Mary Worth 1,085

You shouldn't give up on love until you are at least 34. No one falls in love after 34, of course, but you're barely 30.

Please, please make it about your mother. I know everything about mothers.

Mary, Mary, stop interrupting and let her tell her story! We're not getting any younger here. Also, I noticed that we were fed a tidbit of info about Gina this weekend: her last name is Baroni. Clearly Karen Moy is trying to cash in on the Jersey Shore phenomenon. Gina: Santa Royale's answer to Snooki? (After all, love doesn't seem to be for Snooki, either...)

Does Gina only know one way to express herself - 'fate has dealt me a cruel blow'? I'm already getting tired of that phrase. And Mary, stop getting so excited about the prospect of another love gone bad story. I'm beginning to think that she should just run her errands with Jill, so she can cut to the quick and start planning weddings with the man of Mary's choice.

Gina is definitely too young to give up on love. After all, Mary is still toying with Jeff's affections at the spry age of 87. Gina has decades of opportunities ahead of her!

My guess as to what cruel fate Gina has been given-

She can't have children, OR she inherited her mother's disease, and could possibly pass it on to children, OR it causes her to be unable to have children.

It's OK, though. When she and Drew get married and live in Vietnam, I'm sure there will be plenty of orphans at Peace Village for her to adopt.

Either moy is suffering from dementia and can't remember from day to day what she's written (hence the oft-repeated "dealt [fill in the appropriate pronoun] a cruel blow" line), or she assumes her entire audience is suffering from it and must constantly be reminded of the important facts of the glacially developing story line.

anessiv (implying a lack of aggressiveness? That would certainly describe Moy's storytelling technique.)

Mary, let me tell you a story: My father gunned down a man named "Richie" and we were constantly hounded by vigilantes and we had to move all the time! Oh, it was terrible--ALL the men in my life have been such scumbags!"

I sure hope the handicapped accessible ramp is obscured behind that landscaping over there! What is it with ADA compliance around here? Are there "seperate but equal" dining and healthcare facilities for the wheelchair bound?

And where are they headed? Is Mary going to treat Gina to lunch at the hospital (yum!)? Maybe Mary will don her volunteer vest (or other signifier) swing by the kitchen and grab a few trays bound for patients and she and Gina can eat them in Dr. Mike Roberts' office (I think he's still out making a fresh start somewhere.)

Maybe Mary just spotted Gina leaving DINER and followed her(because Gina likes to stroll around the hospital after her shift or during breaks...it's so soothing there...an it's air-conditioned!).

Who is Mary talking to in the second panel of today's strip? Is it her hand? One of those rocks? Vegetation? Every other character that's ever been in Mary Worth?

I'm starting to like all the generic labels in the strip. "Hospital", "Diner", "Manager" "Hi, My name is ___" tags.

It's got a BatCave feel to it..... "BatFingerPrint Analyzer" "Bat-Computer", "Bat-Toilet Brush"

Hey, while suffering an absence of Blog posts over the past days, I searched around for some "Mary Stuff" and found this.

http://www.ilovecomixarchive.com/M/Mary-Worth

It's a run of Mary from 1943...she's lost some weight over the last 70 years but she went by "Mrs Worth' but her meddling talents were still top notch...especially against the JAPANESE AND THE NAZI'S AND COMMIES!!

Well not really...but "Mary Worth - Against the Axis !" or "Mary Worth - Meddling with the Red Menace" would be fun

No one actually says "Fate has dealt me a cruel blow" -- and they sure as heck don't say it TWICE.

Vicki, love your story idea! LOL

Is Mary steering Gina toward the hospital on purpose? Perhaps since Mary was instrumental in getting Liza out of the nursing profession, Mary thinks it's her duty to fill that position herself. When fate has dealt you a cruel blow, a change in scenery (or profession) will turn that frown upside down!

This whole story line tedium has dealt ME a cruel blow.

Amanda Kate said...

Her cruel blow is that she rambles on for weeks before getting to the point. Good one, fate!

@Steven W: Thank you for the blast from the past! I love how the grammar has gone from all slang-y back then to extremely stilted now. And possibly the Sherry Vance storyline reveals Gina's "cruel blow" at the hands of fate--she's only got 2 weeks to live!!

Steven W - Thanks for the link. That was great. The other difference is that the plot also moved along much quicker in 1943.

is mary stalking gina to the diner or is it after work and gina does not approve of her tip/

This blow had better turn out to be really cruel or this will be the most disappointing storyline since the last storyline.

Shmoopie said...

....but nowhere near as disappointing as the next storyline!

"Let me tell you what I meant by that" - Gina
"Wait wait! Let me guess first!" - Mary

"I need your advice" - the most beautiful words in the English language to Meddlin' Mary. If Jeff started a marriage proposal with "I need your advice," she would probably accept.

My verification word is "beref" - one letter away from "bereft," which Gina purports to be. Unless she is indeed a scammer.
