Mary Worth 1,089

Just two peas? In a pod? Without any chaperone peas? Most pods I've seen have a lot of peas, looking after each other. Responsible peas don't let two kid peas couple up at such a ridiculously young age.

You can tell they were friends because she's doing the Wilbur-Weston-Bonding-Arm-Raise.

Also, she seems to have atrocious balance.

She's so happy! Look, she's giving the royal wave to everyone they pass. And they both have blue hair - they were made for each other. If only fate hadn't dealt her a cruel blow, this would have gone from a boring story to an uber-boring story.

"One night we were hanging out, when a car came speeding out of nowhere...before I knew it, shots were fired!"

Then one fateful day Bobby took me home to meet his mom, dad, and big sister Jill. Jill and I fit each other like a hand in a glove or a foot in a sock. Soon we were hanging out in every cheap gin joint in town. And before I knew it I was having (Bobby) Black-outs, forgetting who he was or even which vegetables we were supposed to represent...

The impossibly straight-cut ponytail makes another appearance as well as the incredible, size-morphing, basketball.

Although we already know that the ponytail never changes or gets messy, I can't wait to see what size the basketball becomes in the next panel!

Flat?
Enormous?
Somewhat deflated?

We'll just have to wait.

I'm charmed by the details in today's strip, especially the two hearts on Gina's pajama top. All that's missing is "G.B. + B.B." Not only that, the basketball changed size between panels.

OK, here's my worry. Gina has already told Mary that she was so devastated because of what happened to her father. But we're stuck in this long exposition about how wonderful the blue-haired high-fiving Bobby ("No Relation to Jill, Don't Get Too Excited") Black is, and I fear that it will be Labor Day before we get around to finding out what happened to dear old Dad. Unless Bobby's basketball team took a trip to NYC in September 2001 and dear old Dad was the chaperone and during an early morning visit to the WTC he heroically shepherded all the kids out of harm's way but went back one last time to make sure no one was left behind, and was tragically killed by falling debris. That would a) give us the 9/11 connection, b) explain the time gap between these two sappy teens and Gina's apparent current age, and c) be more interesting than whatever is actually in store for us. Thoughts?

These are the strangest looking kids I have ever seen! Or are they...pod people?

"We even enjoyed the moments during that difficult period when I broke my arm and had to have it set in the InvisiCast."

All good comments already this morning. I can't get over the blue-haired people, either.

They all look like illustrations from those 50's, 60's, and 70's comic books like, "True Love", "True Romance", etc, where all the figures looked like demented Barbie/Ken dolls.

They remind me of Cindy and Bobby Brady.

Why do I have the sinking feeling that we will spend the next week reading about how amazing Bobby Black is? Meanwhile, Mary Worth is sitting on that park bench thinking to herself "Speed it up a little. I ain't gettin' any younger."

Anywho....my word is "procracq," which just might be the new medication one would need to tolerate this storyline.

@James at 11:25:

"Speed it up a little. I ain't gettin' any younger."

Hahahaha

That's what we keep pleading to Karen Moy with these oh-so plodding storylines!

In a month or two, we will learn what cruel twist of fate befell Bobby.

Punky said...

But tuffenuf - aren't we waiting to hear about what cruel fate befell her FATHER? Or perhaps she has been dealt two blows of cruel fate. Who can keep track?

Vicki said...

Happy at home, happy with Bobby-- happy, happy, happy! Maybe the "cruel blow" was that one of them got a hangnail or something.

Anonymous said...

Maybe Bobby was Gina's father's secret illegitimate son. When Bobby found out Gina was his sister, he bludgeoned their father to death. Now that would be a cruel blow.

Anonymous @ 2:10 p.m. -- I think I saw that on an episode of Law and Order: SVU. Jane Seymour played the mother. (Jane Seymour, rrrrowwrrr! :-p)

Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman?

Tony said...

"Black," Bobby's last name, cannot be just coincidentally the same as Jill's. Can it? Surely Karen May could have thought up another name. Or does it hint of a dark side to Bobby that Gina never suspected?

Anonymous said...

Tony: I think she just forgot.

James in North Dakota said...

Anonymous @ 3:16: Yup, Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman.

Anonymous @ 4:45: I'm surprised she didn't make Gina look like LiZa. Just put on a different name tag, and there ya go!

I am a native NYer and I want to assure you that everyone here does indeed have blue-black hair. And deflated balls.

Peggy Olson said...

Anonymous and Tony, I love the thought that Mpy forgot she's already used the name Black. After alll, with such complex plotlines, who could keep track of all the characters!

Hey, Worthisphere devotees, has it ever been explained what happened to Dr. Jeff's wife, the mother of Drew and Adrian? It's never mentioned - not even during Adrian's recent wedding (when she was stuck with Mary and bitter Jill for advice).

James in North Dakota said...

Peggy brings up a valid point. Is there some sort of Mary Worth character directory (or some form of Worth-ipedia) online?

Amanda Kate said...

They do look alike. I wonder if fate's cruel blow is that Bobby is her illegitimate brother?

Wanders said...

James, you just refer to the label list on the right side of this blog for a complete character list since 2008.

Hey,guys! This is the second Black to appear in the Worthiverse. Any chance that we might someday see a Latino or Latina or a Native American?

Chester here. I see that frequently in the mens locker area at NYSC!
