Mary Worth 1,659

Follow that seagull. He will lead to the water you seek.

This is the part where I embarrass my oldest child by mentioning her in my Mary Worth blog. But tomorrow she leaves for Brigham Young University in Utah, which is only about a million miles away. I'm handling it all pretty well, but I do have my moments where I close my office door and quietly sob. She's going to have an amazing experience and I'm super proud of her. But I think its about time I learn to use the Internets. I hear that it helps people stay in touch, although it can also be a scam.

Here's a picture we took in 2001 at Indian Echo Caverns in Pennsylvania. On Monday, we were back there with friends and took another picture in the same spot.

  1. How panel one should read today.

Info box: "The next day, Mary takes ANOTHER hike on the resort grounds."

Mary's thoughts: "This Arizona air is easy to breathe! I just wish I had remembered to bring water!"

  2. Shannon has exiled herself to the desert after really dropping the ball for Aggie. Shame replaces that blase' disregard for a real degree in therapy.

    But cool hat, Wanders!

  3. Turns out it's not Shannon, but an escapee from a Mexican border prison.

  4. This Arizona air is easy to breathe! I need to let atmospheric oxygen enter my lungs and be absorbed! I need to remember to drink agua! And eat a healthy delicious midday meal! Phew what a hectic day, at my age it's all I can do to keep up with my bodily functions checklist.

I like how Mary's putting her hand to her temple in panel 2. She's actually "seeing" Shannon through a peyote-induced hallucinogenic haze, or it's another psychic mind meld like when they shared thought bubbles.

  5. If it's not Shannon crouched over the mangled corpse of Aggie, I'll be disappointed.

Yes, I know I'll be disappointed, but really at this point I'm living on the slightest shreds of hope that either this vacation will liven up or we'll get back Charterstone and real nail-biters like who's going to babysit Elinor...

  6. I'm with Muscato on the corpse idea, but with Shannon as the victim and Angry Avacado Aggie as the prime suspect. That isn't a seagull, it's a vulture!

  7. I hope we haven't seen the last of (an alive) Aggie. I've been looking forward to seeing her in a Harvest Gold short set.

On the other hand, I'm all for this turning into a murder mystery.

  8. You haven't changed a bit Wanders. Best of luck to your daughter!

P.S. I understand about the sniffling. My child is going off to college shortly.

  9. Congrats on a job well done, Wanders. Our eldest son just started his second year at Creighton (1298.15 miles away). They told freshman to "call your mother every week". This, plus an occasional Skype call, got us through the first year without too many tears.

And now, as our middle son prepares to move into his freshman dorm I can tell you it feels a bit like wandering through a desert. Don't forget that you have water to drink! :)

  10. Mary's "canteen" is really one of her many concrete purses that she filled with water and cinched around her waist. It's really quite a sporty look.

  11. Congratulations to Miss Wanders, and to her parents. Remind her to remember her water bottle as she learns her way around campus.

Despite the tension-filled (?) build-up, the Shannon sighting will probably be nothing more dramatic than that she stopped to remove a pebble from her shoe so Mary can catch up to her and they can walk together discussing how inadequate Shannon feels.

  13. I just realized that, when streamlined for importance, Mary's dialog is this:

Air is to breathe. I drink water.

Wanders, make sure the College Daughter has this on a sticky note someplace, and you'll feel better.

  14. I love the idea of this turning into a murder mystery. Maybe MW could meddle in the affairs of the Arizona State police, just the way Jessica Fletcher did on "Murder, She Wrote".

Angela Lansbury can play Mary in the eventual movie of this scintillating script!

  15. Good luck to your daughter, and to your family, Wanders! It's definitely bittersweet to watch them go...knowing that nothing will ever be quite the same again. A big step, but a necessary one! (And you wouldn't want it any other way.)

On your way to BYU, you should swing by Arizona and walk in the desert with Mary. Since Shannon's BIG FAIL, Mary has set up an advice-dispensing kiosk among the cacti and rattlesnakes. Be sure to drink water, and if you see Aggie...run!

  16. SUNDAY:
    Shannon, just say say "NO!!"

  17. It doesn't matter what Shannon says; Mary will interfere anyway. It's just how she rolls.

And then, for good measure, she'll give that Aggie a few things to consider as well.

Once those things are taken care of, her mission will be complete and back to Charterstone she will go.

  18. As Mary steps back into the pocket, preparing to launch the football down the field to Aggie, Shannon blitzes wildly before sacking Mary.

Don't be shy! I'd love to hear what you have to say about Mary Worth. Just keep it clean, that's all I ask. This is a FAMILY FRIENDLY blog. I don't want to moderate comments, but I will if I have to.
