Mary Worth 385

For those of you who have never experienced a Mary Worth Flashback, let me prepare you for the excitement you are about to endure. First, Lynn will talk about telling a story for perhaps a week. Then Lynn will give three weeks worth of exposition. A character will be introduced, in this case a boy, and Lynn will talk about her feelings for the character. And then after about five weeks, Something Will Happen. Usually something nice. Like someone being kind, or generous, or vaguely romantic. Whatever it is can usually be accomplished with minimal physical motion. Then Lynn will talk about how her life has been changed by this experience. (See My Compulsion to Help Others.) So, as you can see, this will be great, just as long as Lynn's story doesn't contain any action.

Wanders, are we going to get a flashback like that time when Mary talked about being poor and having empty cupboards? Or will she just tell the story panel-by-panel with her words?

Where are they? The exterior looks like a suburban hospital, and the chairs that Mary and Lynn are sitting in certainly have that disinfectant-smelling look about them. Which must mean that Frank hurriedly threw skating pictures all over the walls of the hospital room, lest Lynn forget for a single minute the importance of her competitive standing.

I think they're just in some sort of antiseptic "lounge" at the rink. But it does bring up a point: if an athlete faints during a practice session, don't they usually, oh, seek medical attention??? From someone with better credentials than "nosy old self-important biddy"? Shouldn't Lynn be at the emergency room, at least to check for concussion from her unconscious fall to the ice?

Something about all this just gives me that comfortable "I know what to expect" confidence to face what ever this warped joyless Mary Worth world has to throw my way. Read on brothers and sisters. Read on...

jvwalt,

Actually, Lynn got the okay from the rink doctor. But I've had a very busy week and didn't post on those days. Please, please don't rely on this blog to keep you up to date on Mary Worth. Please take it upon yourselves to read the source. Read the source! All you get from me is a minimal abridgment -- and surely, that is not enough Mary Worth for any soul.

Too bad this strip can't show what's going on in Santa Royale without that old busybody out of town. I bet it's rather like what happens on "Keeping Up Appearances" when Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced "Boo-kay") goes on vacation, with neighbors jumping for joy to be free from that nosy crone for a little while.

Wanders,

I can't believe you fell for the old "let me tell you a story" canard. Lynn's not going to tell a story about the boy in the picture. She's going to tell Mary (and the rest of us) about the picture! Nothing else.

"So, I saw this boy's picture in a magazine and thought he was really cute, so I cut it out and have been carrying it around, like he was my real boyfriend or something, just so I could show it to people. But it got all worn out, so I had to go on eBay and buy a copy of the magazine from someone in North Dakota. But that one got worn out, too. So then I went to the library and cut the picture out, but I got caught by the librarian, and then I had to go dust the books in the reference section to pay for my crimes. Oh, you wouldn't believe all the trouble that picture has caused me!"

I can't wait to hear all the gorey details!
