Mary Worth 958

By expressing an interest in what younger people are drawn to, no doubt Mary Worth hopes to draw younger people to her. And no doubt, Karen Moy hopes to draw younger people to her strip. But with characters like Wilbur Weston continuing to push the boundaries of creepiness, I would advise younger people to steer clear. Older people too.

Today's Full Strip

Is it me, or is Wilbur starting to look like that guy's father? You know, that guy, who went on that one date, but he couldn't love because his father spent all that time looking for Richie's killer. Seriously, I can't remember either character's name, and I wish I could forget the story.

But I know one thing -- Wilbur sure as heck doesn't look like Kurt Evans' father.

I was also noticing Wilbur's travel down ugly road. He is no looker, for sure, but in the past 10 panels or so, he looks like he has taken subsequent beatings from the ugly stick!

Wilbur is now illustrated as being one step away from actually waving around the knife he's so obviously hiding.

Wanders, you know we would all steer clear if we could. But it is too late. We are inexplicably drawn to these characters, who are inexplicably drawn.

Our only hope is that Moy will bore herself to the point where she just can't make herself do this every day. Of course, then the series would probably go into reruns like "Peanuts" and "For Better or for Worse".

Wilbur is getting uglier, Mary is getting chunkier - that travel down Ugly Road is doing neither of them any favors. I can't wait to see what Dawn looks like when she gets back home.

Does Mary have a computer? Or is Wilbur starting at the beginning - explaining how the "tubes" work and what email is, and how to "surf the web", and even, how to "cut and paste"?

This story is getting so boring. Are we to sit through three months of "computer tutorial"?

What happened to the amoebas (amoebae?) on Wilbur's shirt?

Elaine said...

Anonymous - the amoebae jumped ship when they saw how boring this was going to be

Wilbur is disturbed that Dawn was addicted to social networks. Now he seems downright giddy at the prospect of Mary getting hooked. Does anyting Moy writes ever make sense?

Mary mush have been a real bundle of nerves when she got her first push button phone.

Wilbur is looking more and more sinister with each panel. It reminds me of Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde.

It occurs to me who Wilbur looks like now...we had this creepy teacher in junior high who taught choir and journalism. We had to take some sort of music and I liked journalism so I had him two hours every day. He couldn't get more than two words out without hacking his lungs out and then he'd pop a throat disk like it was a piece of candy, suck on it and repeat the whole miserable cycle all over again. Then whenever he had a chance, he'd run to his little back room and smoke (it was the mid-80s so there was still smoking in schools). He'd finish his smoke, come out, hack, suck on the Sucrets, rinse, repeat.
Anyway, that's who Wilbur looks like.

Here's a link to an amusing article from the Palm Beach Post:

Apparently "Machiavellian puppet master" Mary had a stalker a few years ago- his name was Aldo Kelrast(!) and he looked like Captain Kangaroo. Must have been during the decades when I was not following Mary.

I recently watched "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" for the zillionth time, and I think I spotted Moy on a gurney, being wheeled into the "treatment room." That explains a lot.

After being spurned by Dawn, a now-deranged Wilbur made it his life's pursuit to befriend everyone else on the Internet and turn them against his twit(ter) of a daughter. Having "The Meddler" on board for his villainy is a key component in the plan.

I have a feeling Wilbur is going to stumble into and reveal some of the um... "social networks" he affiliates with, while showing Mary the ropes of this here Internet thing. This could get as downrigth embarrassing as Charley's video collection!

Meg,
Wanders keeps files of characters down the right side of the main MW&Me page. It is a hoot to catch up with all of the characters.

You are not the only one who isn't a lifelong follower.

Who wants to be in a social network with Mary?? I DO, I DO!!

I think the amoebe disappeared because Giella realized they were just too much trouble to draw for the length of time this boring story is sure to drag on....

Unfortunately after the upcoming two weeks of Wilbur's computer demonstration, we will be subjected to several weeks of Mary compiling a list of all the pros and cons of joining a social network. Should she settle that drama, excuse me--"major life decision"-- in the "pro" column, we'll be subjected to several more weeks of choosing which 'social network' to join.

And given that Mary owns neither a computer nor a wi-fi enabled Kindle/portable reading device (and Dr. Jeff sure as shingles isn't going to share at this point), she'll be forced to get on her adult tricycle (with her notes in the flowered basket hanging from the handle-bars) and wheel on down to the local public library for some public access computer use.

Ugh.

Amanda Kate said...

Why does Wilbur look so evil today? Is this social networking thing a farce to get Mary into his house so he can force her to use a kindle? Oh wait, that's Jeff.

Anonymous said...

Mary is going to wish she went with the Kindle rather than Twitter.

Elaine said...

Okay - who started @Wilbur_Weston??? Those tweets are just as boring as I imagined they'd be...

Wanders, a good reason to warn old people away from"Mary Worth" is the probability they will not still be alive when a storyline finally ends. Kind of like why 98-year olds don't buy green bananas.

My word, Mary is brave. If The Picture of Dorian Grey were offering to teach me about Twitter, I'd run like crazy.

I've been sort of busy in the past couple of weeks, and haven't really been keeping up with Mary Worth. It's nice to see that I haven't missed anything...
