Mary Worth 2946

Brandy is really good at doing running on the Boardwalk. And she knows all the modern lingo like “Penny for your thoughts.” And she’s considerate enough to explain what it means to Tommy who is not as good at doing running as Brandy and has to sit down to talk.

Plus, when someone says “Are you breaking up with me?” and pretends to be joking, they are scary insecure. She’s perfect for Tommy who will continue to perpetuate disfunction in her life.

A perfect match.

Today's Boldface Haiku is titled

"It's Not You, It's Alky Druggie".

Thoughts! Something mind!
I do. Sit down...
Whoa, serious! Breaking up?

Where are all the panels that brought us to "Lover Boy?" I feel cheated.

Lover Boy? Did that ancient little term of endearment make a comeback, or did Moy just pluck it off the bottom of the Wayback Machine's glossary of hip '50s jive?

And I second the motion of others here in fearing that next week will be nothing but Brandy thought balloons mulling over what to do about Tommy's revelation, followed by a week of her talking it over with some unsuspecting sounding board, followed by another week of dithering. Ugh.

My thoughts are running along the same line as Scottie McW. I don’t think Ms. Moy understands how people talk in the 21st century. It only underscores my belief that KM sits in a dark room watching really old movies, where tough broads call their guys “lover boy”, and young thugs call their mothers “Ma”.

Thanks Karen Moy. Now I'll hear Turn Me Loose whenever I see Tommy.

Oh, I forgot. Before we get to a week of Brandy thought balloons, we'll have a week of Tommy groveling at Brandy's feet and begging for understanding.

Does it need a psychic to say that for the next week Tommy will rattle on about vague Terrible Things he did because of The Drugs, without giving any interesting details or discussing his rehab, maintenance, or plans?

For years I've been ranting and raving about Moy's use of "Dear" as the only term of affection her couples use, regardless of their age. The good news: apparently she's finally listening to me. The bad news: all she can come up with is Lover Boy? I should have kept my mouth shut.

And I agree. For sure we're in for a few weeks of weeping and gnashing of teeth. Grab some Oreos or Chips-Ahoy; I see a lot of milky tears ahead.

This “running” must be at a snail’s pace to permit quaint chatter like this, or any kind of chatter. Actually, I think they’re not running at all, just holding the pose in p. 1. and trying to fool people. Forget it, you two dopes.

I agree with Wanders. Brandy went from hearing, “Sit down” to “OMG, the only guy who drives me around and buys me meals is breaking up with me!” in record time. These two DO deserve each other. I hope they emulate Adrian and Scott (remember them?) and drive off into the sunset, I.e.,, oblivion.

I have never called any man I’ve dated nor have I called either of my husbands “lover boy”. They would have permission to leave me if I had ever done that. What’s next, Tommy calling her “doll”. But then this is someone who called his last girlfriend “Tina baby”.

Like everyone says we are on for weeks of “lover girls’s” thought balloons with the requisite floating heads.

For the jukebox:

‘Love is Strange’

by Mickey and Sylvia

“Sylvia?”
“Yes, Mickey?”
“How do you call your lover boy?”
“Come here, lover boy!”

LoverBoy? Changing one letter of that name would make it Tommy-appropriate. "LoserBoy" is the correct moniker for Tommy Beedie. What's this, "you're not going to dump me, are you" stuff? I did not realize that TSSB (the sailors said Brandy) was that hard up! Her lack of self esteem makes her more likely to accept Tommy's sordid past. She might even find it kind of fatherly.

I'm with everyone else — the only time I've ever heard anyone called "lover boy" the person speaking was addressing a platonic friend in a playfully sarcastic tone. (Not that I'd expect that kind of subtlety from MW...)

@Tim — Glad I'm not the only one to have thought of the band, though "Working For The Weekend" is what came to my mind as it's the most over-played Loverboy song on the radio stations I listen to.
