because lately they have been on a roll with this story. The one guy who does Wilbur's voice has permanently changed the way I thought Wilbur would sound, and every time I read one of his speech bubbles, I hear it in this guy's voice.

It seems we're winding down now, and that makes me fear for what's next, because Wilbur makes the strip funny. These outsider characters like Nola just don't do it for me.

  17. Can we move on to the Flak gelato and end this tedious dinner party right now?

  18. And let's be thankful for Humanity at it's WORST!
If not for the irresponsible actions of the captain, there would have been no shipwreck. And if not for Dave's text-dump, they wouldn't have been on the ship at all.

  19. There's a podcast? Where?

  20. Secrets of Charterstone

Recent remarks about the collapse of Mary's face- gee, only last week she looked like Judi Dench- have not gone unnoticed by this commenter. Perhaps it is the inevitable end of the Worth strip as we know it. While Ian, Toby, and Wilbur still look much the same, it's obvious that Mary's looks are fading fast.

There is a deep dark secret at Charterstone. Some characters have surrendered their souls to the comics devil in order to maintain their appearance- a la Dorian Gray.
Here are the actual portraits of the Charterstone residents (currently hanging on the wall of Mary's storage unit).

  21. SO. MUCH. TOUCHING. Dawn touches Wilbur. Wilbur touches Dawn. Mary touches her face. Yet (as KitKat pointed out), no one's touching the food.

("the millionaire.... and his wife!" Thanks for the earworm, Thorp!)

Don't be shy! I'd love to hear what you have to say about Mary Worth. Just keep it clean, that's all I ask. This is a FAMILY FRIENDLY blog. I don't want to moderate comments, but I will if I have to.
