Mary Worth 957

"Hee hee hee hee... oooo... I've never been online before.... I suppose just one time won't do any harm.... hee hee hee hee.... oooo... it's like another world!...."

I believe Karen Moy's impression of the Internet is that it is as dangerous for old ladies as medicine cabinets are for teenagers. And good ol' Wilbur Weston has become the world's most dangerous pusher. I wonder if he has any art that could scar children?

Jeff has to get jealous that Mary won't Kindle with him, but she'll Twitter with Wilbur in his apartment.
By the way, I didn't know the apartments opened to the outside. I thought they only opened into a hallway. I wonder why, after putting away her groceries, Mary went outside to go to his apartment. Does she want to be seen?

After the usual awkward gestures and stilted dialogue in panel 1, Mary crosses the threshold into Wilbur's lair. As she looks around and assesses the situation(ceiling tiles - check; lovely pink curtains - check; lamp that moves across the room at will - check; all systems go!), Wilbur pulls the door shut with a satisfying CLICK! I am all shivery!

Mary equates tweeting with suicide? I guess I was right about the noose yesterday.

Wilbur looks a little John Wayne Gacy in that second panel. I hope Mary can tie that scarf to a bedpost and make an escape if Wilbur doesn't have his popup blocker on.

Wilbur certainly looks unreasonably happy about Mary 'diving in'...sorry Citizen Kane, looks like you're about to get your walking papers.

Um, what happened to all of our "foreshadowing" plot points from yesterday?

Was Mary's pose on the ladder just to give us a good look at her gams?

I was envisioning an - at least somewhat - more interesting storyline set at Hospital. (Whatever it's called). Now we're inside Wilbur's apartment with no apparent damage to Mary.

How bored am I that I wanted to see an old lady fall from a ladder, strictly for the - possibly, anyway - excitement level?

The look on Wilbur's face makes me cry.

Oh, Wilbur, you changed your shirt.

Why did Wilbur change his shirt?

Drak said...

Hilarious timing, anon... but I beat you to it.

@Drak and Anon: Wilbur *didn't* change his shirt. The amoebae all jumped off, committing suicide at the inanity of this plot. It was too boring even for them.

Why do I have this sick feeling that Wilbur is collecting old ladies to make himself an old lady suit?

If Wilbur's intent is to harvest old lady skin, he's picked a good day, 'cause I haven't seen Mary's neck this saggy in years! Her arms are looking rather plump too.

Dawn will come home and find Wilbur in the living room, wearing a long gray wig, dancing around to ''Goodbye, Horses''. Meanwhile, a dehydrated Helen Clark screams helplessly in the basement, while poor Ella Byrd's withered skin is draped over a dressmaker's dummy in Kurt's old room...

Maybe it's just me, but Wilbur's welcome to Mary seems a bit stilted. If she were there just to watch tv with him, would be say, "Mary, come in. Are you ready to watch some television shows, like 'Desperate Housewives'?"

First, Wilbur will condition Mary to accept Facebook and Twitter, then he'll get her comfortable with riskier endeavors like "surfing the 'net." From there, it's just a hop, skip and a jump to internet porn. Oh Mary, you're a lamb being led to the slaughter.

Mary's appearance in panel 1 of today's strip is practically beatific, like a devotional painting out of the Renaissance. Her hands clasped in prayer, as Wilbur points the way to Bethlehem -- I mean, to The Twitter.

So Mary has adorned herself with a jaunty scarf and is checking to make sure she remembered to insert both earrings as she begins her visit to Wilbur's Twitterdome.

This makes no sense! Wasn't Wilbur recently in a wax because Dawn was becoming dependent on social networking, and Mary was staunchly defending old-time reading matter in the face of Jeff's glee about electronic books? So now Wilbur and Mary are curled up together, ready to explore the Twitter in tandem? Are they going to get busy, in a manner more than friendly, because the eviltry of the worldwide interweb has lured them to defy their somewhat wholesome natures?

(And phoebes in santa fe, I too was expecting Mary to topple from her stool, introducing a new injury-themed story line, and we couldn't have been the only ones.)

Robert--I was thinking Mary had more of a "Mr. Myagi/Ancient Chinese Secret" look going in panel one. She also seems to be giving a shout-out to fellow comic book tenant Popeye with those forearms (sans anchor tatoo).

Luckily in frame 2 the forearms have shriveled a bit. Wilbur is definitely sporting a crazed look (good call @StevenW4922) to go with Mary's positively giddy look about playing in the wilds of "social networks like Twitter."

the closeup of the legs from yesterday has me baffled .next wilbers hand over marys on the computer mouse then anything goes

I don't know why it has taken me so long, but this so-called "story-line" has finally helped me understand Karen Moy and her vision.

She isn't a slapdash hack at all -- she's an auteur, just like Robert Altman!

Like Altman, she isn't so much interested in plot, as she is in behavior. I predict the step will be a big country music concert at Santa Royale's version of the Parthenon.

Brick--I also noticed Mary's weight gain. Did she eat all the Kelk while standing on her stool? And what's in Kelk, anyway, that it has made her so giddy over the thought of Twitter that she doesn't notice the predatory look on Wilbur's face?

Vicki said...

To learn about the Twitter you want to check what popular topics are trending. I would suggest #Kelk as a comfortable place for Mary to start!
#tallkitchenstools would be another.

Dave in Parma, you're probably more on the money than me!

I wish the whole internet would swallow them up and we could be done with this story.
