Mary Worth 3836

Awww, Brenda drew her teacher. What a great student. Unless the assignment was to draw someone who inspires you. Then she's just a kiss up.

I'm actually looking forward to these classroom scenes. Since they are probably inspired by June Brigman's real life experience as a college level art instructor, they should be full of nuanced story telling. Of course, the students are based on real people, so it could be humiliating for her real life students, which I am also looking forward to.

  1. Whew... That was a close one. It appears that we needn't have worried about one of Toby's students hitting on her after all. It's obvious that her art classes are for the children who have been dropped off at the college's day care center.

  2. Oh Wanders, you are in big trouble if Nance sees you using apostrophes to form plurals (student's).

  6. And speaking of grammar, "When Toby and her students look at each other's drawings..." implies that Toby will be showing her own drawing to the students as well as looking at theirs. Can't wait for that. Meanwhile, I hope Mr. Man Bun gets some praise for the excellent lines in his Spiderman drawing.

  7. "This is very nice, Brenda. Good use of the brush."

"Thanks, Ms. Cameron. I was afraid that the blue dye would cause the rest of my hair to fall out, but I brushed the top very gently and it's still there."

  8. Wanders, if you’re looking for nuanced storytelling, there’s nothing to see in Mary Worth.

At least Brenda doesn’t call Toby “professor.”

Goodness gracious, could Toby be hitting on Cal? [KitKat clutches pearls]

  9. Cal: "Sorry, Mrs. Cameron. No interest in an affair with you. I'm a loner, Toby. A rebel."

  10. Brenda isn't necessarily sucking up. If you want to draw real people from life (which I like to do), you have to draw the people around you. In Brenda's case that means her teacher and her fellow students.
On the other hand, Brenda may have picked up on Toby's concern about getting older, and is sucking up by drawing her in manga/anime style, in which everyone (including Ian, if Brenda ever saw him) looks like a twelve-year-old girl. Personally I prefer drawing old people because their faces are more interesting. The young and pretty are booooring!

  11. I just keep wondering what color the short part of Brenda's hair is supposed to be.

  12. Toby likes Cal's drawing (painting?) because it's a good rendering of Ian in his astroturf sportcoat.

  13. In the second panel I love how Toby insinuates that Cal plagiarized his drawing.

  14. Toby, that is clearly a blatant Sailor Moon ripoff. It's time to launch some hilariously expensive cartoon trademark litigation like in Rex Morgan MD.

  15. And Toby, I didn't appreciate your comment about Cal's "excellent lines", while your heavy-lidded gaze wanders off the page and lingers on his cargo pants. This conversation is veering perilously close to Wanders' earlier prediction that can only lead to another ruinous double date with Iris and Zak.

  16. us oldster MW readers will recall the storyline when Toby was being "tempted" by another artist. That was prior to the intro of the blue pill for the Profesor.

  17. Wait! Are drawings done with a brush? Huh?

  18. Toby must be into vintage clothing. I recognize that top. I think I dropped it off at the Salvation Army back in 1972.

  19. Brenda? There are no Brendas with blue hair and shaved heads.

The Triumphant Return of Wilbur Weston

    Part 3…

Imagine my joy and surprise when I discovered that the taxi driver was an old friend, the majordomo of stately Weston Manor, the factotum who makes my cuffs and collars crisp, my orchid plants flourish, my mahogany tables gleam- in other words, it’s Mr Allora!
“Allora, it’s grand to see you!”

“Hello, Weston, they said you drowned.”

“Not I, but how do you come to be driving this vehicle?”

“Worth fired me when you went missing. Said there was no money to pay me, and that the residents could take care of the maintenance themselves. Ha! Toby Cameron mows the grass while wearing a bikini, but only the grass in

“Well, Allora, drive me home via Restaurant Row, so I can see how business is going during my absence…
Bum Boat..home of succulent salmon, thriving, Mikes Sandwich Shoppe, lines out the door for their fabulous, mayonnaise-soaked sarneys, Giant Burger, beating MacDonalds in all categories, Santa Royale Likker Mart, where you can always get what you want…

“There’s dear old Charterstone, how did they know I was on my way? Look at the balloons and tinsel fluttering from the balconies!”

“Thanks, Allora, I’ll have a word with Mary Worth about these changes…. See you soon. I’ll pay you for the ride later. My Gucci wallet was lost at sea.”

    “Of course it was.”

“DAD! It’s a miracle! Wilbur darling! Ach, mon, we hae giv’n up hope! Woof! Meow!

What happened? Where were you? How did you get back here?

“Allora gave me a ride. But for the rest of the story, read I’m Alive but I Shouldn’t Be, on newsstands later this week, and watch for my appearance on the Larry King Show.”

    DA-AD! That’s it I’m done here! Oh fer Pete’s sake! I’M FORTY! GRRRRR…YOWL….

“What’ll it be, Wilbur- Bombay Sapphire, Auld Misogyny, 20-day-old Pruno?”

“Ian, I thought you’d never ask, but do you have an icy cold Tab?”
