"Hmmm... Harlan is knowledgeable about things? I wonder if he would be a good substitute for my Ask Wendy column? Perhaps he could offer some advice on what to do when your daughter is dating her substitute professor."
.... Wait a minute! Is that Chin Napkin's cousin, Blue Chin Napkin? I think Beatrice Chestnut, 5th grade colorist, didn't even recognize Chin Napkin so she mistakenly colored him blue.
Edited to add: Pay attention to Vince's comment today! He spotted Batman in the photos behind Dawn. Joe Giella drew for Batman comics back when I was a kid. Great find, Vince. And thanks, Joe.

Wilbur, at last.
"The sandwich awakens"
Good catch, wanders. I didn't even notice Blue Chin Napkin.
Now that I'm looking more intently, I'm getting dizzy trying to look for anything consistent about the room layout from panel to panel. What's behind Dawn? What's behind Wilbur?
Their tumblers remind me of the ones that Luke Skywalker drank out of when he was having dinner with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru.
Nothing is consistent in the room layout, Toots McGee! Maybe the table and chairs are on a turntable that revolves as Dawn and Wilbur dine. Or, maybe the table and chairs are stationary, and the rest of the room is revolving.
Wilbur's "HMMM..." has all kinds of possibilities. I like Wanders's "Ask Wendy" suggestion. Also, how about:
"I wonder how much Harlan knows about sandwiches."
"If Dawn marries one of her professors, can she get free tuition? I've been paying for the past 17 years."
Most likely: "Who is Harlan?"
False Alarm, Wanders. That is a guest appearance by Occasional Chair (Slipcovered), in hallway.
Maybe Wilbur can start a competition with Dawn and take Harlan fishing and kite flying.
Is that Batman in the family pictures?
While spearing a forkful of spuds with her right hand, Dawn has deftly used her left to move her tumbler to the other side of her plate. I just love Joe's musical place settings. By the way, if you're not going to tuck your napkin under your chin, wouldn't you put it on your lap?
Vince, great find. I've updated my posting to reference your comment!
Haha. Joe's been lobbying for years to work Batman in somewhere. Way to go, Joe.
Why you'd put a picture of Batman in a frame with your family portrait on the sideboard/bookshelf/kitchen counter/dresser/credenza, I have no idea.
That photo is from the Halloween when Wilbur dressed up like Batman and 9-year-old Dawn was Robin. Dawn has had the same hairstyle since birth.
I would have never noticed the studio portrait of Batman. (Definitely not the Affleck version) I'm more sure than ever that Joe Giella is messing with us, and taking great delight in doing so. Love you, Uncle Joe! Keep up the great work.
Since Wilbur doesn't have the Hitchcock-like overhead shot of the dinner table that we lucky readers have, perhaps his "Hmmmm...." refers to his lust for what is on Dawn's plate.
I'm looking at panel 2 and trying to make the "Hmmm" sound like Wilbur is with his mouth the way it is, and all I can come up with is "Haaah". You can learn a lot from this strip, and I'll keep practicing despite my wife's looking at me like I'm crazy.
They're eating colorful food! What can be the meaning of this? And that's not Batman, it's Mary wearing the cowl she wears when she is stalking people.
May 3,2016: Today blue chin napkin will be portrayed by Wilbur's giant iPhone.
Where's Wanders? Today's strip is delicious!!! In honor of Wilbur (alias my Dad), I'm eating a sandwich as I read. I can't wait for Mary's take on this whole "friendship"!
Hearty applause for Giella!
