Now don't get discouraged. See it through. I'm sure Karen Moy has written a wonderfully original and clever story, full of plot twists, humor and warmth. You don't know it yet, but this could be your favorite Mary Worth story of all time. How can you not adore a French foreign exchange student who speaks half English half French, kisses strangers' hands, and hangs out at the mall? He loves classic literature and his parents named him after the great French writer, Victor Hugo. I'm sure this story will rank right up there with The Count of Monte Cristo and Les Miserables.
Oo la la, Moy's high school French lessons are finally paying off! Perhaps Dawn and her new *ami* will study at *la bibliotheque* or enjoy a *cafe au lait* at the *bistro*. What's the French translation for Reminds me of Dave?

Wanders, I'm sure you are correct. This story promises to be the crowing achievement in the MW franchise and will no doubt cement Moy's legacy in the pantheon of the world's literary giants.

ReplyDeleteI pictured my French teacher, Sister Margaret Therese spinning in her grave with Maurice Chevalier switching back and forth from English to French. We were always told to address her in English or French, not a hybrid of both. That earned you a detention.
I also thought exchange students we in high school. As usual, KM has not done her homework. (No pun intended.)
When I saw the second panel, I thought of the Three Stooges where Curly says to a dowager "I kiss your hand, madame." and he bits the diamond off her ring. Since Dawn isn't wearing any kind of ring, she might be missing a finger.
Wanders, you have such high hopes for this intercontinental romance, but I feel that like all of KM's storylines it will end in abject failure. (Or we may get a floating hear or giant hamburger out of it.)
Dawn's idea of Classic Literature is "The New Dick and Jane".

ReplyDeleteKnowing how these story lines go, I suggest "Psycho Killer" by the Talking Heads for the Juke Box. It also features French lyrics. Nice use of French in the BFH de jour, Nance!

ReplyDeleteMaybe Hugo will meet Estelle and they will start dating! That would be a much more interesting and fun plot than what we will get I'm sure - but don't all of Dawn's romances end in disaster?
ReplyDeleteJust a few summers ago, Dawn was being wined and dined at oddly named French restaurants with Dr. Slimeball. So she’ll be completely at ease with the overly suave and continental Hugo.

A lot of newly graduated college students have serious trouble finding decent jobs. Dawn's shooting herself in the foot by doing nothing all summer - that doesn't look good on a resume. At the very least she should be taking on a volunteer position or something.
I forgot though - I don't think Dawn's ever going to graduate.

Ho hum. Another improbable plot from KM. Think we already know this will end badly for Dawn. Seems all her relationships do, providing a constant raison d'etre (How's that for flinging some French around?!) for a certain vieille dame who is given to providing unasked for advice...

I’m guessing Dawn’s Italian is non-existent too, and her English is nothing to write home about.
ReplyDeleteI worked at a university for over 20 years and found that international students usually spoke excellent English. Most of them had studied English for many years, and their vocabulary was often better than that of the American students. So, Hugo’s lack of fluency is atypical. Of course, it’s typical of KM’s bizarre relationship with the real world.
I hope hope HOPE that Hugo’s host family is the Santa Royale Clampetts.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you about international students or even anyone that English is a second language. I work with several people here where English is their second language and not only do they speak it perfectly, they don't go back and forth between languages. I have absolutely no idea what KM is trying to convey, except that she wants us to know that young Charles Boyer is French and she doesn't want us to forget it.
“I stay ..to help my host family...harvest their grow in Humboldt county.” Sounds like a summer job for Dawn.

Other than Dora, no one talks that way. NO ONE.
Great, meg! I'm guessing Hugo's host family's involvement with California's favorite cash crop could help him pay the substantial tuition that Santa Royale Community College is likely charging an out-of-state (in his case, out of country) student to attend their esteemed institution. I can't wait to see him take Dawn out to the grow fields. I can already see the distressed look on her face.
