Mary Worth 1,075

Oh, no! Jeff has cancer and Mary has a table for one to sit at while she regrets not marrying him. Sheesh... now I have to make cancer jokes for the next four months. I'm not up to that.

what is the waitress doing in the second panel? Is she taking down the names of all the losers who accept her offer of a "table for one"?

Ooh, we're about to get poignant!

No, wait, what's that word?
Oh yeah, plodding.

Let me guess: The waitress is going to talk Mary into marrying Jeff after all. (If at any point she utters the words "Let me tell you a story," I'll love her forever.)

1) Was Mary the patient, or offering someone meddling, er, medical advice?
2) Will Liza, bussing tables, run to the diner's back room to avoid Mary and hide shame at having failed the University's sales training program?
3) Will Mary feel embarrassment at being alone or spout a platitude on the strength of being alone?

The hairstylist in Santa Royale should be forced into another occupation. What she did to that waitress is cruel.

Maybe that's why Mary insists upon using her cement wig rather than subjecting herself to that person's whims.

I'd also like to nominate "One" (as in "One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do...") by Harry Nillson. The Aimee Mann cover is nice as well.

I do believe that Mary is relishing the thought that she can still ask for a table for ONE. Close call, I thought for a minute that she might actually consider that last marriage proposal.

There will be a deathbed wedding, mark my words! I just hope I live long enough to see it.

Looks to me like the waitress's nametag says "GINA." It also looks to me like Mary's sizing up a potential new girlfriend for Drew--or maybe for Jeff.

Elaine said...

@kathyo - perish the thought! With that hair?!

I wonder what will happen next?

No, No I really don't.

I think we're in for a few weeks of Mary reenacting the old Steve Martin movie ''The Lonely Guy''!

Mary's about to reconnect with Ted Confrey, who just happens to be having pie ala mode and a cup of decaf in this very same diner. What a coincidence!

Maude, I'm hoping that Mary will reinact the scene from "Five Easy Pieces." She'll tell the waitress to hold the chicken between her knees. lol

But now I'm curious, the way that this waitress popped up in the final panel: Will she be a new character? Will she have more dialogue? Will she be a new love interest for Dr. Drew? Find out on the next episode of Soap!

I have to admit to feeling giddy when I saw Ponytailed Waitress (who looks a little like Archie's Veronica) in the strip today. It was such a relief to just see a new face! All we'd seen for weeks was Mary and Jeff, Mary and Jeff. Not the most scintillating faces to gaze upon.

And what kind of life is Mary angling to hold onto, anyway? Look at her last few days: 1) reject marriage proposal (again). 2) march off to doctor's office to get inspiring clean bill of health (harkening back to Kathyo's recent suggestion about how what she and Jeff "share" might be best treated with antiobiotics). And 3) head into diner, alone, clutching purse. Sounds kind of pathetic, really.

Wanders, I just saw that Blue Man Group is coming to our town. The tickets are $100.00 each! Is it worth it?

I suspect Waitress will realize there isn't an open Table For One for Mary, and will ask an unsuspecting victim ... I mean, fellow diner into sharing a table with Mary, thus allowing our heroine to meddle in the next thrilling story.

Maude Findlay said...

Hmm, perhaps Mary will have to share a table with a handsome older bachelor? Maybe cheating on Jeff (oops! sorry, I meant ''making a new friend'') again will spice things up in the Worthyverse! We haven't seen a good Jeff & Mary tiff since the Ron Almalfi Incident!

djangosmom... Re: Blue Man Group. It depends on which show they're doing... The first time I saw them, they were incredible.... second time, not so much. If you can easily afford the 100 bucks, go, just so can say that you did.

New faces, same old hair...

@kathyo -- Oh my gosh . . . she does share my name. And I wore a ponytail today too. I'M IN MARY WORTH!! AIEEEEEEE!!!!! Someone get me out!!!

Vicki said...

"Table for ONE" must be our key phrase, I think. Ponytail waitress will tell Mary a sad story about how lonely it is for widows, etc. Maybe her own sick, widowed mom sits alone in her rocking chair all day staring out the window, etc.
Mary with her "clean bill of health" will realize she SHOULD marry Jeff. Or...I dunno, maybe just sign up for some Hip Hop lessons at the SR Dance studio.

I wonder if waitress Gina works the diner all day, working for her man, and then she brings home her pay for love...for love! (Because Tommy, her man, used to work at the docks but his union's been on strike)

Maude Findlay said...

Well, Gina should hold on to what she's got. It doesn't make a difference if she makes it, or not. They have each other, and that's a lot, for love. Just give it a shot!

OK, somebody is trying to be funny! My word verification was ''choad''!
