News Flash! American Idol sings Mary Worth's Favorite Song

That's right American Idol fans! Kris Allen, that swanky cool hipster whom Paula Abdul calls straight up and likable, sang Mary Worth's favorite song tonight on American Idol: Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova's "Falling Slowly." This awesome number was featured last summer as "The Ultimate Make Up Song" after Mary and Jeff went crazy coo-coo.

It all started when Jeff got jealous after Mary coyishly dumped him for a guy who wanted to beat his own brother up in a hospital parking lot, and who was later appointed to the Town Council because he was just so darn straight up and likable - like Kris Allen himself. When Mary and Jeff finally got back together, Jeff treated Mary to the "Concert of her choice." And what did Mary pick? You guessed it: that Irish/Czechoslovakian duo Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova who just happened to be touring through Santa Royale, California, after winning their Oscar. It was only one of the greatest moments in Mary Worth history! You can re-live that moment now:

I was so, so excited about this. "It's the Mary Worth song!"

That concert audience seems a bit long in the tooth, especially for some mod, hippie act with guitars.

That really was my favorite Mary Worth moment because it quite literally freaked me out and caused me to think that I was in some parallel universe where Mary Worth could display such "indie" sensibilities. (Okay, the Daniel Johnston/Jad Fair shoutouts were kind of spooky too)

My wife watched that Idol performance and she reported that of the several other people watching with her, nobody present was aware of the song, even after she said, "you know, from the movie Once?, the song that won an Oscar?" It never dawned on me that she should have also thrown in, "you know, the song that that singing duo sang in Mary Worth?"
