Yesterday Iris and Zak were walking off together into the pastoral future. Today Iris sees Zak talking to a purple-haired girl and decides that she and Zak have to part (and just a week before Valentine's Day!). What's the German for "whiplash"?
BTW, Zak's motivation in this relationship has never been explained. Does he have Mommy Issues? Does he think Iris has money and can buy him a razor and a new shirt (and pay his tuition)?
Oh no! Iris is showing MATURITY! We just spent a whole week with these two vacillating on a park bench while Iris uttered something (kind of) inscrutable in German, and it ends with a kiss-off in the school hallway?! THAT's the message of this plot? MATURITY?? Puh-lease...Just the typical Worthiverse plot where the female character bucks up with self-denial, and the men get to skip off and enjoy themselves... Ick!
Wow! This was even worse than I thought! "Mary Worth" (the strip) really does try to build up dramatic potential only to drop the ball and leave us WITHOUT ANY DRAMA WHATSOEVER!!! Mary Worth (the person, er ... the robot masquerading as a person) should just change her "advice" to one standard message ... "Just do whatever is the MOST BORING THING POSSIBLE." Oh, boy! Good grief! Argh!! @#$%!!!
Well what the heck did they do Saturday night after she channeled Sergeant Schultz? Was the remainder of the evening so terrible she had to break up with him the next day?
As someone brought up yesterday, all the Goethe quotes being used in this comic so far have been very very loose translations, more poetic paraphrase lite riffs.
Perhaps Iris' translation from German to English in yesterday's strip is an intentional meta commentary on the abilities of writer-translators to twist the meaning of the original work in order to create a different interpretation.
Sie liebt dich, yeah, yeah, yeah. Sie liebt dich, yeah, yeah, yeah. Sie liebt dich, yeah, yeah, yeah. But you blew the Bogie test so she's going back to Wilbur.
Awwwwww, Cinderella must hurry back to her section 8 housing before the Prince falls hopelessly in love with the peasant princess, awwwww, who could have seen that coming? I can't wait until after intermission when the handsome prince pursues her and slays the fearsome dragon Wilbur-with his awesome dance moves!
Don't be shy! I'd love to hear what you have to say about Mary Worth. Just keep it clean, that's all I ask. This is a FAMILY FRIENDLY blog. I don't want to moderate comments, but I will if I have to.
How do you say "Whirlwind Romance" in German? And please add the nuance of a Whirlwind which has the propensities of a Glacier.
ReplyDeleteNOOOOOO! This can't happen! She just professed her love for him and said that nothing else matters. Now she's gone psycho chick and done a 180.
ReplyDeleteI really want this affair to blossom because it has the promise of being such a slow-motion train wreck.

ReplyDeleteDarn! Just as this dull awful story was finally getting interesting. Talk about a letdown.
ReplyDeleteI think I'll go cry in my bowl of Splak.

ReplyDeleteZak is probably trying his new "Ich liebe dich" line on the purple-haired Fraulein. Her response: "Tee hee, Zak!"
ReplyDeleteI wish this site had "Like" buttons for comments. I'd wear them out.
