This has to be a very meta experience for June Brigman. To have Toby evaluating her work must be both gratifying and stressful at the same time. However, I'm quite sure that one thing June has never said is, "I have a keen eye." I'm pretty sure she is more likely to say, "My eye is savvy."
I don't know if June ever said any of those things, Wanders. But I'm pretty sure she must have said to herself, "I've got 10 cats to feed. I'm gonna have to suck up this Mary Worth gig at least until I hit the lottery."

My keen eye tells me that Toby's tiny shoulders and neck could not possibly support her relatively huge head as drawn.
ReplyDelete“Savvy” is getting a workout the past couple days, Wanders. Putin and June - hmmm.
ReplyDeleteNot only is Toby an art education maven, she’s on a rhyming extravaganza. Yes, Toby, and love grows where my Rosemary goes.
Let me guess - the rest of Cal’s notebook is filled with drawings of Toby. Has his mother seen those?!
"When I see something that interests me, I draw it!"
ReplyDeleteI think we all know where this is going. In mere weeks we'll be squinting at a shyly scrawled line drawing of Toby (crow's feet tastefully removed, and perhaps with Frisbees and Netflix logos as a background).
"Why thank you Cal, your lines are excellent! And you've perfectly captured the negative space between my ears!"
So funny, everyone! A good day for a laugh...As for that silly quotation by Toby, it's from Tony Robbins, author, philanthropist, Big Talker, and possible child molester. Apparently Toby has been consulting him in an effort to build her career as an, er, artist...
ReplyDeleteI dunno, Yahoonski. Giada De Laurentiis seems to manage alright with her giant head.
ReplyDeleteFriday: Comics Curmudgeon is correct about the uncanny valley. In Cal's drawing, Toby's wide-eyed lunacy (see panel 1) is not at all evident. June has really done it today.
ReplyDelete"Playful figurines"?? I can think of a few things to describe them, but 'playful' was never even in the top 50.
ReplyDelete“Playful fun! Should I?” Go for it, Toby!
ReplyDeleteCal: I have a keen eye. Toby: I used to have a blue eye.
ReplyDeleteI don’t like where this is heading. For someone with a keen eye, capturing Toby’s uncommon mouth is only steps away from capturing her heart.
ReplyDeleteSUNDAY
ReplyDeleteCapturing Toby’s uncommon feet would really not be an easy feat.
I wonder if Cal can draw someone holding a cell phone?
ReplyDeleteWhat is an 'uncommon mouth?' I googled that term, but it came up with a page of mouth diseases. Maybe Toby has "black hairy tongue" syndrome?
ReplyDeleteShe really should be more creeped out by the fact that a student drew a picture of her.
And WHO would describe their own mouth as "uncommon"?! Watch it, Cal. You don't want to have to thumb wrestle Ian for her...
ReplyDeleteCal: It wasn't that hard to draw your skinny lips, Ms. Cameron. We raise chickens out in our back yard.

I do life-sketches of people at public events, but I don't think I've ever seen an uncommon mouth. I've seen some really magnificent noses, but mouths are just mouths.
