Mary Worth 1832

Mary Worth seems to be fishing for news from New York. "Have you ever met Broadway Legend Ken Kensington?"

Today's Full Strip

  1. Mary: What's it like where you live in New York?
Olive: It's fine...I guess. Kind of New Yorky, I mean. Not like here, with flowers and grass and people who show you things. Nice things, I mean.
Mary: Well, Olive. I have lots more nice things to show you here in Santa Royale! Have you ever seen a whale up close?

  2. Olive: Oh, there's this nice old guy who works as the super in our building. He came to New York to apprentice with some pastry chef but got kicked out for having no original. Ideas. He used to make me pink cupcakes and tell me to let my imagination run wild.

  3. Nominee for the next Charterstone Jukebox:
I Never Promised You a Rose Garden by Lynn Anderson.

  4. The Charterstone roses are unlike any roses I've ever seen. Some of the blooms are stuck on shrubs and others grow on iris-like leaf blades. That Mr. Allora must be a gardening wizard. He may even supervise the Flower Fairies.

Okay, how many more weeks until Mary shows Evy and Ed the error of their neglectful ways? Moy always telegraphs her plots immediately and then runs them into the ground until we all cry uncle.

  5. Olive, do your parents abuse you? Are they on drugs? Are they having marital problems? Are they criminals? Come on... give me something to feed my dark, dark soul.

Yes, Olive, it's going to be a wonderful summer now that you have an elderly busybody to hang with. Such fun you will have watching the roses grow and learning how to stay alive in the water.

  7. Sadly, by today's second panel those "fairies" seem to have bitten off Olives right arm at the elbow.

  8. @KitKat--In the case of Tommy Beedie, it's not so much that KM ran the storyline into the ground as it is that she abruptly plopped it there and left it.

We here in Comments come up with vastly more interesting and well-motivated, eventful plots than she does. Admittedly, not hard to do.

  9. This fixation with New York is getting out of control - we can't have Mary jetting out of Santa Royale every other storyline just because Manhattan calls to her (of course, it's where she got her start back in the '30s, if memory serves, but still).

It's as if there were only three communities in the entire Worthiverse: the sunny home base that is Santa Royale (which apparently consists of one condo complex, multiple low-end restaurants, a convention center, Santa Royalmart, Hospital, and University); the seductive Big Apple, home to Broadway stars, displaced pastry chefs, Dear Old friends, and muggers; and of course, the hellhole that is Goleta (as with dragons on old maps, a basically unknown place where there be kidnappers).

  10. yes, just once, why couldn't these newcomers be from... I dunno, let's say...Nebraska!

Oh, Mary and Olive will have SUCH fun playing together all summer! Tomorrow they can make a batch of Kelk cookies and then fly kites with Wilbur and Dawn. And the fairies can come, too, if they bring their own kites!

  11. Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow?

  12. @Muscato, there is one other important place in the Worthiverse: Peace Village in Vietnam. Thankfully, we've never seen it. I shudder to think how Joe would draw that foreign land.

  13. @Peggy Olson, I remember Mary hopping a plane to Vietnam to save Dr. Jeff from death's door. The clueless Peace Village doctors knew nothing about antibiotics until Mary suggested administering one. The only part of Peace Village I recall is a befuddled Vietnamese doctor standing by Jeff's bed.

Spending summer at the side of Mary Worth - every child's dream!

  14. It's fine...I guess. Sometimes my Uncle Shovey buys me raspberry pizza with money he gets from nice people in Central Park.

  15. I hate to bring up logic when discussing this strip, but why didn't Olive's parents just send her to camp for the summer instead of shlepping her off to some adults only/senior community if they want to "catch up"? Also, if you're vacationing in California and you're rich, wouldn't you rent someplace near the beach or that's scenic or has more amenities than just a blah complex with a pool? Wouldn't you rent a house so that you have your own pool?

  16. SATURDAY

I don't care how she may have meant it, I think MW's remark in the last Panel today is downright mean.

    And hurtful. Yikes.

  17. I agree, Nance.

I barely noticed though, because I was busy trying to decode her comment in the first panel. I did not succeed.

  18. I think "Gem Kingdom" must be some kind of fantasy game, where gathering diamonds is the way to advance.

While Mary blathers on about this, poor little Olive is munching on the roses.I guess the chicken thingies weren't all that good.

  19. OMG! Mary Worth believes in evil-ution!

  20. So...this is going to be a summerlong story about a neglected girl who makes stuff up and how Mary gets her parents to make more time for her? And then she stops making stuff up and all is well? We're in for a long summer, folks!

Don't be shy! I'd love to hear what you have to say about Mary Worth. Just keep it clean, that's all I ask. This is a FAMILY FRIENDLY blog. I don't want to moderate comments, but I will if I have to.
