Mary Worth 1,504

After driving a day, a night, and a day (panel 1), Jeff and Mary continue to discuss her involvement with John Dill. And in so doing, Mary makes perhaps the boldest New Year's resolution ever. Mary Worth, meddler extraordinary, will limit herself to one good deed for the entire year. However, this being only January, she will either fail miserably or this will be one heck of a long story.

By the way, thanks everybody for your fun feedback on the Worthy Awards. And thanks also to those of you who threw a few donations into the tip jar. As for those who felt cheated by Chin Napkin's loss, I can only say that we have such high expectations for Chin Napkin, and this year he just didn't measure up. But please don't boycott the sponsors. In fact, please patronize the sponsors as much as possible. The Worthy Awards are expensive! So much gold painted plastic on those loving cups.

  1. Jeff claims he's not upset, but he's driving on the wrongside of the road.

  2. Don't worry: I'll still let you feed my cake hole at the Bum Boat whenever you feel the need. Whenever you tear yourself away from the teevee and realize what a hidden hottie I really am. Oh, just watch me get frosting... all... over... myself.

But don't worry; nothing will change for us! (tee hee)

  3. "your friend the cake baker"
Oh, feel the burn! Feel the condescension, the utter contempt, the growth of confidence now that he realizes John Dill is inferior to him. Wow.

Dr. Jeff has some issues. But we already knew that since he's unable to shake his addiction to a woman that frustrates his desire for a normal relationship. Calling Dr. Drew...Dr. Phil.

  4. "One good deed..." ONE? Or perhaps she means one extraordinary effort over and above her normal meddling ethos. I mean, advising Dawn and Toby is her natural state, and "Ask Wendy" is more of a job than a good deed.

Still, I think Dr. Jeff is going to be complicating this "good deed" quite a bit.

  5. I don't think it's January in Santa Royale. A rift in the space-time continuum put the Worthiverse outside of our time. Remember John Dill's "holiday" cake? The decoration and design of that cake related to no holiday any of us recognize, and no one in the strip wished anyone "Happy Hanukkah," "Merry Christmas," "Happy New Year," "Happy Kwanzaa" (oops, there are no African-Americans in Santa Royale). So, when Mary says "This little project of mine is my good deed for the year!" she does not mean 2013, she means something like "Mary Worth Date 3287." Maybe she could announce the date ala Captain Kirk's "Star Date ___" for the captain's log.

  6. At some point during the long night's drive, while Mary was pondering her next utterance, somebody seems to have made off with the entire passenger side of the good doctor's car.

  7. We can't relate the passage of time in the Worthiverse to anything that resembles reality. How can we, when, for example, Mary's encounter with Emily Smith and Wayne the kidnapper at DINER lasted a full 40 days* for us? Mary's "year" may last until sometime in 2017.

    * 34 days if you don't include the Summary Sundays.

  8. Dr. Jeff is not very subtle. As Anon@8:27 said, he makes sure to remind his woman that, if she's contemplating a dalliance with Dill, he's Nothing But A Cake Baker. It's he, Jeff, who is A Doctor and World Traveller who can give her the kind of thrills and lifestyle she desires: dinners out at The Bum Boat, protracted car rides in his sporty morphing vehicle, the element of surprise with his changing hair color.

Can a Friendly Cake Baker do all of that for her? Ha ha, it is to laugh!

  9. jeff and Mary's passive aggression make them perfect for each other.

  10. Don't think that Dr. Jeff isn't angry about this. In fact, he's so angry about Mary limiting herself to only 1 good dead this year, this limiting HIS free time, that he's begun to molt from his snakeskin.

  11. Where exactly are the driving to? Is there a destination or are they going around in circles? Is this a symbol for how storylines go in circles in the Worthiverse?

  12. What are those black splotches covering their faces in Panel Two? Did Joe just take a correspondence course in Shadowing or is Dr. J driving past Three Mile Island?

  15. Two things:

1.) Sure. Go ahead. Just toss Chin Napkin under a bus like it's just an old rag or piece of paper! After all these years of loyal service! (sniff)

2.) I can't get over the Halloween color scheme inside Dr. Jeff's car... especially with a pink exterior. Perhaps the colorist won a prize by dressing up as Pepto-Bismol for Halloween. Since then, he's been reliving that glorious moment in every way possible...

Don't be shy! I'd love to hear what you have to say about Mary Worth. Just keep it clean, that's all I ask. This is a FAMILY FRIENDLY blog. I don't want to moderate comments, but I will if I have to.
