I'm sorry, I really shouldn't blog about things I don't understand, and today is just one more proof that I really don't understand "Mary Worth." Adrian pulls into Charterstone to drop off Mary, and then proceeds to drive over a mountain before getting to Mary's parking lot. Charterstone is much bigger than I thought.
The comic above is much bigger than you think as well. Click on it for the full image. If you dare.

Yes, Wanders, I found it quite odd that Adrian had to drive down the mountain to drop Mary off. I also found quite troubling the reference to "A true friend stabs you in the front." WTH??? So Karen Moy really DOES know that she portrays Mary as a meddling busybody!
The third thing that troubled me about today's strip is that Mary is apparently getting too feeble to unfasten her own seatbelt. At first I thought it odd that Adrian was being chivalrous, but then decided from the previous panel that Mary appears to be having trouble with the seatbelt, so Adrian has to walk around to open Mary's car door and assist her with it!
I think the reference means that a true friend will say something to your face, even if it hurts, so maybe Jill is the true friend here.
And because she's dissing Jill, Adrian deliberately drives past Charterstone and is about to let Mary step out of the car and tumble down a cliff.
My brain hurts.
What with the subtle (but BoldFace) hints, it appears that Jill's "wedding planning experience" was "for her own affair." I'll bet that, after all that work of planning, the groom never showed. She was abandoned, left standing at the altar--a joke for all to see. Which, of course, made her cynical about anybody else's future happiness. Hence Moy's choice of the character's name: Jill, short for "jilted." What a great oppertunity for another six-month MW intervention!
Oops, I meant "opportunity." Sorry about the typo.
Is Santa Royale undergoing a nuclear assault or something in pannel 5 today?
Today's whole strip is delightfully mixed up, but I think my favorite panel has to be #3. There are no people in that moving car! Details, Mr. Giella, details!
I believe the Wilde quote should be interpreted here to mean "Jill is not a true friend -- she is a backstabber." (However, I defer to my esteemed colleagues on this. My mind is still reeling from when both Adrian and Mary so casually lied to Jill, saying they didn't want dessert ... and then ordered pie after Jill left!)
Yes, so many things to grab our attention in today's comic, beginning with that strange quote!
And that last panel-- My, how FAR away Adrian is from Mary! All this time while Mary has struggled with that seatbelt, A. quickly undid hers, hopped out of the car and walked all the way around, as if to say "hurry up old lady!" And, haha--Mary doesn't look like she appreciates Adrian's defense of Jill one bit!
You just know Mary can't WAIT to go tell Toby Cameron about all this!!!
I had a thought...since Jill and Scott are "staying local" for their honeymoon, perhaps Ian and Toby could loan them their Scotland DVD? That way they could at least pretend they went to an "exotic" place. A win-win.
or maybe they could borrow a spicy DVD from Charley Smith's collection.
The car without passengers or a driver is hysterical. Everyone's comments here are brilliant today!
A mountain in Santa Royale! Finally we understand the "varied landscape" description. Now if Mary would please hurry inside to change out of that hideous outfit, we can talk about her "varied wardrobe."
Okay, I just figured out the varied terrain at Charterstone. Out here in Santa Fe we have several large housing developments spread campus-like over large acreage. Maybe that's the story here?
(Or Giella hasn't been outside in years?)
My verification word is "ogine". Wouldn't it be fun if we had to incorporate our verifications into our postings? Nah...
Adrian is a different character altogether on Sundays, isn't she? Sekf-possesed, poised, confident...
I'll call her "Sundadrian".
By the way, I would move to Santa Royal. It's beautiful.
Charterstone must have been designed by Mike Brady. Boy, what an eyesore, no wonder it is so out of the way. The Santa Royale planning commission sure had theur hands full approving that ugly place.
It's not just the mountain, it's also Adrian's driving. They both have whiplash in the last panel.
@trixietrudy: the "varied terrain" found in and around Charterstone is, in fact, Martian. Check out panel 5. Mary and Adrian have just landed on Mars, with the sun glowing an orange shade through all the ochre dust...
