Mary Worth 3824

Also, Royal Cruise Lines... Don't foget they didn't notify anyone, either. People Magazine is pretty upset about it, too. They live for this kind of thing. And I'm sure the TSA was more than happy to admit a man into the country without a visa or passport. Don't foget to be upset with the TSA.

  1. Re today’s secret message, I thought exactly the same thing, Wanders. It would be a hoot if Estelle finally confronted Mary regarding her urging Estelle to ONCE AGAIN take Wilbur back. I bet a bottle or two of wine could help move things along. Dawn’s about 37 by now, so she can join in.

I wonder if KM instructed JB to name the restaurant Elaine’s, or if June came up with that. Is this a homage to the past NYC iconic Elaine’s? It also occurred to me that having these three women at a restaurant with this name might be a tribute to the legendary late Elaine Stritch and her unforgettable version of “The Ladies Who Lunch.” Then I remembered that this is KM we’re dealing with, in the Worthiverse, so forget any Sondheim allusions.

  2. "But Mary," says George Plimpton. "I thought you said Wilbur was a good person."
"That's right," adds Woody Allen. "And I believe you also called him a diamond in the rough."
"And yet," points out Sally Quinn," Here you are admitting he is an inconsiderate buffoon."
"Would you ladies care for another round?" asks Elaine Stritch.

  3. Royal Cruise Lines already had Wilbur on the "embarrassing incident, cover this up" list. And Resort Island were so glad they could get him to leave that they wanted to forget the whole business as quickly as possible.

  4. I am trying to imagine the conversation among the "Ladies" as they headed out the door, leaving Wilbur behind. Estelle: Come on, girls. I'm going to need one of Elaine's Bloody Marys to process this! Dawn: Can I tag along? Mary: Of course, dear. And Estelle, I hope your 'Bloody Mary' comment wasn't a back door swipe at me. Underneath it all, I've ALWAYS known that Wilbur is a cad. Estelle: Stuff it, old woman. You've propped up that bozo for the last time.

  5. This goes beyond inconsiderate into outright sociopathic territory. It's quite cruel to purposely let your daughter think you are dead when you aren't.

How did he stay on that island for a week anyway? It was tiny and couldn't have had a hotel or anything. Did he just sleep on the beach?

  6. Wilbur goes to Mary’s to pick up his fish. ‘Here ya’ go, Wilbur, Floaty and Grotty.’ ‘But, Mary, they’re dead! Why didn’t you tell me?’ ‘I wanted to SURPRISE you!’

  7. Pretend you're one of the other guests staying on this private island. Some fool wanders in through the jungle with his clothing torn to shreds and wearing only one shoe. You don't suggest that he might want to let his family know that he's alright? When he tells you that he plans on staying on the island, letting them think that he's dead because he wants to surprise them, you laugh uproariously, pat him on the back and agree that's a great idea? Right...

  9. Thank you again for this forum, Wanders. I think today's strip reminded all of us that MW readers are in frequent need of a safe space to angrily convene.

While with Mary and Stell I can believe Wilbur would be that inconsiderate; as other commenters have pointed out, pulling off this bizarre weeklong incognito island stunt would involve a monumental amount of carefully coordinated fluster from scores of dedicated travel professionals and bystanders.

The only explanation I can come up with is that Estelle and Wilbur were actually booked on a rival carrier, Regicide Cruise Lines, and Wilbur conspired with Royale middle management to "surprise" Estelle and prolong Captain Oscar's fruitless search. That or Wilbur murdered a similarly-shaped resort guest to assume his identity and steal his XXL khakis and bar pass. Now there's a plot twist..

  10. "Angrily convene" is my new favorite phrase.

  11. Like so many commentators here, I want to try to make sense of all this. But I just can't. There are too many inconsistencies.

Meanwhile, I notice over on ComicsKingdom there are upwards of 200 comments a day on Mary Worth, which is way more than the strip usually gets. So, that means people are reading the strip which would be success for Moy, right?

    Now I'm even more depressed.

  12. On TSA, they let him into the country with one shoe! Although, as I think about it, that would speed the x-ray proccess a little.

  13. The only explanation that makes sense is this was a Waystar Royco cruise and Wilbur was "no real person". (I really hope you all watch Succession!)

  14. I have a theory that Brigman and Moy are as tired of Wilbur as we are and are trying to remove him from the Worthverse. In fact, they probably thought about having him drown but didn't have the courage to follow through, hence the bizarre survival story.
So Wilbur has made himself thoroughly noxious to all of Charterstone. Now Mary will muffin and platitude him into starting a new life elsewhere.
Soon his apartment will be occupied by a young single father and his little girl and the circle of life will roll on.

  15. Mary turns out to be a person of weak conviction. One day she is declaring that she believes Wilbur CAN be so insensitive as to ignore the implications of not informing worried friends and relatives that he has survived falling overboard a cruise ship in favor of "surprising" them with his appearance, and the next she is saying "We'll get over the other stuff." as if he's just lovably absentminded. It occurs to me Mary should run for office..

  16. LouiseF, I think it's worse than weak conviction. Mary is already working on Estelle to keep the drama going. Can't meddle without drama.

  17. Tim,
That is an interesting observation. I taught an English class a few years ago. The students wrote a fiction story as part of a unit. One student was so angry at one of his characters he said, "I can't wait until he is dead." Maybe you are on to something.

  18. Dawn is just like dear old dad, stuffing her face with a burger. I assume her summer job (was it in Phoenix?) is long ago, so is she back at Santa Royale Community College University for her twelfth year? Is Jared still in the picture?

This table of lunching ladies would be much improved by the addition of Toby and “another vodka stinger!” She’d give Estelle more colorful advice than the usual waffling by Mary.

  19. Tuesday: Here we go again. Estelle is fed up and Mary's going to try to convince her to give Wilbur yet another chance.

  20. Anyone.... name one enduring feature of Wilbur, or nice thing he has done for somone else.
Ahh, I see no hands raised... just as I thought.
