Mary Worth 1,117

But what if they did?! What if the government did play with the Baroni family's brains, and the whole Bobby Black thing is just an implanted false memory? That might explain Gina's completely over-the-top obsession with a boy she hasn't seen since he was 14.

Well, actually they did. See, when you start a new life, you are supposed to have new experiences, make new friends, that sort of thing. They don't expect you to stay immobilized in your 14 year old persona. Though I must say, Gina, you did an admirable job on that front, staying true to your 14 year old self by maintaining your ponytail and your bizarre obsession with Bobby the Skate Rat.

I agree with Karen--they did: Gina, if your dear ol' mom can speak to you in your dreams, why can't Bobby?

Wait! is that Bobby in the background?

Ow. I mean, OOOWWWW.
Why is Gina smiling like that?

One can only assume that the whole dad/murder witness, mom/deathbed challenge, decade of waitressing, that whole time/passing thing, hasn't nudged her Special Vision of Bobby on a Skateboard from her mind.

She must have seen that image singed into a piece of toast she was delivering to a "customer" just before Mary dodged a bullet.

@Karen - and, gauging from Gina's profile in the first panel, she also maintained the body of a pre-teen. Gina is reluctant to grow up on so many levels.

OMG! I just got this in my inbox and it's just the Thing For Gina: http://www.radiospirits.com/detailsv2.asp?mbprodid=55798&PCODE=M09NC003&source=rsmail091411

I wonder if poor Karen Moy reads this blog? If so, her self-esteem must have sunk to the same level as her characters. I think we have to be nicer.

I think whatever funds the Federal Witness Protection Program spent on the Baroni family were completely wasted. Can the feds petition for a refund?

If Bobby -- that is, if he does exist! -- was genuinely interested in finding Gina, all he had to do was Google "Gina" and "ponytail."

Punky said...

Talk about meta-weirdness. James, I DID just go Google "Gina" and "ponytail," and one of the first references was to... this blog! Maybe Bobby can find her here!

@ phoebes in santa fe - You have a good point. Our community should try to live by the example set by Mary Worth herself who Karen Moy quoted when she said,
"In every situation, I always try to do the kindest thing possible."

To set our good-natured sarcasm aside for a bit, I'll note that Moy used authentic names for this story's reference to social networking sites. (Remember back when Dawn Weston was obsessed with the web? Didn't she constantly check nameless "online accounts"?)

I know many from my parent's generation who frown upon the idea of searching for someone online. Perhaps Moy is educating an otherwise uninformed segment of readers on the positive aspects of online social networking sites, and protecting users like us from their criticisms.

Punky, I did that just now. "Gina" and "Ponytail," although the blog came up sixth. The first one was a Flickr account of some girl named Gina showing off her ponytail.

Well, now we know what Gina does during her breaks!

Dave in Parma said...

@James: breaks from.......sitting at tables drinking coffee with diner patrons?

Maybe Gina's "job" at the diner is akin to a greeter at WalMart.

Why on earth would Gina think that Bobby would ever have tried looking for her. 1) She was moving away to a place unknown to Bobby. 2) She was going to be given a new name unknown to Bobby. 3) He was probably given instructions to NOT try to find/contact her as it would put both of their lives in danger. Does she not remember that the mob would like her to be dead?

meg said...

Hasn't the idea always been that the Mob is only interested in killing other members of the Mob? What is it about Gina's dad that we haven't been told? Is his nickname "Big Pony" Baroni?

Punky said...

James, our Gina could learn some valuable tips if she would just check out #3 on that Google list, and view "Gina's Gems - What Your Ponytail Placement Says About You." It would, at the very least, give *us* a little variation.

I'll post a comment when I'm done screaming at Gina's horrifying face.

Is it just me, or is this strip getting like 'Bizarro' where on most days there's an eyeball, piece of pie, bird, and/or stick of dynamite hidden in the panel. Only here, it's Bobby, first in the background on the 14th, and now walking by outside on the 15th.

"I've heard with looking out the window it's usually EASY to find people!"

Today (Sept 15) we see just how intense her search has become. She does not even notice the man who has apparently hung himself right next to her table.

I'm glad she's in a place where she can get more COFFEE.

Punky said...

Today is a strip commonly known as "Placeholder." Absolutely nothing got furthered. Basically we're just hearing Gina's thoughts, and I think we all know how fascinating those are: Hmmm, the letter Q. I always like it when I need to type that letter. Wonder what this wiggly key does. Does "fn" stand for function or fun? Hey, my coffee cup's empty. Gee, that was another great tip Mary left me yesterday. I wonder if Mr. Bluepants next to me left a suicide note."

So now apparently Moy is attempting to reproduce those scenes in "Airplane!" where Ted tells his life story to people who then kill themselves.

We've already had the hanging man. Will the next person attempt harakiri or self-immolation?

I'm choosing a Worthiverse option: weighing oneself down with salmon squares and leaping into the deep end of Charterstone Swimming Pool.

I'm thinking we're going to see Gina & Bobby reunited for Thanksgiving dinner at Mary's condo.
