Mary Worth 1,613

At first I was confused by this dream sequence. And then I realized I wasn't really looking at two Beth's, but that she was actually metamorphosing into an older, more bitter version of herself. Normally, when people metamorphose in Mary Worth, it isn't deliberate.

Sadly, Beth is doomed to go into old age with the same unflattering hairstyle.

Maybe if Beth got different glasses (or even contact lenses) and an updated 'do she would age more gracefully.

I'm fascinated by those wavy blue lightning bolts. Perhaps this is Joe Giella's homage to "The Twilight Zone."

Special note to fauxprof: Thanks for your comment yesterday afternoon.

I just feel so disappointed by the way this plot is proceeding.

Elinor was feisty and hateful, then she has a heart attack and becomes wimpy and sad. Now she has a regretful dream whereby she will undoubtedly have an epiphany, i.e., "I can't let Beth turn out like me! I can't ruin her chance at happiness simply because of my own experience and selfishness!"

Now Beth and TomHarpman will get married and lovingly provide a comfy home for Elinor and never be seen again. Which, I guess, is fine because Elinor will become a boring old lady with no oomph.

I love me some floating Beth heads, no matter how old they are!

@Nance: correction-- a fake heart attack.

I'm just waiting for the ghost of Christmas future to come along. Just had a bad vision of Ian in a toga and laurel as the bacchanalian ghost of Christmas past followed by Mary's ghost of Christmas present.

Now everyone be sure to make the Wayne's world "beedle-dump, beedle-dump, beedle-dump" noises and hadnd motions as we exit the dream sequance.

@Nance: "...simply because of my own experience and selfishness!" should be "simply because of some drippy advice from Mary Worth!"

Today's strip, in combination with yesterday's, brought this to mind:

A million old soldiers will fade away
But a dream goes on forever
I'm left standing here, I've got nothing to say
All is silent within my dream

A thousand true loves will live and die
But a dream lives on forever
The days and the years will go streaking by
But the time has stopped in my dream

- from "A Dream Goes on Forever" by Todd Rundgren

I always suspected Elinore was actually Beth's father in drag, like that "lady" in Tales of the City played by Olympia Dukakis or the Lady Chablis in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. A woman on the outside but still packing a little some something in between.

Upon waking from this powerful dream, a chastened Elinor vows to always chip in for the cost of new eyewear for Beth, no matter the cost.

Uncle Joe's really showing his drawing chops here in the aging of Beth. Good work.

Oh dear God, please make it stop!

Not a single gray hair?

If, as they say, two (floating) heads are better than one, then three is epic.

Elinor's imagining Beth with incurable chin cancer! It's gotta be that -- nobody's bone structure changes that much as they age!

Vicodin give me REALLY weird dreams too!

Beth will not age well. Of course, no one ages as gracefully as Mary.

Nance said...

Sigh. I stand corrected.

@Tim. Your Vicodin comment is well made. I also get strange dreams on that drug. No blue clouds, but truly odd waking dreams, like I'm not really asleep, not really awake, but in some odd soporific limbo. I forget what that phenomenon is called, but I think the movie Vanilla Sky uses it as a plot vehicle.

"Mary Worth"...always a nightmare!

Nola had her mystic hobo, and now Elinor has a prophetic dream. Repentance is becoming contingent on somewhat spooky encounters in our Worthiverse.

wow --I guessed right --they gave elanor some medical marijuana, and now she is OD'ing.
Then maybe do an arm transplant so Dawn's friend can be made whole.

What amazes me is that they are letting Elinor sleep long enough to have a dream! In hospitals they come and take blood samples, give you a pill, or whatever, at least once an hour.

The dream sequence reminded me of those awful smashed-together Hollywood couple names like Brangelina and Bennifer: Belinor!

an unbelievable wv: gradations !! (any process or change taking place through a series of stages, by degrees, or in a gradual manner) Creepy...

Carlye

I was once awakened from a restful sleep by a nurse who asked me how well I was sleeping and if I wanted a sleeping pill. If I wasn't so incapacitated, I honestly would have socked her!

I walked my dogs this morning and on one driveway after another, there was the Cleveland Plain Dealer wrapped with the comics page and Mary Worth on the outside. Beth's morphing face all over the neighborhood--what a sight.

Vicki said...

oh, Kathyo, I am lol by your comment today! I hope your dogs are ok. (Now beware you don't have nightmares about this!!!)

Wanders, if at least one of the floating-Beth-head panels isn't a finalist for Panel of the Year, you will have some very disappointed followers!
