It's beer thirty somewhere.

"What we put out always comes back to us!" Poor choice of words, if you ask me.

@Mary - Nice catch on the fingers!

Is this entire storyline going to be Mary advising Nola over the dinner table, without ever actually seeing Nola in action, getting what she wants? Because it certainly seems that way.

OH WAIT, i just read the whole strip, and i think Nola is about to say "Let me tell you a story..." WIN!

If you check out the perspective from panel 1 to panel 2 today, the camera seems to be panning around the room. Wonder if we'll get the full 360. But if this were a movie, I'd be at the ticket counter asking for my money back.

Nola: I take what I want!

Mary: (shock)

Nola: My friend's marriage fell apart but it wasn't my fault!

Mary: !!

Nola: I don't let anything stop me!

Mary: (face touch)

And so on.

wv: besogoot. As in: Karen Moy, would you besogoot as to tell us where all of this Oobleck Chat is leading?

I am not just clear as to whether Nola gets what she wants...

Could someone help clarify?

Nola? Could you make that statement for the 20th time just to clear it all up for us?

tuffenuf said...

Oh, and Mary, While the phrase: "What we put out... comes back to us." is a great play on words for Nola, I think it may not have been the best choice of phrasology for her to comprehend it in the manner that you may have meant it.

It's The Battle of the Cliches! Has our Mary finally met her platitudinous match?

WF: unlodge, as in "This storyline is stuck. Could someone please unlodge it?"

KitKat said...

Oh no, Nola has given Mary an opening with "I know what that's like." For the next two weeks, Nola will dredge up something from her past. Mary will drop a platitude or two that will show Nola the error of her ways and change her life. It'll be Drunken Jill jilted at the altar redux. Oy vey!

You can tell Mary is on her heels with this bird. I mean, come on, mixing Christian dogma with Buddhist/Hindu thought? She's throwing the whole spiritual-kitchen sink at her and nothing is working! Maybe Mary has a personal anecdote hidden deep within her - could it be that the young Ms. Worth was a shameless hussy who saw the evil of her ways? Just saying...

I think Mary is getting it back thus far.

@Mary--good catch on the fingers--or is that the world's largest thumb? "I sued to care for others back when I worked in the china shop, but they fired me for dropping things--I was all thumbs."

@Punky--Moy/Giella are just setting the strip up so when you make your flip book of MW panels, it shows like an Omnimax theater presentation.

"Cheat upon others and they will cheat upon you."

"What you put out, other will put out for you."

Sounds like Mary's encouraging Nola to me.

I think the Law of Mary is going up on my wall in vinyl lettering.

I just HAD to leave a comment today when I saw my WV: hooker. SERIOUSLY!!!

So here goes: I like to think Mary actually meant to use that choice of words. She could have said "we reap what we sow," but maybe this is her way of making a little dig at Nola.

I think we are about to learn why Nola got this way. Sympathy to follow.

If Nola always gets what she wants, when is she going to divulge what the heck she wants from Mary (besides a free meal)? An eon ago she claimed she wanted to have dinner with Mary to ask her advice, if I remember correctly. I sense a sad story about childhood coming on, but I still don't know what she wants, and there's something almost psychopathic in her continuing assertions that she always gets what she wants. . I am embarrassed to admit how much I don't like this comic strip character. .. . .

cessou--a cesspool of, that's right---YOU!!

Would you girls quit pointing fingers, now that we've finished eating and paining our ooblek, let's get back to the (pool?) party

This is turning into the longest Goofus & Gallant cartoon ever. Is Nola really that one dimensional? It's as if she has no conscious at all. Is she a sociopath? I wonder if there are bodies buried under Mary's rose bushes?

Sandi Ego said...

You get back what you put out, do unto others... she missed "you've made your bed, now lie in it" for the double entendre platitude trifecta.
A new little morsel of info about Nola - she has experienced self-denial. And, with God as her witness, she'll never not get what she wants again. Or something like that.
wv - cyche, as in Nola just wants to cyche Mary out with her shocking revelations.

Poor little Nola probably never got the REAL Barbies at Christmas, only the cheap imitation ones thats' heads fall right off.
All her friends' Barbies got to live in the Dream House with Ken, but hers had to settle for the single life in a homemade shoebox house with cut-out paper curtains. No pink Corvette in the driveway for her, nosiree!

Petunia said...

Seems to me that Nola's big problem is that she HAS been "doing unto others".

Nola's perseverating. That can be a sign of brain damage. Time to call in Drs. Jeff, Drew, and Adrian, and see how long it takes Nola to hit on all three of them.

Or Johnny and Roy. Johnny was a chick magnet and Roy was married. Right up Nola's alley. So to speak.

I think Mary is bored. She looks completely hypnotized. Even levitating those puffy pink cookies from the floating tray is no challenge to her anymore.

Pat P. said...

In panel 1, Nola looks just like Mary Tyler Moore as Laura Petrie. I expected her to say "Oh, Rob!" Meanwhile, Mary looks a little like Robert Blake in drag.

WV: sparehor (... and spoil the child? Another of Mary's rules.)

So what did Mary "put out" to get her wallet and ID stolen? Does she apply her "Karma can be a bitch" comment to herself? Didn't think so.

Anonymous said...

Chin up, little campers. Nola's last sentence is clearly the setup to everybody's favorite phrase in all the Worthiverse. Yes, she's about to utter the immortal words: "Let me tell you a story...."

Anonymous said...

What I learned today...what Nola "puts out" comes back to her.

Thank you, Mary.

Anonymous@2:43-- Didn't Mary already tell us that story about how she was poor and raggedy and hungry until her friend's family took her in? Or does she just make something up to suit the occasion every time? What I'd love is for Chris Brown to show up and ask her why people hate him. Then Mary can reminisce about how everybody hated her when she was a successful R&B singer just because she made her dog ride on the roof of her Escalade.

What a sucker Mary will be when Nola tells her hard luck story and Mary believes her. If this has anytning to do with child abuse I'm swearing off Mary Worth forever.

katyb said...

@Maude Findlay, 11:10 a.m.
Of course Nola is that one-dimensional. This is the Worthiverse, after all.
If a two-dimensional character ever shows up, the space-time fabric will rip faster than you can say "tunta," which my WV

i could care less about the story today i just wonder where flower vase is hiding that rascal

Petunia's "doing unto others" comment made me spit out my oobleck!!

wv: spedu. How do you know when it's time to leave the Charterstone pool party? When Ian Cameron arrives on the pool deck wearing his Spedu.

Mary, I highly recommend "The Sociopath Next Door: The Ruthless vs. the Rest of Us" by Martha Stout Ph.D. It will help you understand Nola. Unfortunately, you can do nothing to help her.

HAHA! I just noticed that in today's strip, Toby has "Cookbook for Dummies". Or are they in Mary's apartment? Maybe Nola ran out and got that for her after the green goo fiasco. :D
