Mary Worth 3196

Always serve your kelk cake from the cool end of the pan.

Yesterday, my cell phone served up an ad for an app and I was able to capture this screenshot:

I took it as a sign. I’ve added Carrie Underwood to the Charterstone Jukebox. Congratulations, Carrie.

  1. How long until this flips, and we get "Love Bites" by Def Leppard on the ol' Jukebox?

  2. Mary is SO modern! Surprised she didn't warn Dawn about the dangers of "videochat" with a loved one, a la Estelle's experience with Arthu/er. Hugo is about 6,000 miles from Santa Royale after all and strikes me as a candidate for a good scam. Got to keep the illusion going for Dawn for this week at least. Ho hum.

  3. Bet the ol'Jukebox in the bar where Hugo hangs out has CSNY's "Love the One You're With"

  4. It's all a spy caper. Hugo will enlist Dawn to steal Mary's famous muffin recipes. He will set up shop in Paris, where the baked goods are better than in America, but Mary's muffins take the cake.

  5. Mary: Yes, nowadays you young people have Snapface and InstaChat.

    Dawn: And sexting!

    Mary: [*GASP!* *CHOKE!*]

  6. I saw today's strip and was wondering why Mary was using a each shovel to get her Kelk Kasserole out of the pan.

How long is this babbling about Hugo and long distance relationships going to go on? I bet tomorrow Mary will be gossiping about it with Toby for the next two weeks.

  7. ARRGH I mean *Beach shovel. I type too fast.

  8. Moy demonstrated her internet hipness by teaching her readers about "catfishing" and scamming with Estelle and Arthur. Now that Hugo has spent the night with Dawn and headed back to his beloved France, Moy will show us that she is in the know about "ghosting". Can't wait......

  9. Is “will you still love me tomorrow” already on the juke box?

  10. Dawn, you didn’t do your best to make your best effort with your hair. Still using scissors to trim it, hmm?

Mary’s supremely qualified to give relationship advice. She and Dr. Jeff get together every six months for a sunset cruise and dinner at the Bum Boat, so expect Dawn and Hugo to Skype every six months and eat pizza together. Of course, Hugo’s pizza will be much better.

  13. Or maybe the jukebox should include "La donna รจ mobile" from Rigoletto: an exquisitely beautiful aria about the fickleness and inconstancy of women, sung by a sexy tenor who seduces and dumps at least three women in the course of the opera, and is working on his fourth when the curtain comes down. Do you suppose Dawn is willing to let herself be assassinated in order to save Hugo's life? The original story that Rigoletto was based on was by none other than Victor Hugo.

  14. Mary's dialogue in panel two pretty much indicates she believes that she is letting Dawn know about this stuff for the first time...

  15. @Jana C.H. at 3:38 p.m., I would love to see Wilbur receive a big sack, open the sack expecting to see Hugo's body but finding Dawn instead, blubber a Weston father-daughter duet, and then belt, "Ah, curses!" as Dawn expires. Bravo, bravo!

  16. KitKat: Let me know when it's at the karaoke bar. I don't want to miss it. I think I'll pass on the rehearsals, though, since they will be taking place in the shower.

  17. WEDNESDAY

In light of my continuing fascination with strange and somewhat unidentifiable food in Mary Worth, I notice that the thing seems to have thin layers...soooo...a very flat, brown lasagna? Something made with phyllo dough? A baklava tray-bake? She used baking parchment for some reason and forgot to take it out?

  18. Perhaps JB has at last registered M Wanders' muffin fatigue and has tasked Mary to come up with a new delicacy. The mystery is all part of the fun! As fauxprof points out, the range of foods that are flat and an odd, brown color (whole wheat lasagna?) is pretty limited. Mary herself looks a bit skeptical, in that "can I get this baked good out of the pan without it crumbling and spilling on the floor?" way that I recognize from every nervous pie baker I know..

  19. Wanders - can we add "Long Distance Runaround" by Yes to the juke box?

  20. I though she was serving pancakes. If it's supposed to be the thing that was in the pan, I have no idea what it is. Also, why does she hold spatulas so awkwardly?

  21. Wanders and all, our friend Josh at Comics Curmudgeon (joshreads.com) has informed us that there are Mary Worth shirts at the King Features Mary Worth (?!) store. Two of the best are "Aldo Kelrast must be stopped" and "Mary's Muffins-they're Worth it" and the best "What would Mary Worth do?" I don't know if Moy has been trolling us and came up with these shirts or King Features has a warped sense of humor like we do. I personally am holding out for a Wilbur obn the "thinkin' and drinkin" cliff shirt.

Anyway, on to today's strip. I too was trying to figure out what Mary made.Lasagna with beef gravy? Flapjack lasagna? Whatever it is, I would have passed on it, telling Mary I'm trying to watch my weight. But Dawn is her father's child and hasn't met a dish of food she didn't like, even if defies logic as to what it is.

As for today's conversation: why does KM feel the need to rehash what we have read over and over in different ways? We get it. Dawn was ran the gamut of emotions from A to B (thank you, Dorothy Parker!). and now she's happy that her and Monsieur Beaucaire have decided to be in a long distance relationship. We get it KM, stop rehashing it and go on to something else. The only thing that would spark my interest is if Dawn recreates the last scene from La Boheme.

Next up: Mary will spend a week gossiping with Toby and repeating everything we've heard for the past week, only in different sentences.

  22. Hey Dawn, go ask Iris how doing long distance worked out for her.
