Hey, what happened to the store Mary was so enthusiastic about yesterday? Here we are, back in the street, for the traditional Cheap New York Scarf gift. I guess the Ken Kensington scarf came apart in the wash some time ago. (Sometimes I can't find my glasses, but I remember a plot point from two years ago...)
@fauxprof, Ken Kensington bought Mary a scarf in MW & Me episode 1752 (just a bit over two years ago - 01/03/2014). Ken's scarf was higher end - 10 bucks. Everyone should consult Wanders's archive to revisit that strip because it's hilarious. Ken looks like he's attempting to strangle Mary with the scarf, and his yellow toupe is blowin' in the wind.
Jeff bought Mary's coat from a Santa Royale street vendor. It was $21.99.
Wait a sec, where did Olive get money? She had to cadge money off Mary to give Faithless. Now we find out that she had money all the time? And enough to give another guy on the street? I hope she realizes that Mary's probably living off her late husband's Social Security.
Seems like Olive could use a little financial advice on budgeting her allowance. Perhaps a quck stop on Wall Street and a meeting with Donald Trump would set her on the path to wise investing. Of course she has already learned the first lesson of money management. Don't spend YOUR money on soething worthless (like some hapless homeless person who will never repay you). Instead, profess compassion while getting someone else to donate. Then give to the person who has invested in YOU. Olive may be smarter than her years.
I've been a teacher for over 30 years, and have never, ever heard a child say that they like to practice gratitude. Olive is indeed very special. (and she says "indeed", too!)
Carlye- Mary's late husband (dear Jack) was dead long before Social Security came into effect.
Mary's wealth came primarily from running numbers for Dutch Schultz and from overseeing Legs Diamond's bootlegging operation during Prohibition. She was a black market war profiteer during WWII, and by the time the 50's rolled around, she was running the Hoboken docks operation for the Genovese family.
During the 1960's, the heat on the New York families caused Mary to move her base of operations to the West Coast. She now lives there in genteel retirement in the same condo complex which sheltered Whitey Bulger. Unknown to most, but strongly suspected by the FBI fine arts squad, Mary has the stolen paintings from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum heist hidden in her Charterstone Storage unit.

Oh great! Olive buys Mary a knockoff Gucci scarf. It's really gonna look nice when it bleeds all over Mary's $2,000 cashmere coat.

Whoa, Olive, Big Spender! Where did she get the money, a little rooting through her mother's purse while Mom and Dad are Tee-Heeing away?
When our girls finally return from their shopping spree, I hope to see Evy and Ed smoking a cigarette. Please, Uncle Joe?

Okay, but more importantly, I've just figured out how our leader came up with Wanders.
W(es) Anderson... Wanders on.... Did everyone else but me already know this?
Dear Olive, "practice gratitude" or "platitude"? I'm thinking the latter.
Olive is nuts.
