Mary Worth 1,125

You know what else is forgettable? The offside rule. And if we are going to be attending the New York Blazes' match against the Santa Royale Soccer Team in just two days, we all need to study up. The offside law is the most confusing rule in soccer and drives many a young child away from the sport. It did me. I spent much of my adult life trying to figure out why offside was called against me when I was ten, and after years of study, I finally got it.

While Gina continues to speculate over and over about her relationship with dear sweet Bobby, let's take a moment and prepare ourselves:

Today's Full Strip

Gina dips her big toe in reality. You'd think Mary would look relived. Not even a hint of a smile, much less eye contact.

I love the way Moy breaks up her syllables in Gina's balloon. "Forget-table" is perfect, because Gina forgets to service her tables as she drones endlessly about Bobby.

And "re-member." Is that a reference to what those mob thugs may have done to poor Dad?

Even Mary has grown weary of Gina's school girl act. Compare Mary's bored look today with her gleeful expression when she called that 9/11 Mother.

Still, if yesterday's Tiny Butt on Bar Stool is any indication, it will be great to see how our artist draws the action at the Big Game!

Mrvy, I love the imagery! "Dips her big toe in reality." That's just what a girl-child like Gina would do. I can just see her in a shapeless swimsuit with a nose plug and water wings on her arms!

It's also your opportunity to get Mary another cup of coffee. Look how Gina taunts her with her cup! If only there were a waitress available!

After two months it finally occurs to Gina that "Gina and Chiachi, er Bobby" might just have been a childhood romance?!

And Wanders, personally I never quite got the "drag your foot on a throw in"--as if throwing two hands wasn't restrictive enough to an 80 pound kid.

Not to worry; Moy's soccer game won't need any of those pesky rules. It'll look more like a romantic dream sequence than anything resembling a real soccer match.

Excellent di-section of Moy's gram-mar use @ Peggy.

I anticipate at least 1 triangular felt "Blazes" pennant in the soccer crowd. I look forward to hearing the name of the Santa Royale team.

Hahaha! Wanders, I agree about offsides in soccer. It took me a while to figure it out as well. In fact, I stopped playing as a kid and got involved with easier to understand sports - basketball, softball, etc. I came back to soccer at age 40, FINALLY understanding the rules...but alas, I was rewarded with the only injury that I ever suffered in 35 years of playing many different sports - an ACL tear. It was almost as though soccer had been angry at me and lashed out in retaliation for me ditching it as a child.

I feel so free now, knowing that someone else had trouble with the offsides rule! Ahhh... sweet freedom!

oops... did I say "offsides"...
I meant, of course, "offside".

I tried to put my hands in the same positions as Gina's - I can manage the coffee cup, but her other hand is doing - what? It's not comfortable - why would that be a normal expression of concern? It's more like maybe she's practicing to dance like an Egyptian kind of thing (no offense to Egyptians...).

Or should I have said, 'comfor-table'?

We already know, in our hearts and minds, how this epic will turn out, don't we? True love at the soccer game and a new "Posh and Becks" duo is born.

(Though I, like everyone else around here - secretly or not secretly - wishes Bobby is gay.)

Forget-table! A-cute observation, Peggy!

As a recovering soccer mom who never grasped the finer points of the offside rule, I thank Wanders for the video.

Ann Landers is no longer with us, but I sure wish she would march into Diner, get in Gina's face, and shout, "Get over it, Gina! Wake up and smell the coffee already! And stop associating with this boring meddler while you're at it."

Now that Gina has shown all of us how easy it is to find old flames and reconnect with them, everybody is rushing to Facebook.

In fact, the site was so overwhelmed with the volume of lovesick searchers that they had to change their software and format to slow everybody down.

Thanks, Moy. @@

I had to LOL at that. As a youth, back when I was happy and that was the only way I knew how to be, I was a young soccer lad.

Kathyo is probably right. Since when do technical rules apply to "Mary Worth." Players will probably be off-siding all over the place!

And Dave in Parma, with diners named Diner and hospitals named Hospital, I wouldn't be surprised if there were non-descript banners that say "Soccer" or "Go team."

My son briefly played soccer at age 5. Parents were not allowed to cheer for any child by name. We had to yell "Go, Blue!" and "Great Kick, Green!"

Who knew we were all secretly cheering in the Worthiverse for TEAM?

Soccer never took in our house, so I never had to learn any actual rules. Now I'm trying to figure out what it means to be in various seats when you row on RIVER.

My life changed in two ways today!

First, Wanders explains the offside rule to me and I can now be the cool guy in my sports bar when I force the cretins to watch soccer!

Second, I took the bus today and noticed several young ladies wearing ponytails, and none of them looked as mentally deficient as Gina!

New things are poss-ible!!

Cook in kitchen: "Gina, pick up, pick up!" RINGS BELL "Gina...oh never mind..."

@Dave in Parma: The Santa Royale team is called TEAM.

James in North Dakota said...

Maybe the offside rule could apply to Mary Worth....well, weren't Gina and Mary sitting the other way around in yesterday's strip? (with Gina making her coffee cup float)?

Too bad Gina never realized her "deformed" hand's full potential for carrying trays over her head at her job. After the endless free lunches with Mary, she will never work in foodservice again.

tuffenuf said...

@Mary, 1115AM

Now I can tell you all about rowing and the seats. I did that and understood it very well. (in Northern VA)

Gina could more easily find peace in the Middle East than find it in her overwrought, pre-adolescent brain.

Well, I for one hope that Gina and Bobby's reunion is all that she hopes it will be. Because, if it's not...then we will have to sit in the damn diner with her and Mary for another 3 months.

I think that instead of Team, we will be seeing the Santa Royale Support Stockings in action.

They will, however, play all of their home games at Stadium.

WV: "munchin". Wasn't that Beckenbauer's old team?
