Ha ha ha ha! Of course, the couple in the back still mourn the loss of their child when their yacht was struck by a squid caught in a net with a mine. Maritime disasters aren't always hilarious.
The background holds more interest today than Jim and Dawn's conversation. Doctor/Mortician and Pink Bathrobe Lady stare solemnly downward, watching their food morph. They are fascinated when Jim's phantom arm begins to materialize across their trays. Also, in a shocking development, the curtains are YELLOW! This indicates a whole new dynamic in the Worthiverse. Either that, or the colorist got tired of pink curtain jokes on a certain blog.
It's interesting to me that in flirting with her One-Armed Aryan, Dawn reveals a piece of information we've been asking about for weeks: what happened to to the ship. It hit a rock. So did the Costa Concordia. Maybe they can bore us with THAT coincidence (another maritime disaster! ha ha ha) for the next several days.
Dawn and Jim are having a great time playing "I Can Top Your Maritime Disaster!" Look at their expressions of delight! BTW, why does Dawn refer to the Unita del Mare as "my ship" right after saying that she and her father were on the ship?
AND, is Karen Moy continuing to trawl the Internets looking for news items she can exploit? See http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/09/nyregion/09ferry.html?pagewanted=all
As the doctor in the background performs a postmortem on Pink Lady's lunch, Dawn excitedly One-Ups her Aryan Stranger's attempt at a Cathartic Breakthrough.
Meanwhile, Moy's thesaurus has failed her, and she employs the word "accident" twice in the same strip to describe character experiences.
I find myself peering between my fingers each day to see if Giella has inadvertently illustrated "Jim" with a different missing arm from the day before. This is how low the suspense factor has fallen in this strip. . . .
On reexamining the many aspects of Jim, he has appeared to be young/old/middle aged. He is either burly or lean, wears his hair in either a standard trim, or a Jerry Lee Lewis pompadour. The only constants are shirt and hair color. OMG, he's morphing along with the food!
ok, I am wondering why Dawn is sitting up so much higher than Jim?
Anyway, I think Stethoscope Man and the Sad Lady are heading over to Jim and Dawn's table with some bad news. Maybe they've found salmonella in the sandwiches.
Don't be shy! I'd love to hear what you have to say about Mary Worth. Just keep it clean, that's all I ask. This is a FAMILY FRIENDLY blog. I don't want to moderate comments, but I will if I have to.
The couple in the back? Why is the man wearing a stethiscope with a business suit? Or is that a really strange tie?
ReplyDeletePure Jim also suffers from a hairstyle that suddenly changes without warning.

You beat me to the story of the Staten Island ferry, KitKat.
ReplyDeleteMaybe, Moy will next exploit the World Trade Center "incident."
"Hey, you know what else we both have in common? We each have a right arm ha ha ha ha!"

ReplyDeletePegging the "Don't give a damn" meter, Dawn's face touch fails to excite the entire audience.
ReplyDeleteSad thing when we are all mesmerized by incidental figurines off the most depressing wedding cake topper ever.

ReplyDelete@fauxprof, some days Jim's eyes appear to match the color of his shirt. Maybe they'll change, just as Gina's did.
ReplyDeleteMaritime? Or Merry Time?
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'll be here all week!

I just noticed something. Jim is Mary Worth in disguise. Look at Jim. Now look at Mary Worth in Wanders' header.
ReplyDeleteI know, right?!
Maritime, ferrytime,
ReplyDeleteare we aft or bow of this storyline?
Life is brutal for the charmless,
(young love and cruise ships are usually harmless)
but Dawn finds safety in the arms of the armless.
It's Mary time!
@fauxprof: The curtains have been yellow since 9/11...
ReplyDeleteYay for duckduckgoose - hilarious!
ReplyDeletewv: ferryed. I doubt Gerry and the Pacemakers will be singing a song about Jim's ferry trip, though.
@ duckduckgoose, that's really funny!!

A conversation about maritime disasters on Talk Like a Pirate Day! Coincidence?
ReplyDelete. . . Actually, knowing this strip, it probably is.
