Sorry I've been away, gang. I've been busy. Painting my bathroom. I can only imagine how busy Hugo is, painting his host family's entire house. I think Hugo imagines he's pretty busy, too. But his host family is starting to wonder...

Hôte père: Where is Hugo?

Hôte mère: He went to the beach.

Hôte père: It's two o'clock in the afternoon. When does that fainéant plan to finish his job? I think its time to yank his visa.

I worry that we are headed toward a Fantine situation... not that I think Dawn becomes a prostitute, but this has all the makings of an unexpected baby.

"...He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came..."

And just for fun, here's Ruthie Henshall, whom a friend invited me to dinner with back in the late 90's a few years after this recording. I met her a few times back in the day, and she was so sweet and kind to me.

Is that enough content for you? P.S. I've loved reading all your comments. Some wonderful ones the past few days.

I love a good Dawn Weston date. Holding hands across the table is really hard on the elbows; you have to really be motivated. Plus, this brings up Wilbur's work as an investigative journalist and how long he's away from home after any international tragedy. It's like he books passage on the soonest schooner and sails around the Cape to wherever it is he's going, and then spends months writing a story, before returning home having been robbed by pirates.

We knew Karen Moy was writing off her trip to France this year, but she had to throw in a reference to Milan to write off the Italy leg of her trip.

How did they get all the way to the Moon Pie restaurant, park, order, get served and then continue their conversation essentially where they left off yesterday? That must have been one heck of an awkward pause!

If she thinks she has to explain to Hugo that Guy de Maupassant is a "writer," then why does she think he will know anything about his architectural preferences. That being said, I hope Hugo begins discussing the relationship between wealth and happiness as portrayed in de Maupassant's short story, "The Necklace." Next time, rather than reading about a writer, try reading his actual writing.

The best way to demonstrate your savoir faire, Dawn, is probably not to do all you can to insult the French. Or me.

Well, well, well. Exchanging phones to enter your own number is really the most intimate meet cutes you can do. Just don't crush her phone in your massively inflated right hand. Hugo has this strange thing where he keeps transforming from a skinny Frenchman to ridiculously buffed Avenger.

In my memory, it was 50 years ago tonight that Dad carried me out to the car to drive to Grandma and Grandpa's house in Salinas where our family would watch tomorrow's Apollo 11 moon landing together. As we walked out under a beautiful night sky, Dad said "They're almost there," and I tried to spot that tiny capsule carrying Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Mike Collins on their adventure to that beautiful, bright moon! In this wonderful Google Doodle, Mike Collins recounts his experience.

As for Dawn and Hugo, we're all part of humankind, no matter what language we read Notre-Dame de Paris in (Yes, that's the original French title).

We can learn from each other - or, rather, I have taught you a valuable lesson. Now I'll have another Coca-Cola, please.

"I'm leaving and going someplace where I can get some Freedom Fries."

His 'host family' must really love this guy.

It is sad for us Americans because we have no culture. Our landmarks are all damaged. We are sad.

Oh, you Europeans, and your overt sexual advances. Even if you are just trying to recover from showing your French arrogance. Dude, you're eating a fried ham and cheese sandwich at the mall. Scale it back a bit.

I'll paint my host family's house?? What is he, some sort of super French house painter?? What an idiot... unless, of course, he intends to paint it like this:

“Je parle anglais, Dawn, je vais donc traduire tout ce que je dis pour vous.  I speak English, Dawn, so I will translate everything I say for you. “

Now don't get discouraged. See it through. I'm sure Karen Moy has written a wonderfully original and clever story, full of plot twists, humor and warmth. You don't know it yet, but this could be your favorite Mary Worth story of all time. How can you not adore a French foreign exchange student who speaks half English half French, kisses strangers' hands, and hangs out at the mall? He loves classic literature and his parents named him after the great French writer, Victor Hugo. I'm sure this story will rank right up there with The Count of Monte Cristo and Les Miserables.

“No, my mistake. I thought you were Wilbur Weston. You’re just like him.”

And there it is. Love is born with an Ow and an Oof. I'm sure this guy will be charmed by her utter lack of ambition until he dumps her this fall.

Remember two years ago when Dawn worked a summer job and ended up having an almost-affair with her married boss? I don't blame her for not wanting a summer job anymore.
