Poor Iris. Anything beyond living off a small savings is too much for her to comprehend. Baking? Oh, it's magic! Tommy taking advantage of her? No way, butt out! I wonder if she is constantly needing resuscitation in her college class, so blown away by knowledge as she is.
Thanks to Wanders for drawing our attention to "Mary's Known as Great Cook." Karen Moy's writing reminds me of the Mini Page, a children's feature that's included in the Sunday comics of our local paper (the formerly respected Plain Dealer, now a shell of its former self). Moy has the same "let's keep this simple for the kiddies" style, e.g., "Eating together is a big part of dating." The Rookie Cookie recipes in the Mini Page are usually far from healthy and include the caveat, "You will need an adult's help with this recipe." Just like Mary's cooking....
Mary, practice doesn't always assure a good outcome. I recall a quote from a an old baseball guy who said something like "I can work out with my mule every day, but that mule ain't ever gonna win the Kentucky Derby."
Does anyone else see Tommy becoming John Dill's assistant in the near future, freeing Wilbur to move in with Iris?
On a side note, what caught me on the 'cast' link off Wander's link was that Mary was born in Jennings, OH and is a graduate of Denison University. And while there is no Jennings, OH (just a Fort Jennings, a half square mile plot on the western end of the state), there very definitely is a Denison University east of Columbus and south of Mansfield. No word on if they offer a graduate level degree in Meddling.
Unfortunately, Iris is channeling the sentiments of so many these days when she talks about baking something "beautiful". . . The point of food, Iris, is not that it LOOKS good (those tomatoes in the store look good this time of year but taste like cardboard.) The point of food is it's supposed to TASTE good. . . Besides, if she thinks food rendered by a comic strip artist looks beautiful, she seriously needs a diet revision. No wonder her judgment about Tommy is so off. . .
@Dave in Parma at 9:55 AM, thanks; I'd overlooked the "cast" link. So much startling info! Toby's given name is Victoria, and she's "an accomplished artist specializing in miniatures" (miniature clowns?)! Jeff's given name is Jefferson! Dawn Weston "endured weight issues and bullying at her former school in Connecticut"!
I have visited Denison University twice but must have missed the statue of illustrious alumna Mary Worth. Although not of MW's stature, Steve Carrell and Jennifer Garner are also Denison grads.
I've visited Denison, too. I am sure they're very proud of MW. Having spent most of my working life at one of Ohio's large state-supported universities, I'm fascinated by the smaller private schools. This Spring Break we visited Kenyon in Gambier, OH. Beautiful campus, but it costs $56,000 per semester! Eeep!
YES! I LOVE IT! Mary Worth, blueberry muffins, platitudes, and visions of a dreamy layabout former drug dealer. I called it yesterday (except for that last, dreamy little surprise). More! More! More! Bring on the advice!
No Wilbur sightings even by Mary?!? What, was he so devastated by Iris' little hissy-fit that he went into hiding?
I can see it now... holed up in his apartment, comforting himself with an endless supply of bologna sandwiches until he emerges looking like a Caucasian-colored Michelin man.
But seriously, any bets on how long it takes for Mary to set up a dinner to bring those two lovebirds together again??
Don't be shy! I'd love to hear what you have to say about Mary Worth. Just keep it clean, that's all I ask. This is a FAMILY FRIENDLY blog. I don't want to moderate comments, but I will if I have to.

ReplyDeleteFriday's strip:
ReplyDeleteMary says, "How are things with Tommy nowadays?" Yes! Let the meddling begin! Buwahaha! Buwahahahahahaha!
Have another muffin and another cup of tea, Iris, you're in for a LONG lecture!
