Mary Worth 2318

"Come to dinner another time, and bring your boyfriend."

  1. If you didn't want to encourage speculation or conclusion, Dawn, you shouldn't have said you were going a-yoga-ing with the prof. Now, everyone will know and the scrutiny and speculation will intensify. Or, is that just part of your plan?

  2. I'm wondering if all this is leading to a resolution along the lines of Jeannie C. Riley's Harper Valley PTA.

  3. Further proof that Dawn is utterly tone deaf to nuance and dumber than a box of rocks. and a heart to heart with Mary or Wilbur isn't going to help. DWET, talk to your sister and slap her upside the head!

  4. Looking back at yesterday's strip, Cathy never specified who are "the others" who are meeting for dinner. I hope the surly students from a few days ago are part of the group, and they use the occasion to plot revenge against Dawn and Harlan. They could hide in the shrubbery outside Harlan's home and take photos when Dawn arrives for Yoga Practice with Harlan. (BTW, I've worked at a university for over 20 years, and students do not issue invitations for "dinner at six.")

  5. Dawn's friend looks like Toby's younger sister, doesn't she? Perhaps she's an art major, minoring in clown portraiture.

  6. Are any of the Commenters here Yoga People? I am not a Practitioner myself, but the phrase "doing yoga" sounds terribly awkward to me. Does one "do yoga?" Is that how it is termed? I thought it was something which was "practiced."

    Sigh. I know.

    Never mind.

  7. Another "sheesh!" sighting! This time I'm reminded of Wally Cleaver in "Leave it to Beaver." (Even as a little kid I thought this show was stupid and boring)

  8. Zoom in on Panel One and Dawn's necklace pendant....Might the "I Heart Harlan" be a giveaway?!

  9. Too bad this isn't a cross-over. Then Cathy could say "Ack!"

  10. Sheesh made me giggle, x-ray's "ACK" made me laugh out loud at work. I hate when they think I enjoy my job.

  11. "Sheesh!" What?! Dawn actually aware that something she does has an impact on someone else?! That "Sheesh!" speaks volumes.

  12. The "Sheesh" would've made sense in response to her friend asking the prying question in P1, but after she apologizes and tells Dawn she's welcome to join them some other time, not so much.

  13. @Yahoonski, Dawn has always been slow on the uptick. That's why she's been pursuing an undergraduate degree for 17 years.

@fauxprof: I will have a talk with Dawn, but I won't slap her, as I'm a peace-loving Santa Royalian and thus not inclined to violence. My preferred tactic is to offer the other person a salty margarita and then hang out and chat a bit. But with Dawn, that's usually not so fun, because, you see ... she's kind of a dweeb.

@Yahoonski: I think that Dawn is thinking "sheesh" before her friend invites her to dinner another time.

@KitKat: I think college students make plans to meet up at the cafeteria at six. That's what I was imagining this was. Wouldn't it be fun if the faculty also went to the cafeteria, and drippy Harlan Jones walked up to a table of college students and only said hello to Dawn and had a lengthy, dull, private conversation in front of all of her friends? Then one of them could say, "Hey, Dr. Jones, I'm in your class, too, but you didn't even notice me!" ... EMBARRASSING!!!

  15. Dawn has blue eyes again! Just sayin'!

  16. I think "do yoga" is pretty well established, e.g. "I do yoga at 6 every morning, so don't call me then." "Practice" yoga, as someone pointed out a few days ago, can sound a little silly.

  17. Dawn, I LOVE what you've done with your hair! Plus, you really told off that chatty Cathy, didn't you? Good for you! You rock, Dawn! But ... why are you making that hand gesture in panel two when you're only talking to yourself? People with think you're ... (fill in the blank for three points).

  18. WEDNESDAY: Cathy might benefit from doing more yoga, as her botched attempt at utkatasana has turned those student onlookers to stone.

  19. Is the enrollment at Santa Royal University / College / Community College / State U so low that they've installed a whole bunch of concrete statues to make the population seem bigger?

  20. There certainly is a lot of empty green space on campus, too.

    THURSDAY
"No, it's okay! I need this right now!" says a newly flexible Dawn.
Poor Dawn! Harlan is just not that into you!

  22. Is it just me, or is the drawstring on Harlan's sweatpants not family friendly?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Harlan has an earworm going: "Dawn, go away. PLEASE go away!" (@Maxwell Bacon. See the comments at Comics Kingdom. Definitely not family friendly. You'll have to go through Seattle PI, though. Cleveland PD censored all comments out of existence a couple of years ago.)

  24. Drawstring, shmawstring! Is Dawn wearing a gymnastics-type leotard that reveals her youthful thighs?
Seriously, how long is this whole "we're just friends" going to go on? I guess until Dawn stops by unannounced one day and finds Harlan in the backyard training on his homemade American Ninja Warrior course with another student. "Oh, hi Dawn, this is Tiffany. We're just friends enjoying training together. Yea, about that whole yoga thing. I'm kinda done with it. Thanks for stopping by. See you in class!"

  25. Mary can expect a visit from Dawn shortly after this interlude at Heartbreak Hotel. Perhaps it was an omen, but Dawn seemed to be sporting MW's eyes and nose in yesterday's first panel.

  26. Is this how Ian and Toby met? Maybe Toby wanted to learn how to play the bagpipes and went to Ian's house. They were also "just friends" - until they weren't....

  27. I think Karen Moy knows of yoga but not much about it.
There's a reason people go to studios to do yoga. There a reason that several thousand(?) people in the country call themselves yoga instructors. It's because yoga is generally taught by a professional, not just picked up somewhere. Yes, you can learn from a book or a DVD, and if you have been practicing a while and have a routine down, you would do it by yourself, at home. But that would only work for Harlan, not Dawn. And he would be teaching her, they would not be practicing together. And they would not be chatting during yoga, because you're supposed to be breathing and concentrating. Yoga is not aerobics -- it's inward-focused. Sorry for the rant. I have to go do some yoga/mindfulness now to calm down...

  28. Hmmm. Harlan calls Dawn a "devotee". This plot is heading more and more in the Heaven's Gate cult direction.

Don't be shy! I'd love to hear what you have to say about Mary Worth. Just keep it clean, that's all I ask. This is a FAMILY FRIENDLY blog. I don't want to moderate comments, but I will if I have to.
