Mary Worth 3384

I like Lyle. Turquoise shirt, purple hair, frowny-face wrist tattoo. He's got just the right amount of rebellious angst to believably be messing up his daughter's life. And now, he's got a favor to ask his mother-in-law's cousin whom he hasn't seen since, I'm guessing, his wife's funeral 13 years ago. What kind of favor do you ask your mother-in-law's cousin, that you can't ask your siblings, or your deceased wife's siblings, or your mother-in-law's siblings? This sounds like the set up for some very compelling and believable drama... or some hilarious madcap high-jinks.

Seeing Greta's sad look in Panel 2, it's obvious how this will turn out. Mary will find Lyle a new wife, by dragging him to the Woman Shelter.

Today's Boldface Haiku is titled

"On Charterstone Pond".

Hasn't. Very close.
Sorry.
Help?
Actually, there is...

Is that a photo of Madi as a baby, or of Lyle’s favorite Cabbage Patch doll?

"Is there anything I can do to help?"

"Actually, Saul, there is . . ."

@fauxprof, you beat me to the punch about the Cabbage Patch kid reference!

Great comments so far gang! I predict t that Rebel Madi will come to Chaterstone and find crusty old cousin-in-law Myster Wynter too square and he'll foist her on two bigger squares, namely Mary and Toby. Wait'll she starts making one of those Jell-O desserts with Toby!

Lyle's home office assistant, also wearing a dark gray suit, helpfully holds the phone up to Lyle's ear from his position on the floor. As for Lyle's hair, he, too, would like to see Team Worth replace the current colorist with somebody who is not suffering from chronic depression.

@Regina, I anticipate a food fight if young Madi is pressed into ANY sort of dessert preparation. Perhaps Saul can enlist the assistance of Dawn in mentoring Madi. It takes a (Charterstone) Village. I'm still puzzling over Lyle living with his mother-in-law and Madi, who I assume is his daughter with his mother-in-law's daughter. Who lives with their mother-in-law after their wife either has died or divorced?

I like how Moy scrupulously avoids calling Madi's mother or grandmother by name. Plot twist: Lyle's ex is also Wilbur's ex. Whenever she realizes how annoying a child is, she splits.

All of today’s comments, and the BFH title, have me rolling on the floor laughing. Great ideas, everyone! Good call on Lyle’s wrist, Wanders. Your attention to detail is outstanding.

Is Saul colorblind? That’s the only thing that explains the hideous pillow on the brown sofa and the purple lamp base. Maybe he swiped the lamp from Mary’s digs.

Two old TV references were triggered for me today:

The photo of Madi made me think of Talky Tuna, the murderous doll in a Twilight Zone episode.

The thought of Toby connecting with Madi reminded me of the Mary Tyler Moore show episode in which Sue Ann Nivens becomes a Big Sister to a teen girl with attitude. Instead of Sue Ann encouraging the girl to get on the straight and narrow, Sue Ann starts emulating the girl’s clothing and hairstyle. Stand by for Tough Toby - $)@]#%!

Argh, Talky Tina, NOT Tuna! She’s a doll, not a fish [grumble].

@LouiseF, my mother took in her mother-in-law many years after my dad passed away even though they weren't very close. But MIL couldn't live alone anymore and her own daughter just couldn't be bothered. When MIL (my grandmother) passed away, lo and behold the cousins showed up with a U-Haul to claim her stuff. Gotta love family!
