Mary Worth 2671

I have to confess that I know even less about Hello Kitty than I do Harry Potter. Was Hello Kitty a cartoon back in the day? I really have no idea what launched this branding phenomenon. But even Wilbur Weston starts his day by reaching for his favorite cup and filling it to the brim.

  1. The Westons sound like two people who are barely acquainted its each other. They could be strangers waiting for a bus. And Wilbur was an advice columnist - yikes! Of course, the person he dumped Ask Wendy on is no prize in that category either.

I fear we're going to be stuck with the Wimpy Westons all week with nary a hint of potentially R-rated activities by Iris and Zak. Zzzzzzzzzz....

  2. That should be "with each other." Mr. KitKat's iPad is balky this morning - guess I'll have to give it some Ovaltine in a Hello Kitty mug.

  3. Next Wilbur is going to eat Lucky Charms out of his KISS cereal bowl with his Spider-Man spoon.

  4. Today's Boldface Haiku is titled

"If That Hello Kitty Mug Isn't A Perfect Metaphor For Wilbur And Dawn, Then I Don't Know What Is".

    Wonderful! Disappointing.
    You? School? Summer?
    Great! Your. Disappointing!

  5. @Nance, finding and including that link was genius - huzzah! Mary may channel that part for some future victim who's addled enough to ask her for advice (Dawn for instance): "It's part of who you are, and you shouldn't change for anybody."

  6. Like you Wanders, I know nothing about Hello Kitty (or Harry Potter for that matter. The mister reads those books and watches those films. I refuse to watch and he thinks I'm a heathen because I know nothing about Game of Thrones and refuse to watch it as well.)

Anyway, I agree with KitKat that these two losers act like two strangers that are cohabitating with each other. Two losers who are exactly alike when it comes to the opposite sex.

Is KM getting some monetary compensation from the people who make Hello Kitty? What reason would Wilbur have to have this mug.

I can imagine Fabiana and Cousin Pedro sitting around on the beaches of Bogota laughing at him.

Fabiana: "At least I got an expensive ring off that stupid gringo"

Cousin Pedro: "Si, Fabiana. I knew he was a loser when you told me about his Hello Kitty mug and what he looked like in a speedo."

Fabiana: "Please. Do not remind me. I just had breakfast."

  7. Not a cartoon back in the day, as far as I know, but a merchandising thing to be sure. Sitting on my desk is an old Hello Kitty mug that I was given for Christmas when I was 10, back in 1980.

  8. I bet Dawn also has a Hello Kitty phone cover...

  9. Hello Kitty is pretty much one hundred per cent marketing. The Sanrio Corporation of Japan created "Kitti Chan" and her friends as a line of toys, stationery, t-shirts and so on. That's her entire backstory and function, to be 'Kawaii' and branded onto everything. That said, there have been various animated cartoon series both in Japan and domestically. But that isn't why she's famous. She's ubiquitous because she was designed to be ubiquitous. (I have friends who have it high on their bucket list to visit Sanrio Puroland theme park)

  10. All these "age gap" relationship story arcs are getting tired.

    Older Male / Younger Female:
    Wilbur / Fabiana
    Ian / Toby
    Dr. Ned / Dawn
    Harlan / Dawn

    Older Female / Younger Male
    Iris / Zak

I miss the days when characters pursued their dreams (John Dill - Cake Boss).

  11. KitKat - don't worry. Since Zak is a millennial hipster tech dude, it's completely possible that he'll be suggesting polyamory and avocado toast (two defining characteristics of a lot of millennial hipsters) to Iris. R rated shenanigans can still happen!!!

  12. Now that I think about it, it does seem strange that Wilbur and Dawn apparently had no contact with each other during the months of Wilbur's travels. It seems that with e-mail, satphones, and everything, they could have at least checked up on each other once in a while, especially in light of their mutual propensity to disaster and misfortune.

  13. And lest someone be confused, Hello Kitty is a little girl, not a cat as the name would imply. The Sanrio people get very upset if you think/speak otherwise.

  14. @KitKat--Thank you. Most Hello Kitty devotees that I am marginally aware of are...well...anyway, thank you.
