Mary Worth 2703

It's hard to use quote verbal quotation marks endquote, but it can be done. Mary is a true quote friend endquote so I'm sure it didn't sound quote sarcastic endquote at all.

  1. Today's Boldface Haiku is titled "Dawn Adds Another Entry To Her Stuff That Is Hard List".

    Status Changes hard.
    Learning Experience.
    Never.
    "Friend", dating situation?

(I notice that Mary helpfully brought along the Scoop-Your-Own Carrot Muffin Mix, in case Dawn wants to eat the batter raw.)

  2. If Dawn were truly adulting that would be a bottle of Jack Daniel's on the coffee table, not a carton of Ben & Jerry's ice cream.

  3. Yeah, those status changes are a bear.

  4. "Status changes" joins "review past interactions" in the MW lexicon of awkward phrases never heard in actual human conversations.

  5. "I'll never forget it" is usually used around things like 9/11, the space shuttle disaster, or the Kennedy assassination, not the "Dawn Weston 3 dates-and-out dating disater of 2017." Let's dial it back a bit.

And we were almost out with that phrase, but Mary had to jump back in, asking about the "friend." I would "like" it if we just "jumped" to the pool "party." Now we're stuck in this morass of a "plot" until at least the weekend.

    "Ugh."

  6. Wanders, to your point about a portraying verbal quotation marks, I'm not sure what tools Karen and June have at their disposal. They seem to rely on italics for surprised or shocked exclamations. So that leaves bold, which they use....well, that is to say, bold is for, um....how is bold used, exactly?

(The answer is arbitrarily and capriciously.)

  7. To your point, fauxprof, it seems to me that any sentient being would likely at least exhibit a ?!! at the phrase "status changes", but nooooo, not Mary, who plows ahead as if Dawn had just said, "Oh, I quit early so I could do my laundry before school starts."

  8. My "friend" says it's really none of your business and I shouldn't have mentioned it to you in the first place.

  9. "Status changes made it hard to keep working there" is the gibberish you get when words are run through the Official Karen Moy Wacky Translating Device.

"I'll never forget it. Reminds me of Dave."

  10. Dawn's MySpace status has changed from hopelessly naive doormat to mopey codependent loser.
