So much is revealed about Mary and Jeff's relationship as they gossip about Wilbur and Estelle. Mary wants an adventurous eater. Jeff feels stagnant. Their one hope is that Estelle and Wilbur are ready for something new and will break up, thus confirming the value of their own dull, listless, yet committed relationship.
Full and listless: just how Jeff likes his restaurants and his ladies.
ReplyDeleteWhile Jeff chugs his beer straight from the bottle, Mary delicately sips Glucerna from a wineglass. She has ordered an adventurous Kelk and Kale Quiche, while Jeff will opt for fish and chips, but with lemon instead of malt vinegar. Or perhaps that’s the malt vinegar he’s drinking. Anyway, they’re not stagnating. One deadly dull couple spending a week discussing another deadly dull (possible) couple isn’t stagnation. It’s more like putrefaction.
ReplyDeleteAaah, that was supposed to be “dull,” not “full”! The latter makes no sense, and maybe it had vaguely family-unfriendly connotations to boot.
ReplyDeleteSo, what would they serve at The Bum Boat that would qualify as adventurous? Raw oysters maybe?
ReplyDeleteI stand second to none in my affinity for eating a dozen or two raw, but I think I would take a pass at a place called The Bum Boat, especially given the literalness with which Santa Royale eateries are often named.
Mary, a human being might respond "I remember it, too!" instead of reminding her dinner date how she meddled him into trying ghost peppers (nice secret message!). Ugh. What a dreadful creature.
ReplyDeleteTuesday
ReplyDeleteMary and Jeff get all their exercise jumping to conclusions. I hope Estelle and Wilbur’s lunch “date” was a flop and they each seek greener pastures with SeniorDatersPremium.com. Drown in your smugness, Mary and Jeff!
Tuesday: Why do Jeff and Mary keep reminding us that Wilbur met Estelle on a dating site. Enough already! It's only been mentioned by these two vapid people 100 times in the past week. I thought they had a lot of "catching up to do". Isn't there anything else for them to discuss besides someone dating another person? Dr. Jeff has two kids that we haven't seen in YEARS. You would think he'd discuss what they've been doing for the past couple of years instead of two very uninteresting people.
ReplyDeleteNow I understand why Jeff is with Mary. He's just a smug and boring as she is.
I'm starting to positively loathe Mary. This conversation has made it clear what a deeply unlikable person she is. I also issue with Mary being proud of Estelle. I find that condescending in the extreme. She's not Estelle's mother, or big sister or even her life coach. In short, get stuffed Mary.
ReplyDeleteAnother guffaw-worthy morning here in the Worthiverse! Hurray, everyone! I particularly like Mary and Jeff's exercise method. For my part, I am imagining that the BumBoat really IS a boat, and that Mary and Jeff are, perhaps, dining at sea, a la the Nautica Queen dinner cruise, which you NE Ohioans will likely know. Only in Cleveland can we eat dinner while floating on the River That Caught Fire. Oh, sorry, that was 50 years ago. Don't want to get THAT old saw going again. In any case, as TimP mentioned, Santa Royale has a history of literally named dining establishments, so I'm sticking to my story: the BumBoat is afloat, which for some reason, makes me like it a lot more, although the life preserver's position, fastened securely to the outside of the BB makes me fear for the safety of its passengers. And don't let Wilbur show up with Estelle.. We know what happens when Wilbur eats dinner on anything floating.
ReplyDeleteA bit hypocritical aren't we Mary? "People become stagnant unless they are willing to explore"? Your idea of a date with Jeff is to take a boat ride and then eat at the Bum Boat. At this point, you should have eaten everything on the menu at least 25 times! So what new are you exploring? White wine instead of red? No bread with dinner?

ReplyDeleteWe're stuck in a recap loop. It's like two weeks of mini-Sunday strips.
Appearing all next week, Toby tells Ian all about the new romance!

P.S. Good Mr. Wanders, you're probably way ahead of me on this, but here goes. I didn't fully appreciate it at the time, but now I can't stop thinking about the Giant Looming Cheeseburger. I believe it deserves some consideration for Panel of the Year. It probably wouldn't win (it's no Muffin Head), but it is worthy of our respect.
@Scottie McW., there's still hope for a Giant Looming Cheeseburger balancing on Wilbur's head. We have more than six months left!

ReplyDelete@KitKat
The Giant Looming Cheeseburger reminds me of the huge flying saucer hovering over the White House in "Independence Day." Maybe it will follow Wilbur around. Maybe, in a stunning turn of events, it will eat Wilbur.
Moy, we need more than a cameo for this magnificent entity.

WHAY ARE THEY STILL TALKING ABOUT WILBUR AND ESTELLE?
ReplyDeleteOMG, I was gone for a week, I come back, and this is STILL going on. Has Moy not decided what exciting new tale she wants to explore next? I wonder if the people at the neighboring tables have run from the restaurant, or possibly hurled themselves out the windows, desperately trying to escape the boredom that is this conversation.
