If people ever find out about this in Santa Royale, she's going to be cast out of respectable society. Hope she hasn't gotten rid of her old sign.

I'm glad to see Napkin Dispenser is back on the table. I was worried that they wouldn't be able to wipe their invisible food from their chins. Also, is a stick of butter really the best choice for a restaurant?

Dear Old Shelly Cohen doesn't have EVERYTHING. She doesn't have a HUSBAND. This plot is about to take off. At least until you read panel 2.

Gosh it's good to have time to blog again... I had a very long week and weekend.

Assuming Shelly Cohen was a young widow of 45 when she came to the Haven, and Dr. Smith was still 16, that would place their ages at about 30 years apart. Based, on his appearance, I'm guessing that Dr. Smith is now about 55 to 60. That would make Shelly Cohen nearly 90 years old. She really is Dear Old Shelly Cohen.

Today is a historic day. Mary Worth touches her first black person. She doesn't appear to be too pleased about it either.

However, the fact that a non-white character has finally appeared in Mary Worth is momentous, and I thank Karen Moy and Joe Giella for introducing us to Dr. Milton Smith, Success Story. It almost feels like when the Red Sox broke the Curse of the Bambino. There's no going back now.

I missed you so much that I didn't write you at all, never once in the forty years I've lived in California. That's how much I missed you, you and your flattened bagels and lox.

P.S. To those of you commenting on yesterday's post, I'm not looking for disciples! Just more Citizens of Santa Royale! You can sign up here.

Mary's place is nice, but Dear Old Shelly Cohen's place is spectacular. I mean, look how she's hung her pink drapes! They don't just hang straight down -- they're GATHERED! Once Mary has spent a couple of months here, she'll never want to go back.

This will be quite a change from Santa Royale, in Southern California, where the population is 100 percent white. And Tuscon, Arizona, where the population was 100 percent white. According to Wikipedia, in 2010 the population of New York City was 44 percent white. It couldn't have changed very much in three years... could it?

The audacity, Jeff, to ask Mary to drop everything to go running off to Vietnam with you and Drew! Don't you know how busy she is? What with her rose garden, volunteer duty at the hospital and Charterstone matters? Mary's run off to New York twice before... without Jeff. Arizona... without Jeff. And now, New York again... without Jeff. Perhaps Snoopy said it best...

The anticipation is killing me. They both have news for one another. Mary's, no doubt, has something to do with Dear Old Shelly Cohen coming to visit. But, Jeff... What could Jeff's news be? We could be embarking on the greatest Mary Worth story of all time. Better than last year's Italian Vacation. Better even than the Death of Aldo Kelrast. I'm serious. This is the one we've been waiting for!

Today's strip blows my mind. This first panel especially. Mary Worth is reading Love and Other Stories of Mary Worth by Karen Moy and Joe Giella. How in the world is she gonna feel when she gets to the end of the story about her stalker Aldo Kelrast and sees him drive off the cliff? It took her literally hours to get past feeling responsible for his death, and this is going to open up old wounds for sure. She's really going to need serious therapy.

Also, the Robert Frost quote doesn't really seem to have anything to do with the rest of the strip.

O, how I have missed good ol' Shelly Cohen. I cry myself to sleep each night, I've missed her so much! Oh, Shelly Cohen, my almost Jewish-sounding friend from New York where there are lots of people named Cohen. Perhaps we can send emails back and forth to each other, over all these miles. Since we care about each other so much. Fly swiftly my email, safe journeys as you travel all these miles across the country. What adventures you'll have. Find her, find her well, find my dear old friend, Shelly Cohen, and perhaps, maybe one day, I shall hear from her again.

Rarely, but every once in a while, I'll throw in a little bit of my Mormonism. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints participate in a worldwide conference every six months. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir usually sings, and the men and women who lead the Church speak. It is broadcast worldwide. When I was a kid, I thought it was mostly boring. But as an adult, I find it mostly wonderful, so I wanted to share this information with this little group of my online friends who put a smile on my face each day. Thanks for letting me share this short video with you. You can watch conference at LDS.org

Great literature is never rushed. It takes time to carefully craft character, to render environment and unfold the layers of plot. I for one would be content if this story never got underway. Greatness. Pure greatness is often deeply buried under many, many layers and it could take years to find.

I, for one, never believed for a moment that our new story was going to be an epic tale of redemption centered around Tommy and Iris. It appears my expectations, however, will still be exceeded if this turns into an epic tale about Wilbur typing on the computer.
