Mary Worth 391

Some things last a long time? That's today's platitude? What kind of quote book is Ms. Moy using? "A Gazillion Things People Have Said"? Yes, Lynn, some things last a long time... but then again, some things don't:

Today's Full Strip

Before any of you hipster readers start spouting your knowledge of popular culture at me, just be sure you've read today's secret messages.

orange and magenta is a detestable color combination.

Well, finally! That explains it all. What a payoff!

It is quite remarkable to see a Daniel Johnston quote in a Mary Worth strip!

Underblog: Quite remarkable, or shockingly non-sensical? Terribly cool, or annoyingly incongruent? It's like when Mary asked Jeff to take her to see Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova... it is just out of place. And it's making the Charterstone Jukebox an eclectic hodgepodge of songs I know Mary would love, like "See the USA in Your Chevrolet," and songs Karen Moy quotes to make sure we know she is hipper than Mary's bad hips.

Here I thought Mrs. Wanders (I still think of her as "Mother," you know--and the Taco Queen) had gotten up extra early with you to read Mary Worth, then at the drop of a hat composed that song to mock Karen Moy. Turns out I'm not even as hip as Karen Moy is--who is Daniel Johnston anyway?

I was hoping Greg had committed suicide over their her, now THAT would have made her reaction make more sense.

It would be so awesome if someone who is more photoshop competent than I am could use figures from Daniel Johnston drawings and speech bubbles from Mary Worth to make the best imaginary artistic collaboration in the last decade. Just sayin.

"How dare you accuse me of tampering with the brakes or buying him liquor or pushing him to take that last fatal drive! I had nothing to do with that accident! I -- Oh wait, this is your friend Greg we're talking about, right? Not Aldo Kelrast? Oh, right, what a shame your little friend died in a car accident."

I opt for "shockingly non-sensical" I can only hope that when Mary says she's sorry about Greg's untimely death, Lynn says "Don't be."

"Some things last a long time", kinda like a Moy story line. Wouldn't it be cool if she were parodying classic Mary Worth kind of like Al Capp did? Except that Al did it well. Even if it is parody which it's not, Moy sucks.

I can see why Moy appreciates Daniel Johnston. They come from the same talent pool.

Well, dead boyfriend ... did anyone have that in the not-a-real-contest stakes??

If we're inserting random platitudes/quotes from songs:

And all the roads we have to walk are winding
And all the lights that lead us there are blinding

Moral of this story. Don't drive on winding roads if a) it's icy or b) you know Mary Worth.

What's left of this story then other than four more weeks of watching Frank and Lynn's relationship disintegrate?

You know, you kick back on a Sunday morning, warmly ensconced in your favorite robe, first bite of crisp buttered toast and sip of hot coffee, and with sleep still in your eyes you peel open the paper. Nothing challenging today; just the comics.

And you see this depressing, sad little tale of death and crushed dreams.

And you close the paper. And you shuffle off. And you curse Karen Moy.

You curse Karen Moy yet again. Because this miserable crap is *still* better than the Summer of Identity Theft '08.

how old is that horrible songstylist in the Johnson song?

And here I thought we were going to add one of those songs from the 1950s about some kid dyin' in his girlfriend's arms after a car wreck.
LOOOK OUT! LOOOOOK OUT! LLLLLOOOOOOK OUT!

Whose right hand is grabbing Mary's face???

Anonymous said...

YES....that hand on Mary's face seems to be coming from her own left arm...However it also appears as if her left hand is attached backwards, judging by the fact her thumb is the digit showing so prominently.

That's Mary's Miss Manners pinkie. Up for tea, down for gestures around the face.

I just got an email from Jad Fair. He actually wrote the lyics to "Some Things Last A Long Time" for the album he made with Daniel.
