Mary Worth 1,714

Wha....?? Is Shelly getting some sort of reward for something or other? It sounds familiar, but I guess I haven't really been paying attention.

What kind of award is this? She is a STAFF MEMBER! I have been employed in the nonprofit sector my entire career, I've exceeded my goals, and not to brag but I've been pretty committed. And I've never gotten an award. I've gotten a paycheck. Just like Shelly Cohen gets every two weeks. And if she doesn't meet her goals, there's going to be some explaining to do. Staff members don't get awards, unless they are retiring. Is she retiring? Because what staff members do is GIVE awards to people they want to get more money or free volunteer labor out of. That's what staff members do. No self respecting nonprofit organization is going to spend money on an award to a member of its fund raising staff!

  1. Please don't leave Shelly's apartment until you are sure that you are fully Waldorf ready!

  2. Good point, Toots! The 6 ants on the door (who were elected by their sisters to attend the event) are all wearing elbow-lenght gloves, rhinestone-enhanced exoskeletons and tiaras!

  3. Wanders, you are right on with your observations. However, this is no self-respecting nonprofit organization, this is Promise Haven in the Worthiverse, and about the farthest from reality one can get. And, we all know that the real star of the show will be Mary Worth, the Founder of the Feast.

Since Shelly is costumed in ersatz academic regalia, she must be expecting the award to be some type of honorary degree.

  4. Shelley has to pound thru Mary's skull that the award is for HER, not for Mary.

  5. Since HILL.....N is so impressed by DOSC and The Haven, maybe it's a community or national award. That isn't what's bugging me.

I'm increasingly irked by the frequency of Mary's pointing in this plot. She has pointed at DOSC a LOT. It's really rude and bossy. Today, DOSC has thrown a gang sign at her in Panel One, and it still doesn't stop her from pointing.

  6. Nance: I thought maybe DOSC had just given Spock's live-long-and-prosper sign one too many times and her index and middle fingers had begun to meld as had her ring and little fingers.

  7. I'm just trying to recover from the shocking plot twist that's seen Mary become Waldorf-ready in a tailored lilac evening suit, while DOShelly has surprised us all by ditching her signature look and donning what appear to be couture surgical scrubs. Combine that with an 80%-off purse, and she's bound to be the belle of this long-anticipated award gala.

All right already! We KNOW DOSC is getting an award for her commitment to Promise Haven. We KNOW Mary was her inspiration. We know because we've been constantly told this for the past two weeks. Enough already. It's not like the cure for world poverty or cancer was developed by these two. Sheesh!

  9. Wanders, you hit the nail on its non-profit head with your comments. . .As someone who has worked in the non-profit sector since 1981 in every mileu from political work to social services, the possible explanations I see for Shelly getting this award are these. 1. She comes from a family rolling in Old Money, and either she or some beaming relative will donate to the organization in the wake of her award. 2. She has spent untold hours doing UNPAID labor for the organization. She is a role model for those slackers who labor at Promise Haven under the delusion that they should be PAID for their work instead of sacrificing on the altar of Sincerely Caring About People. My guess in Shelly's case is the latter.

  10. @Yahoonski--Since I'm not an expert, having never watched Star Trek in any generation, my knowledge of that gesture is purely through popular culture. I didn't want to insult any experts, so I didn't mention it in case I was mistaken. But I thought of that, too!

  11. So, someone told DOSC she's getting an award. She doesn't know what it's for, other than her "..longtime commitment to the Haven."

Shelly is getting a perfect attendance award.

  12. It's called Promise Haven, but the cool kids just call it The Haven.

I wonder what's going on in Vietnam.

  13. Can somebody tell me if it is Shelly or Moy who is suffering from severe memory loss.

  14. DOShelley is getting a lifetime award because nobody could figure out how to get her butt into a productive job. And she certainly wasn't going to learn that from Mary.

But let's not let mere facts befuddle this fascinating tale.

  15. If the cab that's taking them to the Waldorf has had its meter running the whole time these two have been ready to go, Mary is going to be sorry she spent money on that handbag, 80% off or not.

  16. A few years ago, my firm had their annual holiday party at the Waldorf, and I am sorry to say, it was a let down. No room to sit, a bit shabby, ugly interior design (drapes, carpets, furniture)and the booze was sparse. SO I expect Mary and DOS to have a great time.

PS DOS seems to have gotten her inspiration for dressing tonight from an early Maude episode.

  17. God will get you for that, Chester.

  18. Maybe Shelly's award is for shape-shifing. She is able to change her face and hairline each day - actually in each frame. Changing faces, changing lives...you know, all that hopey-changey stuff. It's so Haven.

Don't be shy! I'd love to hear what you have to say about Mary Worth. Just keep it clean, that's all I ask. This is a FAMILY FRIENDLY blog. I don't want to moderate comments, but I will if I have to.
