Mary Worth 1,601

Do you think if people keep repeating it, we will actually start to believe that Tom works hard? And yet, we've never seen him work a day, nor do we have any idea what kind of work he does. Maybe he's on the Charterstone maintenance crew, quietly working behind the scenes on projects like (very quickly) installing larger mailboxes so the Charterstone residents have room for larger Social Security checks.

  1. You wouldn't have to go all the time if you'd just start eating asparagus.

  2. Now, call me a crashing snob (and I've given her a couple of days' worth of benefit of the doubt), but isn't Marie a little... downmarket... for Charterstone? I really never thought of it as a place where one could pick up the mail in curlers and bathrobe. Maybe dressing her up will be Mary's next meddling project.

  3. I surmise that Tom Harpman introduced himself to his neighbors like this: "Hello. I'm Tom Harpman, and I'm a workaholic."

  4. Marie is even less prepossessing in full face than she is in profile. My guess is that she is fully aware that Beth and Tom are sneaking around behind Elinor's back, and got a great deal of pleasure out of putting Elinor a(oh, so innocently).

Charterstone is full of evil old bats, it seems. Are they allowed to come to the pool parties?

  5. I meant to say, putting Elinor wise, oh so innocently.

  6. Okay so NOW the kelk will hit the fan as Elinor/Skelinor heads home to confront her devious hair-helmeted daughter. Or... will we first see her stewing and plotting revenge for the next week or two before 'the moment of truth'?!? I can barely contain my excitement...

  7. @JustSayin' at 8:57 AM, keep your expectations low, very low. I predict that Elinor will have a 27-second hissyfit before Mary throws some cliche* her way and Tom "wins her over." The Kinley-Harpman bunch will be happy as clams, and we'll never see them again.

    *"Elinor, you're not losing a daughter, you're gaining a hard-working son."

  8. Is it just me, or did Joe forget who he was drawing in today's strip? Marie looks like Elinor, and Elinor looks like Marie.

And, I have to say, that Angry Elinor looks a lot like Angry Jim.

I agree with both Muscato and fauxprof: Marie seems like she's a trailer-trashy drama queen reality show addict who probably sits in her condo with a carton of ciggies and several Pomeranians with no housebreak training who looks out the window a lot and gossips with the maintenance and assisted living help and, at times, Toby.

  9. Skelinor has to go. I guess her Depends are leaking, again.

  10. Giella forgot to add Elinor's speech bubble in the first panel: "&^%$#@!"

  11. I'd like to wager with anyone who can even tell me what Tom-the-workaholic's job is...

  12. OK, After today's strip, I'm even more convinced that ''Marie'' is actually Tony Bennett in drag. And if it is, I wish he'd sing this to Elinor-

  14. Some possible jobs for Tom Harpman: Gigolo, adult film star, automobile crash test dummy.

You know, it's possible that he's unemployed, but just wants to keep the busybodies away, so he tells them that he's too busy at work. Hasn't worked with Mary of course.

No No, KitKat. It's "I'm a lonely workaholic bachelor."

  17. Tom Harpman is hard worker in a the manner of Wilbur Weston: hard-working relative to Dawn Weston.

  19. I think Tom works for Corporation. You know, where Nola got promoted after framing what's-his-name for something or other.
