That's the Wilbur we know. Three-hair combover, hairy arms, soon to be masticating a carrot muffin. Also, soon to be asking Mary to take over "Ask Wendy". Yep, it's deja vu all over again.
I guess Mary decided it was too much effort to keep cleaning the doorknob anytime someone touched it and just had it removed altogether. Now anyone can push the door open since there is no latch at all.
Looks like Mary is wearing some version of blue jeans...An upgrade to her wardrobe that brings it up to about 1955. What's next bobby socks and loafers?
Aha! I called it! Wilbur has asked Mary to take over "Ask Wendy" for him. Now, while I do my victory lap, I confidently predict that tomorrow will be Wednesday, the days will start growing shorter, and Christmas will be on December 25. fauxprof, seeress of the obvious, at your service.
I thought Mary had permanently taken over "Ask Wendy." I would have been surprised only if Wilbur had asked Mary to give it back. They could have had an arm-wrestling match. And, speaking of arms, the hairy one menacing Wilbur with a piece of muffin can't be Wilbur's, at least not at that angle.
Muffins and beverage, but no sign of Chin Napkin! Mary is getting slipshod.
Wierd how Mary's first question to Wilbur isn't "When?", but "Where are you going?".... So, if he isn't doing something interesting, will Mary reject his request?
I can't tell whether Mary is apprehensive about the prospect of taking over "Ask Wendy" again indefinitely or trying to restrain her excitement. I'm going to go with "apprehensive." Mary always wants to make sure that she gets the proper credit for giving advice. She probably doesn't like people thinking that some nebulous "Wendy" is helping them.
Congrats, Fauxprof, seeress to damned who read this drivel. And I think Shmoopie may be right (or should be) about the Sandwich Islands. But if they do go back to Italy I suggest they first get mobbed by pickpockets in Rome, and then visit either Vesuvius or Mt. Etna. I also wonder if Mary will get an even bigger keyboard and display screen for this stint as Wendy.
Wow- Wilbur certainly is pouncing. Looks like he is about to lick her face. The opposite of anthropomorphism. You nailed Mary's body language, fauxprof.
Why cant Wilbur do Ask Wendy while he is overseas? Just email his editor every day, using his hotel WiFi...oh, not in this strip. Wilbur cant even work his dial-up modem.
Apparently Karen Moy has forgotten that Wilbur's survivors column is called "I'm Still Alive!" Continuity is not her strong suit (we can include engaging plots and characters in that too).
Hey Wilbur, You're pretty clueless for a guy who makes a living by convincing others he understands people and their personal problems.
1. You're definitely invading Mary's personal space. 2. Nobody who reads the Santa Royale News will be interested about survival stories of victims of an earthquake and tsunami that happened more than 5 years ago. 3. Nobody in Japan will be interested in sharing their stories with you, especially since so much time has past since the tragic events of 3/11/11. 4. You really should stay home and keep an eye on your lonely and socially awkward daughter, who is convinced that spending private time with her college professor on his living room floor is a good idea.
KitKat, let's not forget realistic dialogue when enumerating Moy's non-strong suits. I give her high marks for professional courtesy, however, as she obviously has heard that Wanders is busy moving and has decided to accommodate him by slowing the action to an even more glacial pace than usual.
Mary ENJOYED writing the "Ask Wendy" column last time (although she really HATED not getting full credit for it), and she also really ENJOYED the cold, hard cash for doing the work! YES!
My first thought was "Oh no, not Tommy and Iris" but there are possibilities here. Maybe we're not done with Dawn's story arc yet. After all, getting involved with an ex-con sandwich shop janitor who still lives with his mother could be the ultimate Dawn dating disaster. Besides, it's quite possible that Wilbur has never introduced her to Tommy and Iris.
fauxprof, wouldn't it be great if Tommy enters the scene and talks some sense to Dawn? If anyone could recognize a sleazy, unethical situation, it would be a reformed, drug dealing broom pusher. Maybe he'll question the professor's motives, even though all the responsible adults in Dawn's life are clueless.
OR Moy will drop the Ninny and the Professor story altogether. Time for a pool party and new crisis!
Mary's glad that Iris and Tommy are "finally" moving into the two-bedroom apartment? Does this mean that all this time Tommy has been sleeping on the sofa, or in the bathtub, or on the kitchen floor, or on a hanger in a closet, or...?
If we follow Wilbur in his wanderings, the artwork should be interesting. I expect Caucasian Japanese people every day except Sunday, when they suddenly look Asian.
@fauxprof: YES! Please let that happen! I want to see Dawn dating Tommy. That would be awesome! PLUS it would have a quasi-incestuous aspect, as they are sort of step-siblings. Soap-opera gold!
How is it that Wilbur is the official advice columnist when Mary is the advice guru? (It is she that we worship, after all!)
June hasn't been given much to work with again this week for the Sunday Summary. Just Mary and Wilbur and a purple couch. I wonder if she'll show Wilbur stuffing an entire carrot muffin in his face?
What will the next leg of this marvelous journey be?
1. Wilbur in Japan interviewing earthquake victims years after the fact? (Intriguing!)
2. Iris and Tommy moving into their new digs with the possibility of Dawn as a love interest? (AWESOME!)
3. Mary sitting at her gigantic computer typing up (uncredited) advice to people even more desperate than the residents of Charterstone? (possibly mildly interesting, probably kinda boring)
My bets are on option #3, but hope springs eternal!
Shouldn't Wilbur have done research before leaving for Japan? Sounds like a fly-by-night project to me. Maybe he's lying - he really doesn't want to help Iris and Tommy move.
I hope we see June's take on the Beedies tomorrow!
June has captured Wilbur's unusual spirit -- check out his expression in the last panel. I keep thinking that Mary could use some lipstick to look more like herself, though.
@Joolz. I agree about the lipstick. And maybe an upper lip, too. June's an excellent artist, but I think her Mary is a bit too crone-like for my taste. I expect I'll get used to it, and am looking forward to Sunday Tommy and Iris.
I think that the weekday artist and the Sunday artist are approaching each other's work more and more. Wilber has gotten his combover back (as the Comics Curmudgeon noted today( and Mary's Sunday hair is much less free-flowing and more helmet-like today. I can't wait to see Sunday Toby Cameron! She's my FAVOURITE!!! Sigh!
I think Wilbur looks little creepy in panel 4. And Mary's front door is ridiculously wide. I guess she wants to make it easy for advice-seekers to get in.
So, I think Tommy and Iris are just moving down the hall, but I'm not sure. I hope they repeat it a few more times so I can be sure. MAYBE with BOLDFACE.
Don't be shy! I'd love to hear what you have to say about Mary Worth. Just keep it clean, that's all I ask. This is a FAMILY FRIENDLY blog. I don't want to moderate comments, but I will if I have to.
That's the Wilbur we know. Three-hair combover, hairy arms, soon to be masticating a carrot muffin. Also, soon to be asking Mary to take over "Ask Wendy". Yep, it's deja vu all over again.
ReplyDeleteEven more creepy: Wilbur's hand shadow. Is there a spotlight under the floor?
ReplyDeleteI guess Mary decided it was too much effort to keep cleaning the doorknob anytime someone touched it and just had it removed altogether. Now anyone can push the door open since there is no latch at all.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Mary got dressed in the dark today - eesh.
ReplyDeleteMary and Wilbur are going to talk over the carrot muffins, not eat them. Mary's going to plant them to grow carrot muffinettes.
Special note to @fauxprof: NE Ohio is ALL IN - huzzah!
KitKat, much rejoicing hereabouts! Only good news in NEO this morning.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to hazard a guess that we're not done with the plot. I bet Wilbur is concerned about Dawn's "relationship" with Harlan.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Mary is wearing some version of blue jeans...An upgrade to her wardrobe that brings it up to about 1955. What's next bobby socks and loafers?
ReplyDelete@Miss Scarlet: Let's hope that someone is concerned about it! (Bringing back the mean students would be fun, too.)
ReplyDeleteTUESDAY
ReplyDeleteAha!

ReplyDeleteMuffins and beverage, but no sign of Chin Napkin! Mary is getting slipshod.
@KitKat, while Mary takes over "Ask Wendy," muffin service will be provided by Thing.
ReplyDeleteWierd how Mary's first question to Wilbur isn't "When?", but "Where are you going?".... So, if he isn't doing something interesting, will Mary reject his request?
ReplyDeleteI sure hope he's headed back to Italy. So many sights left unseen after the boat capsized.
ReplyDeleteWill Dawn be able to pull herself away from platonic professorial relationships and catty friends to join him?
It's pretty clear to me that Wilbur will travel to the Sandwich Islands.
ReplyDeleteI can't tell whether Mary is apprehensive about the prospect of taking over "Ask Wendy" again indefinitely or trying to restrain her excitement. I'm going to go with "apprehensive." Mary always wants to make sure that she gets the proper credit for giving advice. She probably doesn't like people thinking that some nebulous "Wendy" is helping them.

ReplyDeleteWEDNESDAY. (As predicted.)
ReplyDeleteMary's body language says it all: "Get your hands off me, you great hairy ape!"
Wow- Wilbur certainly is pouncing. Looks like he is about to lick her face. The opposite of anthropomorphism. You nailed Mary's body language, fauxprof.
ReplyDeleteWhy cant Wilbur do Ask Wendy while he is overseas? Just email his editor every day, using his hotel WiFi...oh, not in this strip. Wilbur cant even work his dial-up modem.
ReplyDeleteApparently Karen Moy has forgotten that Wilbur's survivors column is called "I'm Still Alive!" Continuity is not her strong suit (we can include engaging plots and characters in that too).
ReplyDeleteJust picture Wilbur in Japan...
Survivors of the recent earthquakes? The big one in Japan was five years ago...Right on top of current events, I see.
ReplyDeleteI see delicious grilled sushi sandwiches coming up. With extra cheese!
ReplyDeleteHey Wilbur,
ReplyDeleteYou're pretty clueless for a guy who makes a living by convincing others he understands people and their personal problems.

THURSDAY
ReplyDeleteWho doesn't love Mary's levitating teacup illusion, complete with unrealistic steam?
Thursday's episode features a most marvelous way to sip a steaming hot volcanic liquid. How do you do it, Mary? I'd like to know so I can do it, too!
ReplyDeleteBesides the teacup trick, how does Mary prevent the teapot from steaming since it's the source of the volcanic liquid?
ReplyDeleteWilbur looks like a troll in p. 1.
KitKat, let's not forget realistic dialogue when enumerating Moy's non-strong suits. I give her high marks for professional courtesy, however, as she obviously has heard that Wanders is busy moving and has decided to accommodate him by slowing the action to an even more glacial pace than usual.
ReplyDeleteMary ENJOYED writing the "Ask Wendy" column last time (although she really HATED not getting full credit for it), and she also really ENJOYED the cold, hard cash for doing the work! YES!
ReplyDeleteI know this is late in the game but Mary's door must be seven feet wide.
ReplyDeleteFRIDAY

Wilbur has hair on his scalp, not on his arms. Is that really Wilbur Weston?
ReplyDeleteJune has captured Wilbur's unusual spirit -- check out his expression in the last panel. I keep thinking that Mary could use some lipstick to look more like herself, though.
ReplyDelete@Joolz. I agree about the lipstick. And maybe an upper lip, too. June's an excellent artist, but I think her Mary is a bit too crone-like for my taste. I expect I'll get used to it, and am looking forward to Sunday Tommy and Iris.

ReplyDeleteSunday
ReplyDeleteIt SEEMS that MARY and WILBUR feel a NEED to EMPHASIZE a LOT today.
I think Wilbur looks little creepy in panel 4. And Mary's front door is ridiculously wide. I guess she wants to make it easy for advice-seekers to get in.
ReplyDeleteSo, I think Tommy and Iris are just moving down the hall, but I'm not sure. I hope they repeat it a few more times so I can be sure. MAYBE with BOLDFACE.
