I'll paint my host family's house?? What is he, some sort of super French house painter?? What an idiot... unless, of course, he intends to paint it like this:

  1. If only Hugo would paint the house that way! I am actually taking French. I showed my teacher Wednesday's comic and asked if how Hugo spoke was accurate and he just laughed. Hugo is staying for the summer to paint his host family's house? So what is the story line? Hugo actually paints the house like Wanders' picture? Or, is it more sinister? His host family will not give him his passport back until he paints the house? Or, is this a Huckleberry Finn thing and Hugo will trick Dawn into spending her summer painting the house for him while he hangs out with other women charming them with his French? The possibilities are endless.

  2. Today's Boldface Haiku is titled

"Je Suis Fatigue Of This 'Meet Cute' Already".

    Today thank!
    Nice.
    Ah, J'ai faim! Lunch?
    Sure!

  3. toutes nos félicitations, Wanders. You've outdone yourself today!

  4. Laugh-out-loud comments by everyone today! You found the ideal photo, Wanders. @MDMaryTed, I love the Huck Finn analogy - I’m picturing Dawn white-washing a house as Hugo lounges. @Nance, you’ve come up with another apt BFH title.

Since KM never passes on timeworn cliches, maybe Hugo means he’ll pull out his paints, easel, and canvas for a tacky oil painting of Chez Host Family. He IS French, right? And he will wear a beret, of course...

  5. As a Mainer of French Canadian decent, may I offer Moy some pointers in franglais?
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franglais

She needs to inject some nice Franco-American colloquialisms, like "Trow me down the stairs my coat!" and "I put them side by each."

  6. I spent many years working for a community newspaper in an area with a number of French Canadian towns. I heard many examples of franglais.
One man, after his snowmobile was stolen said "dere she was, gone."
Another man, placed a want add, in an effort to sell a machinery shed. It ended up being posted as a missionary shed. (Listen for the French accent.)

  7. Actually, I seem to recall Hugo saying he was staying a month to help out his host family, not the whole summer. Unless he is painting while doing cocaine, I can't imagine one person painting an entire house in a month. My husband and I painted our house twice, and I can say with certainty that it took more than a month (allowing for time to squabble about who was doing more work, of course). Maybe he isn't going to scrape first, which means he is making MORE work for his host family down the line when it starts peeling. Dawn will be hornswoggled (no, that is NOT French) into helping Hugo, which will likely result in the aforementioned squabbling and work slowdown. I can't wait! At least Dawn may end up with SOME marketable skill out of this summer.

  8. Tom Sawyer; not Huck Finn...

  10. Any of the Mainers in the Worthverse might know the pink house in Saco Maine. I lived there for one hellish month. The landlord is a horror show, plus I got bedbugs from that dirty, disgusting place. The landlord was a friend of my husband and I still heap hate on him for putting me in that disgusting situation. Maybe that's the house that Hugo is painting. (Watch out for the bedbugs!)

Anyway, I never heard of an international student painting someone's house. Perhaps we are misunderstanding him since he speaks a weird mixture of franglais. I think he means he is going to paint their picture in their house.

I would love for Hugo to trick her into painting the house a la Tom Sawyer, but Hélas, la KM n'est pas si créative.

  11. My bad! It was Tom Sawyer, not Huck Finn. Getting it wrong, I totally fit in KM's world!

  12. Maybe Hugo will paint Dawn like one of his French girls.

  13. Franco Ca[fe], hmm? Instead of a giant cheeseburger, perhaps a giant escargot will balance on Dawn’s head.

(From yesterday: I knew it was Tom but typed Huck - argh!)

  14. Dawn and Hugo will be surprised this is the Francisco Franco Cafe. They serve surplus MREs from the Spanish Civil War and all complaints are met with strict discipline.

  15. Love the Franco reference! A real niche cafe..

  16. This story is already causing my blood pressure to rise, and so I say, once again, Dawn, go away you're no good for me.

p.s. What the heck is with ReCapcha? It put me through at least a dozen tests this a.m. Cars, buses, traffic lights, stairs, etc. After a while you start to doubt your own powers of observation. I think it was easier getting the top secret security clearance I once had.

  18. Sunday
This is how Hugo and Dawn are celebrating Bastille Day? I’m surprised they didn’t order the Franco-American Spaghetti. That whirring sound you hear is Julia Child spinning in her grave.

Hugo’s English seems to be about 4th-grade level. Once he gets back to France, he’ll need a remedial course. Hanging around with Dawn will make his command of English deteriorate even more.

  19. Sunday:
"Time will tell" when Hugo finishes his house painting and returns to France? Doesn't he have a visa? Or a return ticket back home?
