Birmingham has it in for Mary Worth!

A special thanks to loyal readers Brian and Nathan for letting us know that Birmingham, Alabama, is pitting Mary Worth against Judge Parker in the ultimate blood sport: "Which Comic Should We Kill?"

Judging by the comments section, Judge Parker is winning handily. We all know that Mary Worth is way more funny than Judge Parker, so if you want to help keep Birmingham's funny pages truly funny, you need to get out the vote. Tell them "Mary Worth and Me" sent you.

Odd that they call it "Mary Worth's Family" ... is that the official name of the strip? When did that happen?

Sorry, I voted for the Judge. Although based on some of the comments, many would like both comics to be in the paper. BTW, Judge Parker was cut a few weeks ago. Lots of complaints happened. So, the comic peeps at the News decided to put it to a vote.

As to when it was called "Mary Worth's Family". I think the syndicated marketed it that way back in the 60s/70s. Not too many paper's ever picked up on it. I guess they did in Birmingham.

See now, if it was Rex Morgan, I'd be really, really torn. Luckily Mary easily wins this one for me!

apologies to Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I'm just astounded by the hate for Pearls and Get Fuzzy.

You would think the syndicate would take this as a sign.

You would think they'd realize they have a brand name (Mary Worth), that took 70 irreplaceable years to build, that is in danger of disappearing.

You would think they would want to stop that from happening.

You would think they would even thank the very-much-replaceable Karen Moy for her many years of faithful service and then hire a writer who can write plots that advance faster than continental drift.

You would think that would be the most basic, obvious, fundamental thing to do.

You would think...

Anonymous: Why would you change the brand? You might as well kill the strip! This is a site for Mary Worth fans. You are clearly a Judge Parker fan. We don't come over to your blog and judge Judge Parker. Please reconsider why you are so upset. You seem to think Mary Worth could be even better than it already is, but I don't think that's likely. It is already funnier than Zits, Baby Blues and the Wizard of Id combined! I hope you'll think about what you've written and ask yourself why. Why do you feel so strongly about this? Perhaps it is simply that you see newspapers cutting the strip and you worry that one day you will wake up and not be able to find Charterstone. That the strip will be canceled entirely. Mary Worth has been meddling for 70 years. That's nearly as old as the artist himself. She isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Now sit back, chill-ax, and enjoy some peach pie.

Anonymous didn't seem at all to be a Judge Parker fan, but that's not really my point.

I think he does have a point about Karen Moy's writing. Granted, I haven't read MW under any other writer, but compared to, say, A3G, the pace of the strip is absolutely glacial. I don't think the strip would be "killed" if it wasn't written in such a manner that picked up the pace slightly. After the exposition that the Johnsons have marital problems, did we really need a full week of Mary repeating the same thing three days in a row to Tobey? (April 5-7) Things go along in that vein.

That's not even getting into the fact that we just had a pretty awful 4-month long story about Wilbur's Facebook son. If I were someone who didn't read MW and I picked up that series, I would still be a non-MW reader. It just seems like they need to look toward the future. The people in the retirement homes that keep MW going aren't going to give it up if they make the exposition a little denser.

I hate to have to choose(hell, they chose years ago,)but Judge Parker lives onthe planet of the giant breats! All his female charactors within the ages of 14-62 have gaint racks and they arch their backs to make sure you see them.I live in Dallas, where the pigs dumped Mary years ago.
