Mary Worth 1,110

I remember calling a girl for a date while I was still in high school. I had written out my script. I dialed her number a dozen times, but I hung up each time before I got to the last digit. When she canceled our date, I cried and cried. I loved her so. But now that I know that love has no fear, I must go see her. If only I knew where she lived. If only I could remember her name.

"Where there is love there can be no fear."
What??

How about fear of rejection? Fear of finding a disappointing shell of the boy from Brooklyn? How about fear of poverty because your loved one sucks as a waitress?

For Bobby Black, how about fear of ponytails? We could on and on ...

How about fear of Mary's cruel finger of fate pointing directly at you? Yes Gina, there might be a tad bit of fear. And wow, is Gina's coffee hot today! What is that, her fourth or fifth refill? Who's waiting on people here, anyway??

I fear that we will never get out of this diner.

I fear that I have melted into the Naugahyde seating already.

No, I'm back for more.

Where there is a senseless childhood crush, self imposed and creepily reinforced on someone's deathbed, swiftly forgetful and yet myopically focused, all bedraggled by a crappy ponytail, there is no sense.

Back to that Naugahyde...

I love the little tassel Moy added to the dialouge cloud--it's like Gina's own dialogue mortarboard. maybe she's graduated to adult conversation.

As for Gina spending all day sitting in the booth drinking coffee, I can only imagine the diner owner coming up to her and firing her.

"Fire me?! I don't even work here!"

(with grateful plagarism of Seinfeld..)

By December we should find the plot evolving: Bobby too joined the Witless Protection program, moving to California, changing his name, always fearing commitment due to his 1 lost love, and eventually becoming a doctor. He did have to make a few abrupt trips to Vietnam to ensure his cover wasn't blown as his handler found him inadvertently crossing paths with someone from his path as he sat at the lunch counter waiting for someone to take his order.

(Yes, this could be my cry for help that I need to get a life. I'm coming up with plotlines for a cartoon about a woman he has been 70 for the last 40 years.)

Good gosh, I think Gina needs to get her act together! You were 14 years old!

Be afraid, Gina. Be very afraid.

Way to go, Mary, telling an obsessive, love-addicted woman exactly what she wants to hear. Some "friend." I'm sure Bobby Black will thank you.

BTW, I would like to nominate a song for the Charterstone jukebox: "When Will I See You Again" by the Three Degrees.

Well, except for special occasions calling for salmon squares and hostess gifts of pie, Mary seems to live on a steady diet of coffee and platitudes. Yum, yum!

Anonymous said...

That's the dumbest platitude since "love means never having to say you're sorry." Moy just made this one up and it shows.

I’m mulling over the construction of Moy’s new platitude.

Where there is Mary there can be no table service.

Where there is Gina there can be no peace and quiet.

Where there is Wilbur there can be no sandwiches.

Hey, this is fun!

Where there is talent there can be no Moy.

Where there are waitresses like Gina there can be no service.

It seems obvious that Liza with a Z is the only Charterstone resident worthy of Gina's obsessions.

Doesn't Mary look incredibly butch in that first panel? No wonder Dr. Cory is never successful.

if love had no fear there would be a lot of happy people or a 1000 courtrooms in every state just for stalking . does moy get her plotlines from fortune cookies and old romance novels from the fiftys

So, Mary, even if Bobby's a convicted serial killer, Gina should see him once more? Is that how the whole love thing works?

Be afradi, Gina, be very afraid.

Dear Kathyo: The Condo Board has approved your nomination of "When Will I See You Again?" by the 3 Degrees. The song is beautifully arranged and sung, and reflects the emotional distress of many of our board members, especially Mr. Black, who spends most board meetings doodling seagulls and trees in his notepad.

Oh my gosh, Gina's ponytail is SO OUTRAGEOUS!! I bet it's sneaking off for a fresh cup of Brim. Fill it to the rim!

Where there is Gina, there can be no neck. Not today, anyway.

I wonder if Mary "I-have my-opinions" Worth will be leaving a generous tip?
