Is Jannie delusional or just stupid? I can’t imagine why she’s even enrolled in school, unless it’s part of a court-mandated intervention program. Maybe her parents are making her go, or they’ll kick her out of the house. I can usually understand the motivation of KM’s “bad” people (Esme, Fabiana, Ted “what a character” Miller, etc.), but Jannie’s behavior is totally bizarre.
Notice how Professor Chinbeard appears to be smiling? He's thinking, "Aye, this is a bonny lass with lots o' spirit! Maybe we can share a wee dram and get to know each other better!"
Wow, didn't see all this vitriol coming!!!! I love how Jannie's saying what we've all been thinking. If only Fabiana and Entertainer Esme were this firey!! Now if she would call him a pompous bore, I'll be squealing with delight.
I predict Ian will be sitting on the cliff, bottle of scotch in hand, singing "Auld Lang Syne" in Scots pronunciation ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auld_Lang_Syne)
Mary will come by, talk him off the cliff and convince him to sing it in a karaoke bar.
@Mrvy6:58 pm yesterday. I disagree. It has been my experience that academically gifted college professors are absolutely, totally and utterly lacking in common sense. They live in an impenetrable bubble. Ask me for examples.
@An Impartial Observer at 1:04 pm, no doubt you could give many examples of professors as lacking in people-smarts and common sense as Ian. Stereotypes usually have some basis in fact. But I'd say that, lo decades ago, the number of my college profs who were down to earth and had common sense outnumbered those who didn't.
Even my professors who did seem clueless about life had a leg up on Ian, though. I sincerely hope that Mona Lisa smile means he's starting to understand the nefarious ways of Jannie.
Some professors are socially awkward, but I don't know of any who would put up with a student having a ridiculous and bizarre temper tantrum over not receiving a passing grade on work they didn't hand in.
Jannie is a foul-mouthed, nasty person, but her vocabulary (apart from "&%$!S") shows promise, what with "disdain," "derision," and "exasperation." Maybe Ian could consider changing her grade from an F to a D-.
Awwww, poor Ian, with his hurt puppy eyes, and about to be trembling lip. I almost feel sorry for him. For the first time in his less than distinguished academic career, he was basking in the admiration of a student, only to find that it was all a pile of &%$!S.
As a septuagenarian, I find this ageism offensive, especially because, despite his white hair and beard, Ian doesn't appear to be much older than Tom Brady (or maybe Kenny Rogers, circa "The Gambler"). Anyway, I think KitKat is on the right track, and from the look on Ian's face, he'll probably capitulate and say "All right already, I'll give you a D."
I'm bitterly disappointed in Jannie. I had high hopes for her as a bad girl but she has turned out to be nothing more than a delusional potty-mouthed child. She will have to up her game if she wants to make it to the big leagues with Fabiana and Entertainer Esme.
Comon Ian, grow a pair and tell this fresh mouth brat to get out of your office and preferably out of the school. But knowing how KM writes, we’re going to be subjected to weeks of Ian quietly moping into his fish fry, with neither him or Toby saying boo to each other
Jannie is way outside of Fabiana's league. Fabiana got Wilbur to buy her all sorts of stuff and all Jannie has done is act like a toddler having a tantrum.
I wonder how long this tirade will last? Will Sunday's strip just be Jannie berating Ian because he actually did his job properly? I guess Ian is desensitized to being yelled at by people?
Perhaps Ian will snap and straight up murder Jannie? Ian and Toby bond over the cover-up and realize the fear of getting caught has added much needed spice to their relationship.
Honest question here. Would it have been that difficult for Moy to have Jannie submitting lazy, half hearted and incompetent work and then expecting a passing grade?
@Tim at 10:53 AM. It wouldn’t have been difficult, but I don’t think it even occurred to Moy. She doesn’t dig deep for plot lines or motivation. She seems to have a vague idea floating in her head about #MeToo, but she fluffed it with Ted “what a character” Miller. I don’t hold out much hope that this is her attempt at the flip side.
Okay, game over. Jannie has exceeded my wildest dreams and called him “”a pompous old windbag”, something we have been saying for years. The only thing that would make this even better was if she said as she was stomping out of the room “And why don’t you cut your hair, shave off that ridiculous beard and lose forty pounds, fatso!”
@Tim, I find myself thinking the same thing. I simply can't imagine someone thinking they could get away with a wink instead of turning in homework. My guess is Moy wanted to make it more clear-cut. She could have shown Ian reading Jannie's paper and thinking, "Ach, this is bunk," but that would have been less obvious or straightforward, maybe? And would have taken up time that could be used for Jannie's tirade. None of it makes sense--Jannie's behavior, the fact that Ian is so naive after all these years of teaching, the fact that he hasn't told her she needs to leave his office if she can't stop yelling at home. I just have to keep telling myself, "It's the Worthiverse. It's only the Worthiverse."
@KitKat, I thought it was weird she was thinking some of those lines.
In other news, auto fill on my phone is now suggesting "Worthiverse" as an option. :)
I hope this just doesn't cut straight to Ian whining to Mary or something. I want to see how Ian deals with this, besides stupidly asking how she can call him inspiring and then not hand anything in. It should be pretty clear that she was just sucking up and wasn't at all sincere.
Don't be shy! I'd love to hear what you have to say about Mary Worth. Just keep it clean, that's all I ask. This is a FAMILY FRIENDLY blog. I don't want to moderate comments, but I will if I have to.
Is it too late for Jannie to drop this class because otherwise I'm not too sure what her end game is here...
ReplyDeleteIan, you can recycle the comeback from my days of kid hood: “I know you are, but what am I?”
ReplyDeleteIf Jannie’s incensed now, just wait till she runs into Michael beaming at his Big Assignment paper that’s sporting a gold foil star.

ReplyDeleteFauxprof, I think the answer to your question is "yes."

Silly old man!
Dinosaur never...
Else!
Unfortunately, this tirade will make Ian an emotional wreck. Any other Professor would tell the student to take a hike.

P.S. Wanders, you're hilarious!
What is wrong with this girl? Spoiled much?
ReplyDeleteIf Ian doesn't firmly tell her to leave, then he really needs to grow a spine and a brain.

ReplyDeleteWell Toby kinda treats him like Jannie, so maybe it is a smile?

Does"&%$!S" translate to "poops"?

ReplyDeleteJeez, this over-the-top tirade is still going on. I don't suppose anyone has ever accused Moy of subtlety.

ReplyDeleteMaybe this "plot" will be about what turned Jannie into such a mean person. There has to be some backstory!

ReplyDeleteHey, there's a new post on the official MW website! It explains all about why Jannie is behaving like she is. ... Well, maybe not exactly ...
